There really isn't a best 3D modeling program.

Each one is different interface wise, render wise etc, a lot of people say 3DS Max is a good modeling program but then again people say Maya is etc etc, what it really depends on is what you want out of it.

Maya and Max obviously cost a ton of money something in the region of £3,000+ for a license unless you buy a students one.

There is free alternatives that I have personally had a go using mainly Blender, it has a lot of rendering technologies like maya and max can do and plus with it being free it makes it a worthy download and test.

Wings 3D is again a free alternative however I haven't actually used it to model anything that I do.

My personal opinion Maya is good its interface is easy to pick up compared to Max, its has all the functionality that Max has, however it does have its bad points being that it requires more ram to run that what Max uses, so when it comes to rendering it can be a bit of a pain compared to Max, but like I said it still brings out the same results.

And of course tutorial wise you will find more tuts for max than maya. At the end of the day though just try each one and see for yourself, and also remember that no matter how hard you try your first model will be simple and basic (was the same for me) so don't expect to run in all guns blazing and hopefully come out with a newly done background in a matter of minutes, a robot or anything for that matter it takes time and a lot of patience.

hope all of this have being useful.

Any program can do that its about adjusting the lighting and rendering in a 320 x 240 resolution =S there isn't some specialized 3D editor, and as far as I remember c2keo used 3DS max for all his render work, sure he said that on the THIA podcast anyway.

Edit:

Also pretty much all the old biohazard games were created in Microsoft Softimage (back when It was owned by microsoft anyway) from all the research I have done I conclude they would make very high poly models of each room, render each one in a 320 x 240 resolution and then make it fit the room data within the game what renderer they used is unknown to me, what I do know is that Resident Evil zero and possibly REmake were all created assets/characters/levels in Maya and all that evidence is in the umbrella archives book.

If you're able to afford that pile of shit wink.gif
If you can't buy it, don't hesitate to use blender a lot of people that tried using both even stick to blender since it's much easier to start with and any updates won't cost 600$ or more. They still use 3dsmax, but only if they need any special layers or something like that. So if you're not rich blender's a good alternative. Z-Brush can be worth having a look at, too.

Except z-brush is more for making normal maps and sculpting things I wouldn't use that to model a level in 3D tongue.gif

I have heard blender is easy to use however I can't get used to the interface even the newest build that's why I prefer Maya.
