Title: MEN 'O WAR (1929)

Classic Movie Man - November 16, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
Men 'O War (1929) in which they play sailors contains Laurel and Hardy's first classic routine of the sound era. Stan and Ollie have picked up a couple of girls and are short of funds so Ollie insists Stan refuse a drink but he doesn't listen. Eventually they agree to share one but Stan drinks it all : Ollie says "You know what you've done. Why did you do it ?" Stan says breaking into tears : "I couldn't help it my half was on the bottom." This is so much more funny to see than to describe combined with James Finlayson's wonderful double takes as the guy behind the counter.

The second half of the film is more conventional though still funny consisting of reducing a boating lake into total chaos. With just their third sound film the Boys have found their place in this new world. (3 out of 5)
