here you will find a whole lot of extra information concerning canon characters that
we didn't have room to put in the canon list. please browse this thread for
important information regarding your character. for a quick search, press ctrl-f
and type in your character's last name to find everything relating to him or her.
it would also be helpful to know the major leaders of this board, so make
sure you scan anything that catches your eye. this list is non-negotiable;
we will not be changing anything to member requests. sorry. it's just a little
too much trouble. but we hope that you find all extra info to your liking.

POLITICAL PARTIES

• AVANT GARDE

referred to as aggies, the avant garde is the most left-wing political party on the gamut. those who join this party are in favor of nearly complete anarchy, and seek to elect their own minister of magic simply so he will begin to dissemble the ministry of magic as it is known to england. the main goal of this party, and the prominent plank of their platform, is the elimination of the office of minister, replacing the executive power with a very strong representative legislative congress. relying on transcendental, thoreauesque ideals, the avant garde make it very clear that their business is the rule by the people, and a just government is that government which does not govern – or at least governs least. the avant garde are dead-set on a complete overhaul of the structure of the ministry of magic, believing it to be old and corrupt and lodged in its old ways. and so it’s out with the minister – which, of course, they can only accomplish by electing a minister. those running for office for this party say that they will work to use every bit of their power to expel their power – that’s what they tell the political punditry, at any rate. they’re often considered cockamamie liberals and are often the butt of degrading political jokes (“an aggie walked into a bar; he said ouch”) but that doesn’t stop them from holding passionate demonstrations and sometimes violent protests against policies they find oppressive or restricting.

• RADICAL

like the avant garde, the radical political party believes in starting a new wizarding tricameral congress that would be elected by the general populace and representative of the people. however, they also believe in a balance of power, and so the minister of magic would still have significant duties and responsibilities in the ministry of magic, his authority only slightly limited from what it was in the first place. the radical party is a softer, more practical version of the avant garde, and thus it is more plausible that it will eventually achieve its ideals. its members, however, aren’t always willing to risk their lives for its dogmas as members of avant-garde usually are. the party is extremely liberal. its goal of restructuring the ministry to include three elected houses represents the radical change it calls for, and while many leaders know that it would be desirable to banish the minister of magic as avant garde is trying to do, they realize it is more prudent and accessible to compromise. thus a more reasonable branch of the avant garde was formed, and it eventually became its own party, called the radical. members tend to be very young people with a thirst for change but a good head on their shoulders.

• NEW MODERATE

the new moderate political party is perfectly happy with the way the ministry of magic is set up. what they wish to change are the key policy decisions that are subject to change with the whim of each passing minister of magic. the new moderates are still very liberal, but certainly not as flamboyantly inclined as the avant garde or the radical are. in this party’s agenda are changes like tax reformation, extensive public welfare programs, and the establishment of a better and more modern public education system for children who are not yet of age to go to hogwarts. the new moderate is interested in modernizing the wizarding world one small step at a time. they are often accused by some of their more free-thinking counterparts as merely settling for what they can get rather than fighting for what they could have, and it is true that the new moderate has given up many ideals for the sake of practicality. they, however, maintain that a path down the middle is the best way to govern a country and stabilize the wizarding population in times of need.

• OLD MODERATE

the old moderates are basically those who don’t want the ministry of magic to change. while they are certainly in no way fundamentalists, and they don’t want to revert back to more oppressive times, the old moderates don’t feel that the ministry of magic needs any renovation at all, in structure or in the general outlook on policy. the way the ministry has been running has proven fruitful for them, and they hold that stability and predictability and perpetuity are the most important values to a government, no matter if these stable, predictable, perpetual decisions can sometimes prove to be harmful. these wholesome people are a bit on the conservative side, and believe that the ministry should act as the patriarchal head of a family, giving support and orders, rewarding if obeyed and punishing if defied. the functions of the ministry as they have been for the last century or so have pleased this party, but now they have found themselves fighting to remain in control.

• TRADITIONALIST

traditionalism is a rather softened version of purism. while they are significantly more conservative than the old moderate political party, traditionalists aren’t convinced that pure blood is the answer, either. no, they don’t put too much weight on blood status, but they do believe that old, aristocratic families should be given the power since they have the money, and if those ancient wealthy families happen to be pureblooded, then so be it. they believe that the government should regulate much more than it currently does – it should interfere more in educational standards and curriculum, it should make sure that criminals and tramps are not walking the streets, and it should take responsibility for the general safety of its people, leaving nobody to fend for themselves. hopsitals, the traditionalists believe, should all be ministry-owned and ministry-operated, along with many other entities that represent public services and interests. they believe that what is old is also tried and true, and should be continued for the sake of being continued. risk-taking is not in this party’s vocabulary.

• PURIST

the purists are equally vehement on their end of the political spectrum as the avant garde is on theirs. purists believe that the minister of magic should act almost like a monarch, with complete aristocratic power, and that he should also always be pure of blood. halfbloods and muggleborns are to be tolerated – otherwise they’d have no chance of ever securing victory – but never valued as the purebloods would be. recently, the purists have split into two rivaling factions in a bitter internal schism – those who believe that pureblooded women should be allowed places in office, and those who believe that their place is at home. the purists are unshakable in their beliefs, but they’re the only political party who still puts all their basis for desirability as a candidate on immaculate blood status rather than merit or motivation, and this may prove to be their eventual downfall.
