My home county of Yorkshire have produced many famous people - people in public life, sport (especially Cricket) and entertainment - but unfortunatly, as people in the UK will be aware, we've also produced some pretty nasty villains down the years - and Charlie Peace was no exception.
In 1870's Victorian England, Peace was a murderer, a burglar, an ogre to his kids, a misogynistic wife/mistress-beater and a general all-round rotter.
I haven't seen this picture for at least 20 years so my recollection of it is a little bit hazy, but the title role was played by a bloke called Michael Martin Harvey. I've done some digging on him, and to confirm my suspicions about him , he was indeed.......Welsh!
Don't get me wrong, he put in a workmanlike performance with his bogus Yorkshire accent (Who's getting 'tha neck stretched today? Thee or me?), but there were times during the course of the picture when he kept lapsing back into the Welsh vernacular, which let the whole thing down.
I would have sent him to spend 6 months on a pig farm in Rotherham to perfect a real Yorkshire accent.
