well i have been shopping around because I honestly dont want to take the time to build one. I built my last one and it was easy, but i dont want to do that this time I think. I understand it can be cheaper but it can also be a pain in the ass.

i am thinking i may spend about 1200 bucks or so on a rig. there are just so many options out there and they all claim to be the best!

Alienware are never worth it. Build your own, it will only take 30 mins to assemble, an hour or so to install OS then a few lots of 20 mins inbetween long tests on IBT/P95 to overclock. It works out upto 25% cheaper and you'll get superior components.

Superior componenets for sure..Would never go back to alienware XD

Have an area 51ALX. one of my graphics cards died a day after the warranty..faulty manufacturing..apparently the coils were put in incorrectly. My secondary 1T hardrive became corrupted after a power outage shortly afterward..The liquid cooling is nice but the case is all flash and no function..if anything the case is what is helping to destroy my graphics cards as there is no room for them to breathe. If I had the money I would take the whole thing apart and rebuild it in a new case with updated components.

Not to mention customer service is crap..

Kronos is right. Ivy Bridge is only a month or two away. You can get that or go with an older but not bad Sandy Bridge which should be cheaper when IB is released. I'm waiting for IB then I'll build my next monster rig.

Slightly over at $1300 and I didn't put in a normal HDD as I'd presume you may have one laying around or will use your current one as I usually do when switching PC's. Thats pretty much what you'd be looking at for $1200 although just swap out the 2500k for an Ivybridge 3570k if they're reasonably priced and that may require a different mobo, not sure.

The only thing I'd change personally if it were me (I'll be building something similar soon as well perhaps) would be getting an antec 1200 instead of 900, getting a thermalright silver arrow cpu cooler instead of the NH-D14 which they don't sell at newegg and looking at perhaps a slightly more expensive gfx card. All depends on if $1200 is your definative budget or just what you're looking to spend that could easily increase towards the $1500 mark. 8GB dimms as well so you have another 2 slots to upgrade to 32gb if you wanted.

Release date is april 29th, hopefully it'll simply come in and replace SB at similar prices rather than being more expensive as it only looks to be giving a 5-10% clock for clock speed increase and the built in graphics are worthless for gamers. There's a possibility of it not overclocking as well though as the actual chip takes up less space on the die with the graphics taking up some so it could run hotter than SB. At the very least it'll lower prices of Sb chips a decent amount.

The Noctua NH-D14 (which i have tongue.gif ) might be a bit overkill unless you plan to overclock. 16 GB of RAM may be a bit overkill as well for pure gaming, 8 GB is really the max you're going to need (For now). I suggest posting in the forums on Tom's Hardware, there good at helping you pick components.

Also, i forgot to mention, if you're 100% sure you won't be overclocking, just get the Intel i5-2500, because the only thing the K version offers over the 2500 is an unlocked multiplier which you won't need unless you overclock

Not too bad, but if Jai does want to spend $1200 (not sure if a monitor's included?) then he can get a better than most of those components. I don't expect to see 23% VAT in the USA either... he probably gets everything cheaper than us. gc-smash.gif

Yep, recently increased to 27%... I wonder if that's a world record. joker.gif

VAT's typical for Europe, US states have single-digit sales taxes. The major gov't fees on PC components could be import tariffs though, dunno.

if you buy online in the US, there typically isn't any tax unless the place you buy from operates a retail store in your state. afaik ofc.

Hi Jay
I would buy the cheapest PC that runs the games you want to play , because it will be old before you can bring him home .
i bought mine two and a half years ago and it costs 400€ ( a bit more than 500 dollars ) .
it still runs all games that i want to play .
only the graphic card could be a bit better but that`s no big deal .
So think twice before spending a lot of money (1200) for a PC that will be old in the moment you bought it .
i dont know for what you are using it beside gaming and how much money you earn , so its difficult to say . At least you must decide if its worth spending 1200 for high shadows , realistic water etc.
This rat race will go on anyway . gc-furious3.gif
i only know that i bought in 2004 a toshiba p-20 desktop-replacement for more than 1800€ (special offer hahaha ) and sure it was not worth it .
in my opinion Abs offer is realy good !!!

Maybe a little overkill yes when a $30 cooler is enough to get to 4.5Ghz, however the prospect of not overclocking is quite frankly insane when with that noctua cooler ( or preferably the silver arrow which is cheaper and slightly better) You'll get 150%+ of the performance than at stock speeds.

I disagree with Tanne completely, I bought my PC 3 1/2 years ago now for £734.16 and it was excellent when I first got it and can still play bf3 on medium settings/Shogun 2 maxed/Skyrim nearly maxed whereas i bet your £400 system was barely cutting it when first bought for the latest games then.

There's definately a price point where you get the most value for money, too low and you're only getting half a PC that is pretty poor even when you first buy it and too high and you're paying a premium for the latest components that are only marginally better than those half the price that are an extra 6 months old. That price point I'd say in USD is $1000-1500 at present so you're on the right track Jai.

Exactly why you should never buy from a manufacturer like HP or Dell.

"i7-2600 processor [3.4GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]" - Substandard processor as it isn't the overclockable K version and also there's no point getting a 2600 over a 2500 unless you'll seriously be needing the hyperthreading.

"16GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]" - To get a good level of Ram you'd need to pay +$180 for 16 GB over the 8GB standard and this is 4gb dimms so will max out all the mobo slots so no possibility of easily upgrading in future. Also it's unbranded RAM from what i can tell so probably cheap ###### made in china. It's also slower than you'd get building your own PC where you'd use 1600Mhz+ instead of the 1333Mhz stuff they hve in this.

for comparison you're paying +$180 for 16gb here, probably another $180 in the initial price for the standard 8gb and for 16GB of ddr3 1333Mhz Ram of superior quality at newegg is $84.99 total for some very decent G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9Q-16GBXL.

Hard drives don't tell you the exact make or model in the descriptions which means you're probably getting unbranded chinese ###### again (no decent manufacturers of SSD's make 160gb models only OCZ who make ###### SSD's that are unreliable and intel who i wouldn't buy anything except a processor off of so thats the absolute best you will bet if you're lucky). Again with the price if you wanted an SSD you're paying +$180 over the price of the standard 2TB drive and one of if not the best 128gb SSD's the Crucial M4 is only $165.

They make you pay for crap you don't want or need like windows/norton antivirus/microsoft office etc as it's "included in the price".

The graphics card choices are poor and for the type of money they're asking for the complete system you'd expect the top level card on offer ( the 7950) which I added in for +$449, at newegg $449 is the standard price for this graphics card so they're definately adding money on to upgrade or you're stuck with the pile of wank card thats standard. Also last time I checked big companies liek this don't use ASUS or MSI cards that are reputable but have their own HP cards (or cheap ones made in china) made inhouse to save costs.

Their "Air cooling solution" looks dreadful as well.

Then there's a load of other crap they try and sell you like monitor/speakers etc before you get to the "Beats Audio ™ -- integrated studio quality sound" which shows you the motherboard which isn't a retail mobo but a $40 north korea jobby that HP have custom built in the cheapest possible country in the cheapest possible way to save more costs. You'll never be able to overclock anything with this peice of junk.

Then you get free $5 keyboard and mouse and they try and sell you more crap software and accessories.

So for the joy of owning a pile of donkey ###### surrounding a processor no one in their right mind would buy, a great graphics card but probably cheaply made so you can't be sure of quality control and the like and some substandard ram all for the bargain price of:

Total: $1,938.99

Buying this PC is the equivalent of voting republican when you're on food stamps, worse infact and you'd need to be clinically insane to buy that.

For example, I could build you a PC that is better in EVERY conceivable way using better components from reputable manufacturers for $1500. Infact I will build you a better PC and ship it to the US all for much cheaper than that if you like but please whatever you do, do not buy that monstrosity.

None are of the standard I would use personally but there's nothing wrong with them per se. But they're not really for when you're spending over $700 and not for gaming.

It would be a better choice to build one from the ground up. Message me on steam if you want to discuss things further as that would be much easier to go over things quickly with you.
