Yup, I got it from the library. Eh, that's probably true seeing as I'm also attempting to spork For You, Only For You. And trust me, you don't want to know what that one's about.

I's shall! I think I'm on chapter 5.

I just thought I'd say that I found another Sue. She is from the second book in the Door Within trilogy. The first book was epic. Then they switched to another main character named Antoinette. This is the 21st century, people! She is beautiful, knows kendo, goes into this realm called Alleble that is only a story (this is starting to sound like a GIME!), she manages to defeat some of the finest knights of Alleble, she falls in love with the prince, she is one of the prophesized three heros that will end the war between Alleble and Paragory.....

*looks back on her post*

Valar, she sounds just like a GIME!

Gee, some authors really think their readers swallow everything, eh? Well, seeing as how Twilight got popular...

I read Piratica once. I thought it was boring and that was when I actually liked pirate stuff.

I despise Wizard's First Rule.

I seriously hate it when authors feel the need to have people save some kingdom or another when there's a prophecy. I find them terribly boring; I mean, there's only so many action sequences one can read before getting bored with them, especially if one somehow knows how to fight expertly with little to no training. (cough Percy Jackson cough)

QUOTE (MackenzieW @ Apr 16 2009, 06:11 PM)
Well, I'm convinced that Martha Jones from Doctor Who is a big Sue, even bigger than Rose at some points. At first, it seemed she would be a pretty interesting companion--a nice contrast to Rose. She had more book smarts while Rose was street smarts, was from a different economic background, and was a promise of a kick-ass companion. And she seemed to be that...for only the first episode. Then she became annoying when it was clear from episode 1 that she was already in love with the Doctor and acted like a jealous girlfriend. Yes, Rose grew upset when she found out about Sarah Jane, but she got over it. Martha stewed every time it was suggested she wasn't the only woman in the Doctor's life. She also had to remind us she was a doctor every time someone was hurt or died, immediately doing CPR. She would be a fighter but then become helpless when she needed the Doctor to save her. When the Doctor locked away his Time Lord self, he took it back because Martha said she loved him. And then everyone who meets her loves her immediately, even when she's talking down to them like they are idiots (I'm looking at you, Torchwood team).

Oh, thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Mac! Do you have any idea how hard it is to find somebody who dislikes the oh so wonderful Martha Jones? I've been arguing with someone about it on youtube for about five months now. She's convinced that Martha isn't a Sue because everybody is always putting her down and ridiculing her. I'm getting really annoyed with this person to tell the truth... Martha is a Sue. Get over it. Of course the Doctor put Rose up on a pedestal. Forgetting the end of season 2 already now, are we? *sighs*

You're welcome. You are have my permission to copy that if you need any support. And when was everyone putting Martha down? I know the Doctor puts her down in Episode 2 with his comment about how Rose would've solved the problem by now. I thought that was a dick move, but it kept in line with character's glorification of Rose. But after that, it never happens again.

Has anybody read Halo by Alexandra Adornetto? I haven't, but judging by its reviews on Goodreads, it seems to be like Twilight only a million times worse.

Yeah, it's possible. "Vampire Kisses", which I mentioned in "Badfic in Print" is maybe not a million, but definitely ten times worse than "Twilight". (See the thread in question for a killer quote.)

And Sue main character is more goffick than Enoby Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way.

So no, I haven't heard of "Halo", but I'm not surprised.

ETA: And Katniss from "Hunger Games" is shaping up to be one too. Is there a recent YA novel with female protagonist that isn't a Sue?

I don't think so. I think the kick ass Sue is now a staple of YA novels.

Except mine, but it's still in rough draft.

Katniss isn't that much of a Sue, I don't think. She's got real issues, and is more a survivalist type. (Hi people! I'm just popping in during night shift at work, and the enter key on my keyboard isn't working!)

Hey Tel! *hugs*

I don't think Katniss is a Sue, we've got to be careful not to overuse the term. Katniss has real problems connecting with people, issues with her mother and frequently fails to see the 'big picture'. Yeah she's got two boys after her but at least one of them had a realistic relationship build up, even if it was off screen. The less said about Peeta's 'courting' of her the better. dry.gif

I dunno. I started reading and dropped the book because I couldn't stand the Sueishness.

Don't Sues do that too? They don't connect to people because they are self-absorbed - check. Aside sacrificing herself for her sister, and that was very unrealistic scene, too - she seems more pushed or obliged than genuinely afraid - she never ever puts another before herself. Everything is about her. It could be a flaw, but the way it is executed, it sounds more like self-righteous whining. Realistic? Somewhat. Appealing? Hell no. A lot of Sues have issues with parents, particularly mothers. And since when did Sues see big picture? If you meant she didn't realise what it was all about, no one did - and she wasn't supposed to, for the sake of the plot. To say nothing of her possessing all the convenient skills she needs to win.

Collins lost me at the part where she is oh-so-brooding-and-tough and underdog...and then she gets speshul dress and speshul entrance and everybody instantly loves her and she loves it too despite being a cynical brat up to until mere seconds ago.

Did you read the books? Or only saw the movie? Maybe it's a bit different if you don't hear her voice nagging about how jaded she is. And then her actions tell completely opposite.

I guess she is where milegaes vary. Also, just being a Sue doesn't mean that character is not likeable. I like some characters that could be considered Sueish. Katniss just doesn't work out for me. I do intend to run her through litmus test once I gather the strength to finish the book properly.

Hey HATI! Hey, Refie! *hugs you guys*

I've been at journo school and now I'm working full time as a reporter. It's draining and I can't waitto get out of New Zealand.

As for surfing the web during work, there's nothing to do at 9pm on Sunday. tongue.gif
