Title: The Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion
Description: yet another bunch of screenshots

Dinadan of Logris - April 5, 2006 09:20 PM (GMT)
Oblivion is a very good RPG game - if you like to play console style RPGs on a PC.. I don't really want to show all its features, there are lots of screenshots out there for you if you're interested. I'll just say that even though it's a somewhat buggy game (especially the German version which I have), it's still a lot of fun to play! :)

Compared to The Elder Scrolls III (Morrowind), it's a less "smart" game in some aspects, being obviously developed for consoles.. simplified, but that makes it easier to play too, and it's not as much at the cost of your fun as you might think in the beginning if you were a Morrowind fan..

So.. here some screenies, low res, compressed for a quick load.. Might look better on your own screen. (Some got anti-aliasing off too, the game needs that to make screenshots by itself.)

Guess what..

Yup. A Gate to Oblivion ;)

And that's the gate back to Tamriel. B)

A cool shot of the Imperial City at sunset.. or dawn, I forgot..
Yup, you can ride horses, but you can't fight on horseback.. Quite a feature they missed to include. :(

Some battle screens:

Ouch! Those Goblin Archers sure know where to aim!! :o (Image on the right is the same one with ++brightness.)

user posted image
Not all of the enemies you meet do :P

Beware, they use basic TW strats! Getting doubled is normal, in fact, you can be happy if there are less than 5 at a time coming at you. You get allies as well though, I have fought a battle with 6 city guards & legionaries on my side vs dozens of Daedra creatures.. Makes it harder in some ways.. You must actually take care who you are slashing :P

A few more coming, I just reached the smiley limit! And I'm watching TV too, hehe

Screenie of water surface.. Rain done nicely B) Too bad your character doesn't get reflected :o , only world objects. :( (Perhaps it's just my system, dunno.)

Enough screenies for now I guess.

Looks very nice... of course I'll still spam your xfire when you're playing it and I'm bored. :D

You mean, like this? You're welcome to! Hehe..
BTW.. I just noticed I left out a part of the Lord's Prayer, tsk tsk. Then again, it's hard to concentrate on things like that while a skeleton is shooting arrows at you.

[17:08] Dinadan: :)
[17:08] NihilisticCow: np

[17:09] Dinadan: "aah too late :P"
[17:09] NihilisticCow: rofl
[17:10] NihilisticCow: Maud gives you more source material in a way, since he's very anti-american military, but plays a game sponsored by them ;-)
[17:10] Dinadan: haha
[17:10] Dinadan: true
[17:10] NihilisticCow: so lots of comments like enjoying playing pretend American soldiers works quite well ;-)

[17:13] Dinadan: :P
[17:13] NihilisticCow: but, no
[17:13] NihilisticCow: you just brutally and savagely attacked and murdered him
[17:13] Dinadan: ya he greeted me with a mace :D
[17:13] NihilisticCow: hope you get shot now
[17:13] Dinadan: shots can be blocked :D
[17:13] Dinadan: they dont have guns
[17:13] Dinadan: arrows only

[17:14] Dinadan: haha
[17:15] Dinadan: the lucky shot is the help text from RTW isnt it

[17:17] Dinadan: she's easy to block tho
[17:17] Dinadan: takes lotsa time to swing a hammer
[17:17] NihilisticCow: no fun then
[17:17] Dinadan: yes fun
[17:18] NihilisticCow: just let yourself get hit
[17:18] NihilisticCow: only fair
[17:18] Dinadan: fun watching her hitting my shiled only
[17:18] Dinadan: well
[17:18] Dinadan: you get a bit hurt if you block too
[17:18] Dinadan: as you should
[17:18] Dinadan: guess it hurts to get hammered even if you use a shield
[17:18] NihilisticCow: why should I get hurt if you block?
[17:18] Dinadan: thats why :)
[17:19] Dinadan: minor HP loss
[17:19] Dinadan: aha

[17:20] NihilisticCow: run over it with an ele
[17:20] Dinadan: nah
[17:20] NihilisticCow: traps won't work then
[17:20] Dinadan: i looked up the ceiling
[17:20] Dinadan: there are maces
[17:20] NihilisticCow: see you needed eles

[17:26] Dinadan: "must be the wind" she says
[17:26] Dinadan: well she saw me
[17:27] Dinadan: sneak ability too low

[17:27] NihilisticCow: same old problem eh?
[17:27] Dinadan: O_O
[17:27] Dinadan: :)
[17:27] Dinadan: reminds me of the barb cav charging zerks

[17:38] Dinadan: lol
[17:38] Dinadan: nope
[17:38] NihilisticCow: and another hammer to repair the hammer to repair the hammer
[17:38] Dinadan: but

[17:38] NihilisticCow: what about a hammer to repair another hammer to repair the hammer to repair the hammer
[17:38] Dinadan: :D

Jöjjön el a Te országod,
Legyen meg a te akaratod,

Mindennapi kenyerünket add meg nekünk ma,
És bocsássd meg a mi vétkeinket,
miként mi is megbocsátunk az ellenünk vétkezőknek.
És ne vígy minket a kísértésbe,
de szabadíts meg a gonosztól.

lol, that was it. ;)

it replaced all my nice Armenian and Japanese (and another language I didn't have a clue what it was) with question marks though... :(

Dinadan of Logris - April 6, 2006 12:53 AM (GMT)
Ah, too bad.. Don't worry, I saw the correct characters when we were chatting, it was just saved in a text format that doesn't support them ;)

BTW, anyone here about to get Oblivion? I'm curious. (Single player only ofc)

Ah yeah, and talk about crappy balance.. I found out that if you're a magician with good enough illusion skill, you'll never ever get killed.. provided you don't mind to exploit the use of invisibility spells. But ofc you had similar ways to deal with Morrowind too if you wanted. Everyone can play their style.

Flintoff of Lancashire - April 6, 2006 06:42 AM (GMT)

I've started playing it but not really got into it....

TBH I havn't advanced much in the main quest either.. explored + restarted with a new character :D It's just as time-consuming as any good RPG, if you have the time to be consumed

Aelwyn of Breconshire - April 19, 2006 03:42 AM (GMT)
I'm addicted to it. Just stopped playing a minute ago actually. Due to my crappy system I basically have to run it at the lowest settings, because I don't feel like running it in a window that only takes up half the screen. :(

It's definitely fun though. I'm a wood elf/ thief specialist. marksman skill is probably my best attack. easiest money maker for me so far is alchemy...rose about 40 levels in the time it took me to go up like 5-7 in strength. i still haven't joined the dark brotherhood, just mage, thief, fighters guilds, and the blades.

Those who have better systems should think about playing this, it's a wonderful looking game.

Dinadan of Logris - April 19, 2006 05:46 AM (GMT)
Can a marksman deal with dungeons easily? Like caves in Oblivion, with high-level monsters?

Have you ever bought a single piece of weaponry/armour? :D It seems to me shops are mainly there so that you can sell the uber equipment you strip off dead foes... And get alchemy stuff instead  The equipment available in shops tends to be weaker than what you already have  Silly.

The Star of Azura (indestructible soul gem) or w/e it's called in English is still the best artifact isn't it? Nice of them to give away the location for the main quest, I didn't feel silly enough to sacrifice it though

I don't feel like killing innocent guys either.. Havn't started Dark Brotherhood (you have to murder someone!!!!! :o ) and did all I could against becoming a vampire, including reloads. <_<

Alchemy, enchanting and own spells still pwn like in Morrowind, alchemy still gives you levels easily. Merchant skill doesn't anymore, but the armourer skill is likely to (was a surprise to me) if you fight with weapons mainly, not magic --- and are determined to reload for too many broken hammers. :P Low magic skills are fairly easy to train to decent levels..

BUT.. you don't really need to gain levels here, to me it looks as though they actually managed to level out creatures to be defeatable for you at any point of the game. Which also means you won't be able to get the best armour at level 5, coz it won't be on the map. <_<

Yup, looks great. I just need to turn off grass every now and then to find the weapons they drop in the scrubs. Actually, I sometimes can't even find the bodies after a battle vs more opponents if grass detail is on

Aelwyn of Breconshire - April 19, 2006 09:58 PM (GMT)
What class are you using Dinadan? Being mainly a marksman makes it a bit tougher in dungeons, but not impossible. Its much harder in the Oblivion gates though. So I spent some time to get at least proficient with h2h weapons, upping my strength. Archery made no sense to me in morrowind, I'd be dead on target, but still miss. I know basically why it was, because I wasn't as leveled up, and the target's agility may have negated any advantage I may have. I dunno. So thats why I went with an archer-based character.

Using stealth and playing smart helps a lot. You can't always just rush people. I'm constantly casting spells, to level up quicker. I cast Detect Life a ton, along with shield and light spells. Helps level you up. I'd cast the bind spells so I could get my conjuration skills up, but don't have any yet. <_<

I think I'm at level 7 or something, and haven't gone far at all in the main quest. I just dropped whats his name off at the Blades homeplace, up in the mountain, and am supposed to go back to the Imperial City to see someone, don't remember whom. At that point, I just basically went off and did other stuff. I want to try some other characters, but want to stick with my current character. I spent like an hour fiddling with his appearance. ;)

Dinadan of Logris - April 19, 2006 10:37 PM (GMT)
I am using a self-defined fighter class, main skills are swordsmanship, blocking, light armour (my fighting style is hit & run :D ) 2x magic skills (destruction & healing type), alchemy and acrobatics, latter is hard & boring to advance, but I want to see what it's like when I can dodge attacks. Speed + strength are probably the preferred attributes I picked, forgot that, and I chose the stars that give you some extra strength..

This is my 2nd character, the original one had the constellation that stops you from regaining mana automatically but gives you magic absorption instead. Was a self made mage class. Stopped playing with it because I had to do too much alchemy to be able to cast spells, and ingredients seemed to be hard to get in the required amount.

I have spent way more than an hour with forming his visage LOL. It was quite interesting.. much much fun! :D But I restarted past your current level and main story advance.. and I don't think I'll play that character, rather make another mage.

Level 7, can you zoom in with your bow yet? That's another thing want to check when I'm fed up with this guy I currently play with. If ever. I get more interesting monsters and fun quests now, so I'll probably keep him :)

Stealth.. lol. That's not made too well in this game <_< If you want, you can advance it without actually playing.. (like athletics I suppose) I went AFK for 15 minutes to boost my stealth with the 1st character

Aelwyn of Breconshire - April 20, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
lol...afk. i was wondering about that. it works well for me though. when i go stealth, i do it up. i take off everything except the shield. literally. nothing but a loincloth. i figure, if i get caught, put it back on right away. no harm done. afterall, it pays to take off your boots, so why not go primal? :P

yeah, i can zoom in with my bow. it is semi-useful for the first shot, after that, not so much. but i got so used to using the bow without zooming, i almost feel like its not really necessary. i usually do check the corpses afterwards to see where my initial shot went, i'll have to take a screenshot of a good one next time. i've put an arrow through peoples' eye several times, from what i would guess is about 200 feet or so? not sure. of course i've also seen what i thought was a good shot, go through a wrist, or almost the end of a rat tail...so it goes both ways.

not to knock on the zoom though, it is nice...cause i have seen a slight difference between getting a stealth shot on someone in the face, vs in the leg or something. the biggest part is getting used to the gravity. not such an issue close up, but it can be from further away.

I've just been playing around with different vid drivers for about an hour, and went back to my originals...after overclocking my processor. waste of my playing time. :(

Dinadan of Logris - April 20, 2006 01:20 AM (GMT)
I used to take off armour with my 1st character.. I had a hotkey set to my breast piece, usually had it off and put it on just when getting into melee :) The guy runs much faster this way.

How to boost stealth while not playing, example:

- go into a room next to another one with people in it
- close door
- stand in corner
- go to stealth mode
- press Q to keep walking into the corner <_<
- go AFK
- come back to press OK 10 minutes later, having passed a proficiency treshold
- go AFK

So silly. Stopped at 50, felt bad about it  Should work with athletics too if you run I guess, I preferred playing though :) You don't need the levels after all. (Xept for some daedra quest which won't start until you are high level.)

Do you think it actually matters where you hit the opponents? Apart from that it seems to damages the piece of armour they wear there?

You shoot in 1st person view right? I only go 1p when I fight with allied characters.. too easy to hit them, then you have to bother with making them civil again, not to mention healing  Tried shooting in 3rd person? Every third or so fireball of mine is way off target

Aelwyn of Breconshire - April 20, 2006 07:29 PM (GMT)
I'm almost always in 1st person, sometimes go to 3rd, but no, haven't really shot in 3rd yet. I'm not exactly sure if theres a difference in the amount of damage based on where the shot hit. Could mainly be the fact that I'm hitting an un-armoured part of the body when I shoot them in the head, so long as they're not wearing a helmet. I've often thought the same thing though, that it doesn't matter where they get hit.

My character is custom as well. Major skills that I remember are Marksman, speechcraft, alchemy, mercantile, strength, erm...speed i think? and luck. Thats all I remember. some may be useless, but i've got some minor skills trained past many major ones. like you said, leveling doesn't seem to matter. I actually think I read somewhere that each opponent goes up in skill as you do, so it doesn't really matter anyways.

How do you take screenshots btw?

And yeah, same for me...I haven't really used any exploits to level up at all. I prefer playing.

Faaris of Jerusalem - June 13, 2006 04:45 PM (GMT)
my brother is addicted to this game. he cannot stop playing it. :(

im afraid of it now. :D

Dinadan of Logris - June 13, 2006 05:51 PM (GMT)
Just persuade him to finish the main quest, that might make him stop.

Kay of Sauvage - June 13, 2006 10:22 PM (GMT)
So have they fixed any or most of the bugs yet? I might get this game. My brother was looking to for a new game and he mostly plays RPGs (FF, Kingdom Hearts, etc), I could probably get him to buy it :P.

Dinadan of Logris - June 14, 2006 02:33 AM (GMT)
He's not likely to find better RPGs out there ATM.. dunno about bugs, havn't played it for a while. If you get it for the PC, bugs won't be a big deal... As said, I played the German version (not all quests, most remarkably none linked to being a vampire), and the "bugs" I saw were mostly linked to the translation, I havn't met any bugs that are seriously affecting the gameplay. Except some fish bugs, which might affect a secondary quest.

Faaris of Jerusalem - June 14, 2006 09:44 PM (GMT)
last i checked, there was a beta patch which fixed some crash probs..

Richard of D'Hara - June 15, 2006 01:11 AM (GMT)
MMORPGs are my favorite this is an RPG though(according to sources).

My questoin: is there any kind of online feature?

Faaris of Jerusalem - June 15, 2006 05:34 PM (GMT)
it's definitely massive, but there is not a multiplayer feature. single player only although you barely notice it, or so im told.

Dinadan of Logris - June 15, 2006 05:48 PM (GMT)
I have no comparison, I only played RPGs so far. Opponents get stronger in Oblivion as you advance, and they are quite capable of killing you. (Especially if you play fair and on higher difficulty.)

Kay of Sauvage - June 16, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
Haha, my brother got the game and was getting killed by rats with the difficulty turned all the way up.

But his system is barely the minimum requirements and it's crashing a lot on him :(

The system info on his comp says 2001 Mhz processer (min is 2000), 512 ram (512 min), 128 vid card (he has the lowest one supported, GeForce 5200).

I should look online for any crash-preventing tips they might have... He did install the patch. Maybe windowed mode would help? Any ideas?

Dinadan of Logris - June 16, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
I think windowed mode would make it worse. Don't alt-tab either, that likes to crash on weak systems.

There are many tips out there for minimum systems, your bro really should look in TES4 forums.

They will certainly tell you to eliminate all unnecessary processes. Good idea for that is your virus protection software, you don't run online anyway, and e.g. Norton eats a lot of system resources.
Apparently, enabling triple buffering works well with some vid cards (increases load times but smooths gameplay). And I know there's a way to unload textures of the dungeons, which you can do whenever you leave them to get more vid mem for the actual scenery.
Disable music if it's jaggy, saves a few CPU clicks for the graphics.

i just started playing this last week and decided i would look to see if this thread was here and it is. Anyway yeah i just read through this and great tips. Im playing a wood elf/thief he pretty much kicks ass untill anything gets close to you its really fun to stealth your way around and shoot things in the back of the head. im running it on medium it works fine xfire is a little crazy with it but i mean its a good time.

Totalis - September 30, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
A bit late but.... :D

I got it a couple months ago, and when I got started on the Dark Brotherhood quest chain, I could NOT stop no matter what. Its even got a nice story to it, and sneaking around and knifing people was unforgettable.

I even got vampirism from the guy but then the game got a bit unexciting because I was all-powerful and I killed anything that moved in one hit....even the final bosses of the game I shanked them in one hit rofl

Allowing such EASY access to the difficulty of the game is a sin (I couldn't muster the self restraint to play the game on a tough difficulty instead of going around playing god  ), you should choose right before you begin a game and then cant change it again to make things consistently so that everything turns out as the game meant it to be.

awesome game, in my limited experiences with RPG's I've never seen one thats actually funner to go around experimenting than it is to complete the main quest chain (which BTW was :yuk: )

Dinadan of Logris - September 30, 2007 10:05 AM (GMT)
Agreed, the main quest is not too good. There are now several expansions out, if you aren't tired of the game yet, but finishing "all" quests in vanilla would take a long time anyway. I think the adjustable difficulty is a good thing, you can set it higher if it's too easy. The fault is in you if you don't :P

Totalis - September 30, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
I'll try it again on a tougher difficulty, I guess the first time playin it through I just wanted to get to the end and know the story for Dark Brohood, but I know the first time I die its back to the left for that meter! lol :P

Kay of Sauvage - September 30, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
You can download mods, like the OOO mod (Something Oblivion Overhaul). That seems to be the most popular mod and makes the game more difficult. It adds all kinds of boss enemies, makes wilderness animals more likely to appear in packs... It fixes how some characters will scale their levels depending on your level. For example, you won't be able to beat the arena quests early on. You need to get powerful first. It makes it so that the best equipment isn't just lying around. And it adjusts the equipment on some characters so that you can get good equipment by beating the tough enemies. It also puts some predetermined loot in some places instead of it being random loot as it would normally be. It does a lot more small adjustments to make things seem more logical, like changing the values of some items. For example, clothes are actually worth something.

Totalis - September 30, 2007 04:47 PM (GMT)
Wow...that just addressed every problem I had in mind for the game lol, Im downloading it!

Thanks ;)

It only works properly when you start a new game. So forget about using it with your current saved games.

They changed what the "signs" (like lover, steed, thief, warrior), will do, so that the choices are more balanced. I think they made fatigue much more important. Combat will tire you out much faster. 2 of the signs actually increase your fatigue regeneration.

Also, the potions no longer have an instant effect for giving you health, magic, fatigue. They work over time, so you'll need to use them earlier rather than at the last second. You might need some of anti-fatigue potions now too, with the fatigue being a problem.

One thing I don't really like about oblivion is that I'd like to play a little bit of everything, but I'd do best if I specialized. I really like using the bow, sneaking up on enemies and picking them off. But marksmanship is kinda underpowered compared to other forms of combat. And when they come charging at me, I want to switch to hand to hand weapons. And then I also like using some of the magic. Not really destruction magic, but the odd skills under illusion or alteration, or maybe conjuration. If I do all of that, I'll just be weak in everything. I'd do much better just as a pure powerful mage, or purely a warrior with super-strong attacks.

Also, when you specialize, you'll use the skill that use the same attributes, so you'll get a bigger bonus for those attributes when you level up.

Wow...anyone tried the Thieves Guild for this? Id say its the BEST, with Dark Brohood trailing behind.
