Title: Canadian malcontentiousnessss

In a confidential diplomatic cable sent back to the State Department, the American Embassy warned of increasing mistrust of the United States by its northern neighbor, with which it shares some $500 billion in annual trade, the world’s longest unsecured border and a joint military mission in Afghanistan.
“The degree of comfort with which Canadian broadcast entities, including those financed by Canadian tax dollars, twist current events to feed longstanding negative images of the U.S. — and the extent to which the Canadian public seems willing to indulge in the feast — is noteworthy as an indication of the kind of insidious negative popular stereotyping we are increasingly up against in Canada,” the cable said.
A trove of diplomatic cables, obtained by WikiLeaks and made available to a number of publications, disclose a perception by American diplomats that Canadians “always carry a chip on their shoulder” in part because of a feeling that their country “is condemned to always play ‘Robin’ to the U.S. ‘Batman.’ ” |
I'll never forget my first time in Korea when we hired a Canadian teacher at our school (I trained him). First thing he did was put a 10 foot Canadian flag in his classroom. And how do you talk about what Canadians are like? By attempting strained contrasts with Americans, relying on unflattering stereotypes.
Barrett of Maidstone - December 1, 2010 08:28 PM (GMT)
We've been doing that for years.... :D
Caradoc of Mercia - December 1, 2010 08:55 PM (GMT)
To be honest, why does that bother you? It's that way with all countries; ask about how the Portugese feel about Spanish, Irish/Welsh/Scottish about the English, English about the French/Americans etc etc. It's only funny that the Americans get so shocked and worked up about something other people just laugh about. :P
tehReal~ChaZZZy - December 1, 2010 10:20 PM (GMT)
In general I think the media tends to portray America in a very negative light.
I am a bit surprised that according to this cable, Canadians view us the way they do.
I don't know any Canadians personally so I can't comment on this the way you can Merc.
YellowMelon - December 1, 2010 10:23 PM (GMT)
Are you ######ing kidding me?
Don't even get me started on stereotypes; the only thing most Americans know about Canada are the stereotypes. The only time Canada gets a mention in the American media is when there is a joke to be made. Plus, I can honestly say that things have not been as negative since Obama was elected.

From my perspective Canada is portrayed in neither a positive or negative light here by the media.
YellowMelon - December 1, 2010 11:02 PM (GMT)
Well that`s essentially my point. People have nothing to go off except for stereotypes.
Don`t worry, Merc, we still hate the French more

TBH I see Canadians as essentially 'Americans'. Not in the little brother kind of way, but as a people sharing many of the same values we do here in America. Am I wrong?
As a side note the fact that you guys realize that the French do indeed suck is a huge plus... :P

Commence Operation Canadian Bacon! B)
Mercurius of Cappadocia - December 2, 2010 05:16 AM (GMT)
Oh, it makes sense that an American who visits another country would perk ears up at the mention of one's country.... something that a Canadian would not be conscious of until you watch some US media.
What's a Canadian stereotype, Mel? That you guys tend to be nice, play terrible sports, like curling, while ending every sentence with eh, eh?
:D

I rather think the ones about Candians are positive stereotypes like Merc suggests, same with Englishmen. Americans, Scots and Irishmen: not so much
Dagonet of Rus - December 2, 2010 03:31 PM (GMT)
The chattering classes of most countries like the upper-middle classes of other countries, see Anglosaxon obsession with french 'high-culture' whilst at the same time nominally despising the french as a nation, english obsession with the vaunted academia of new england and various parts of californian living, whilst looking down on the rest of america(ns) as fat and dumb ingrates. The american love of harry potter-ish hugh grant-alikes, and accompanying view that english women are ugly and men all have oliver twist broken yellow teeth.
The exception to this rule in england atleast is the commonwealth, brits tend to love anything australian, kiwi, afrikaans or canuck, which I guess is the logical conclusion where none of the above has anything that approaches high culture ;)
Same is mostly true of views on sino-culture, high japanese culture garners a great deal of respect abroad, accompanied by a general disdain.
Doesn't work for the french though, they hate anything that's not either camp as a US marine or buys their nuclear technology.
Enough stereotyping for ya?
Barrett of Maidstone - December 2, 2010 04:15 PM (GMT)
Says alot for the american sense of humour!
I had a great time in the states though, everyone was so nice to me and nothing was too much effort. It wasnt until later that i realised they thought we were all australian!
Oh and as for stereotypes...

That we are socialist/communist, live in igloos, hunt caribou for sustenance; generally uncivilized nature due to our sprawling wilderness.
But tbh US and Canada are probably more alike than any other two countries on a cultural level. Except that you're like half Mexican now.

Well I suppose it is hard for a George Bush loving, gun-toting, bible-bashing, red-neck yank to tell the difference. Y'all don't have too much of that ole grey matter. :P

The show "The Border" that was the main concern of this American diplomat was cancelled earlier in the year by CBC. So our indulgence may be overstated? Also, nobody watches Little Mosque on the Prairie, which is a show about Muslims in a small farm town. Awful, just awful. The CBCs programming is . . . crap. One of their highest rated shows is about former NHL players strapping on figure skates in "BATTLE OF THE BLADES". The only time I turn on that channel is to watch the Leafs lose.
Another intercepted cable from a while back:
| QUOTE |
| The embassy in Ottawa told Washington that having Obama visit Canada so early in his presidency would “do much to diminish — temporarily, at least — Canada’s habitual inferiority complex vis-à-vis the U.S. and its chronic but accurate complaint that the U.S. pays far less attention to Canada than Canada does to us.” http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2010/12/01/16390106.html |
Damn our inferiority complex!
That dude needs to clean the poutine out from his vag.

I wouldn't take that too personally melon.
Obama been referred to by some close to him as always thinking 'he's the smartest one in the room' so the fact that he thinks you guys have an inferiority complex should really be no surprise. The guy struts around like he's the heavyweight champion of the world when in fact he's been handed his arse by nearly every global leader he's had to meet to move forward policy or something of National imprtance for America. The guy even sent Bill Clinton to get the World Cup--FAIL. And he personally lobbied for the Olympics for Chicago--another EPIC FAIL.
The guy even throws a baseball like a girl:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j87k1j4CpOwYeah.. obama is not athletic enough.... and too bad he's the smartest guy in every room. Wish we had another dumbass Republican in office.... maybe a Palin next time.
Dinadan of Logris - December 5, 2010 11:01 AM (GMT)
BTW, the cable wasn't coming from Obama, it was *to* Washington, reflecting the opinions of those in the embassy.

Correct, Din.
O and ... yay the Americans are hating one another again! Mission accomplished!
