One of the Sky Movie channels in the UK (which I don't subscribe to) had a day devoted to Hitchcock yesterday so I decided to have my own evening of two of his films.

First the much under-valued PARADINE CASE (1947) with Gregory Peck in top form, Ann Todd (a lovely performance) and the beautiful Alida Valli. Charles Laughton, Charles Coburn, Ethel Barrymore, Leo G Carroll and Louis Jordan were also amongst the cast in this well crafted and compelling court room drama. Great score by Waxman.

Then another of my favourites FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940) with Joel Mcrea, Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall, George Sanders and Edmund Gwenn.

The windmills and umbrellas! Classic Hitchcock!

I just watched Hips hips hooray!
It was actually the first Wheeler and Woolsey movie I've seen. I really enjoyed it.

We are having a NOIR season in the UK this weekend. Last night I watched MURDER MY SWEET (1945) with Dick Powell. Years since I saw this and I had forgotten the plot so I quite enjoyed it. Then THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948) with Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth a film I have never been able to get into.

Tonight BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH (1947 although it goes under another title in The US ) with Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer and THE STRANGER ON THE THIRD FLOOR with Peter Lorre.

Not sure if there are more to follow.

Well, nothing on this thread for two months so here goes.

SHALL WE DANCE (1937) with Fred and Ginger and regulars Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore. I haven't watched this for over 20 years but have it on tape somewhere.

Great songs by Gershwin but I believe he wasn't entirely satisfied with them. He thought he could do better but won an Oscar nevertheless.

TONIGHT OR NEVER (Goldwyn 1931). Gloria Swanson and Melvyn Douglas play well opposite each other. Good turn as usual from Alison Skipworth and the first appearance in a talkie by Boris Karloff which I didn't notice and only found out when I read some reviews on IMDB. He did seem familiar though. Gloria looked absolutely gorgeous throughout.
