Description: Learn how to edit Leon's skin

Hello all and thank you for checking out my tutorial. I've never done one of these before but I learned a whole lot from this community and I figured that I might as well post this while it is fresh in my mind and it can be of use. And of course, I'll probably forget a lot of what I learned so, here's to history.

First of all I believe it is legal to have a copy of the RE2 demo. (once someone authenticate's this theory we may have a link) This is what I used for my source information

TOOLS:

TIMviewer - You use this to get into the skin files and edit them.

TIMpatch - You will use this to authenticate your TIM file to make sure it will work when you launch your game.

Microsoft Paint - You can use whatever program you're comfortable with but I use this because it is basic and easiest to use.

Ultimate Paint Free - You will use this to save your image into a 256 color bmp so it is compatable with the game.

Microsoft Office Word - You'd be amazed what this program can do with pictures. I use this to pallet change.

RESOURCES:

This is the original Leon skin. I'm posting it for both visual reference and because if you extract the PDL version it will come in 3 layers so you'll have to save 3 times and if you're new that's hassle. So use this.

This doesn't cover all of the body parts in depth but it gives you the general idea. I will tell you more about this soon.

ON WITH IT:

Ok, so you have your demo and your utilites. Decided what you want to do with the skin.

Lets start with editing the BMP file for the skin. As you see above I went and color coded the skin and put them on the model so you can see how they work. A few special notes:
user posted image
A. This is the front of the upper body, not too difficult.
B. This little spot here is the cap for the elbow and shoulder. So C and D are the cylendar and B is the cap, it is repeated for both ends, so be careful with your color choice.
C. This is the inside of the upper arm.
D. This is the outside of the upper arm. This is where the RPD crest sits.
E. This is the Upper left leg.
F. Don't know yet.
G. This is the upper rear torso. If you're trying to match graphics with the front then match up the bottoms of A and G, you'll notice A is taller, but the bottoms line up the skin.
H. Not sure yet.
I. Leon's left and right waist.
J. I forgot to serperate this but the left half of J is Leon's butt essentially and the right half is his crotch (belt buckle).
K. This is the piece that combines A and G. The left half of K wraps to the back and the right wraps around the front.
L. This is Leon's right leg.
M. This is Leon's shin. This skin is repeated twice on both legs, so if you want to add knee pads or anything you will have to do so on the right side of M because it inverts and wraps around the model.
N. This is Leon's forearm. The classic skivvies under the RPD uniform.
O. I didnt know and I forgot about it, that's why it turned into O.
X. This is leon's elbow pads.

The rest is self explanitory. I haven't messed with that nose looking thing because face graphics don't interest me. Sorry kids. Hopefully this helps!

Open Ultimate Paint or your image editing software (not ms paint, it can't handle this) and save the image as a 256 bit .BMP.

Ok, your skin is great, now you want to play your super version of Leon. Lets GO!

Open TIMviewer.

Select File>Scan Raw File
Find the Leon PDL file (I'm using the demo as an example, your files may vary). RE2 Demo>PLO>PLD
And OPEN
Leon's base skin is PL00.

(It isn't totally necessary to back up PL00 because you can just copy over PL00CH, its the same file. Nix that, I just got my RE2 PC running and apparently the files are not the same. So back it up.)

Double click on the one file that pops up and then select
File>Export Multiple Files
Then type in 1 and OK

Now you have your skin to work with. But you're going to want to use the base Leon skin I put up here or you're going to have to save all 3 layers and put them together yourself.

Now when you extracted the file it saved it as 1.tim

So get your skin the way you want, use my comparison as a check sheet and you'll be fine as long as you stay in the lines.

What you're going to want to do next is save the .bmp of the skin you made as 365 colors, if you don't the file size will be wrong and the game will brick on you.

Once that is done open TIMviewer again and load the .bmp
File>Open BMP
Select your file
File>Save Tim File
Selec the 1.tim file and save over it

Now you're going to want to fix the file 100% by opening TIMpatch. So open TIMpatch
Click the humongous PATCH .TIM file... button
Select your file and patch.
Now close TIMpatch and thank The Mortician for his help.

Open up TIMviewer again and open your 1.tim file. Now you're going to want to put the tim back together again. Good thing we have more than all the king's horse and all the king's men. (I suck at being funny, but lame works just as well.)

File>Instert Tim File(s) and select the timextracts.txt OK

now you're ready to go.

Launch your copy of RE2 and revel in your accomplishments.

SPECIAL THANKS:

The Mortician for teaching me how to do this. Also the creator of TIMpatch

Gotta give credit where credit is due. HAH. Seriously, pretty damned helpful to a new guy.

As for the demo thing, I was pretty sure it was legal, I mean, after all it is a demo.

I'll probably just link so a 4shared file or something, or just point at a 4shared search.

I'm winding down so it'll probably be tomorrow before I finish this thing. My girlfriend has a habit of unplugging my laptop so I felt it was necessary to get what I do have online before it's lost to the abyss of WFT! WHY IS MY COMPUTER OFF? oh sorry, i dunno. HORSES#$%# STOP DOING THAT!

Thanks poisonshift!
ad unplugged laptop: The greatest horror of all: Resident Evil vs. real life a.k.a. RE vs. RL

If I remember correctly we had a topic not too long ago about someone uploading large parts of the demo version of Resident Evil 2 with his MOD since the latter was done for that game and not the retail.
Usually I'd say linking to the official demo is fine, since Capcom never charged money for that it was free from the beginning and thus can be downloaded without much of a problem. Re-uploading it may be something different (I honestly lost track of all the different copyright provisions in the last few years), but seeing that the bigger portals all used to have or still have the demo version for downloading, a simple link will be tolerated.

PS: Ah, here it is: PC Demo MOD by RMandel

thanks, your welcome ;)

Good to see people getting rid of the first obstacles in modding the good old RE games :) Also its nice and commendable to see that you directly try to help others around here by writing a short tutorial.

Also like the way you edited the character and wrote up a legend of Leon`s skin structure. That is a good way to provide help in a lot of RE related modding. I often did this myself long before I had the ability to load the models directly into 3D tools like Blender where I could directly apply the UV texture of the character and see how it fits.

poisonshift - October 11, 2011 04:55 AM (GMT)
I think this sort of tutorial is one of the greatest things to get people into the modding scene. Start small and get some positive results and it'll keep people at it.

I hope to have a tutorial for every skin, how its mapped and how it works. Since we are working with elements that will never be changed I think we should just dish out a little bit of effort, get them all posted and move on to the next project.

I don't know if I'll finish it today. I'm at work til 1am and I'm not feeling very good. But I plan on doing it soon. I'll move on to more tuts soon. Still need to address the wounded Leon and the bandaged version, also Leon's alternate skins.

J0SHUAKANE - October 11, 2011 03:06 PM (GMT)
yes thank you for the legend and simple tutorial! i have been modding re2 on and off for a couple months and still have nothing to really show for it. nothing to show off at least, but just within the short time i have been here alot has been found out and simplified. thanks to contributions like this i am now confident i can create my own classic RE game, may take a year or 3 but whatever...

thanks again!!!

poisonshift - October 11, 2011 03:20 PM (GMT)
start small. trying to make a full blown game solo is a killer. just get some practice and you'll be amazed at how fast you can work and what you're capable of. plus if you're experimenting then you've got something to give back to the community and they can comment on it. it helps to feel a little less alone on your projects. glad you're enjoying yourself.

poisonshift - October 14, 2011 07:31 AM (GMT)
ok, it is done. If I'm missing anything or you've got any questions or concerns that you'd like address feel free to find out yourself. lolz. I'm kidding, I'll help you out.

but yeah... that was fun. now to keep going with the RE2 skinning.

we're going to need a sepearate Tutorial sub forum next to the tools forum.

This is great! i'd love to make somes skins but i donīt know how to do shadows on the shirts and that stuff...

poisonshift - October 14, 2011 11:15 AM (GMT)
It takes some practice and I'm not even close to being good at it.

What I did was load the leon skin into microsoft office word and seclected the image. Then I did a color filter and adjusted the brightness and contrast. Once I was pleased with the color I loaded it into paint and started moving things by hand.

Maybe I should put that in there...

Aw dang. I'm so sorry. I forgot to add the step where you need to save the image as a 256 bit .bmp

Just open the image in ultimate paint or any other advanced photo editor that you may have (not paint) and save as, select 256 bit bmp. Then follow the steps to insert it into a tim file.

I'll run it and post a screen

EDIT

Ok, so I took the liberty of fixing your image, here is the proper skin format:

So strange, I saved my texture in ultimate paint, but I get this lags.

Anyway, thank you very much :)

UPD: Damn, I tryed again and I again get this stupid bug >.<

poisonshift - October 19, 2011 03:07 PM (GMT)
Very strange...

I want you to post me a step by step of what you're doing.

Go ahead and start from the top and every time you complete a step make a note of it.

Don't leave anything out. You may be missing something.

Using the demo or the full version?

Open your tim file with tim viewer and see if the file comes up in the right colors. It should if you've inserted the tim files correctly.

DXZ - October 19, 2011 04:03 PM (GMT)
Version - sourcenext
"Final" tim file - normal (no bugs, but ingame...)

Steps:

1. Extracting pl00.pld with Biofat
2. Unite 3 bmp pics in 1.
3. Recolor (in paint.net)
4. Copy from paint.net to ultimate paint.
5. Saving in 256 colors
6. Open timviewer.
7. Make tim file from bmp.
8. Copy "final" tim file to pl00 folder (wich extracted with biofat)
9. "Repack" pl00.pld with biofat

poisonshift - October 19, 2011 05:31 PM (GMT)
are you patching with TIMpatch?

try that.

you're using a whole different strategy than I have for my tutorial. I'm not familiar with biofat.

DXZ - October 19, 2011 05:37 PM (GMT)
Get this:
There is no need to patch this .TIM file

o_O

poisonshift - October 19, 2011 06:20 PM (GMT)
there's obviously something wrong. try using timviewer instead of biofat.

I honestly can't help you with this problem. Its not the way I wrote the tut and I don't have the time today to learn biofat. I had to go talk to my chef today and he asked me to work later so I've gotta catch some zzz's. Easiest way to get tired, don't think too hard.

I uploaded your skin in the pld format.

I can tell that you use a translator to post here.

heh looks like one of my first skins I`ve made back then. Was easy to do and the results satisfied me.

Good to see that you guys are getting the hang of it ;)

We should all throw down together and make a Halloween them pack. What say you morty?

Nice new avatar btw.

The Mortician - October 20, 2011 10:34 PM (GMT)
I will definitely make something helloween related for RE2 but have not much spare time at the moment to promise working on a pack. Also have a lot to do with the mod iīm working on :)

poisonshift - October 21, 2011 01:47 AM (GMT)
If there's anything you need help on let me know and I'll contribute what I can. I'm still working on the whole skinning thing but I think I'm getting better. But we will have to PM about that because I don't want this topic getting anymore off track.

But yeah, the Halloween pack is mostly just the characters dressing up for Halloween, not so much things like Nightmare Before Christmas or anything.

DXZ - October 21, 2011 05:35 AM (GMT)
Thank you very much! :)

P.S.: Halloween pack includes only models and skins? I can help with music\sounds x)

poisonshift - October 21, 2011 06:18 AM (GMT)
Well I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything. But if you want to talk about the Halloween skin pack I would like it if we did so in the other topic.

That has nothing to do with if you work on hunk or leon. The solution to this is, to not use the color black (rgb 0,0,0) in the skin`s image. The color black is used to indicate transparency by the game.

So you will have to replace the color from 0,0,0 to say 1,1,1 which is still black but not the black value that the game handles as transparent ;)

many image editors have a color replace function, use something like this to replace real black (rgb 0,0,0) in your image to (rgb 1,1,1)

If the skin still has transparency issues after that, it means that they`re using another color.
usually by default the first color of the palette can also be used as transparent color by the game. So even if it is grey, red or yellow etc.. To fix this, be sure that none of the pixels in your image use the first color of the palette. So be sure to check the first color of the palette the skin is using and check if the parts of the skin that are transparent ingame use the first color of the palette.

You can also test this out before running the game, by opening your new .TIM file with TimViewer and click on "View>Transparency" You will see if parts of your skin will be transparent then.

no problem, had cost me some nerves before I got an understanding for what caused the transparency issues. I follow this simple rules and have no issues anymore.
