I find myself in a mood to play a more tactical/realism type of shooter. I know not of any recent ones though. I have enjoyed Swat 4 and Raven Shield in the past. As far as I know there has been pretty much nothing since. Have there been any recent releases like those games? I was thinking of playing Clear Sky again, but eh. I've kinda been waiting for the next version of Redux before I touch that game
I saw a promising mod for CS not long ago. Some guy made some changes to the AI. It sounded great but he seems to have abandoned it. True Sky Mod
What a douche.
I've yet to see any Far Cry 2 mods. Unless I just don't know where to look. I remember playing Fallout 3 with 'Onehitter's Combat Realism mod' or something like that. It was neat, but eh.
I need something new, something 'fresh'. I've been looking forward to the next ARMA game. ARMA sucked until the 1.14 patch. By that time I had pretty much played it out though.
So, are there any recent or future releases I should look into? I'm probably just going to have to play Swat 4 and Raven Shield again
I've heard terrible things about the latest Rainbow Six games. I've heard GRAW was good. I remember playing a demo and thinking it sucked though. I heard GRAW 2 had shitty AI.
You could attempt to play one of the Rainbow Six games. The older ones might be a tad too dusty for you, but Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 2 is pretty new and I found that quite enjoyable.
It's not quite the same as Ravenshield or SWAT 4, but it does allow some tactical choices on your approach to situations, and also a variety of weapons and toys. The gunfights themselves are also quite fun, using the kind of push button for cover system you see in many recent games, along with the ability to do blind fire and the like.
I agree about GRAW though. I found that game terribly dissapointing, and it's sequel was no better. But I find you can't quite trust the media and what they say about games, heck you can't even trust your friends (CoD4),
Quite frankly, if I want to be railroaded through atmospheric scenes in realistic depictions of modern day warfare I'd much rather watch a movie than play a game.
Games should really be about solving things *my* way.
Edit: Sorry man. I didn't read properly to notice you weren't interested in the latter Rainbow games. Doh.

No problem, if you liked Vegas 2 and said,"Quite frankly, if I want to be railroaded through atmospheric scenes in realistic depictions of modern day warfare I'd much rather watch a movie than play a game" then it can't be as bad as I thought it was. I think I will at least look into it now. I heard it was just a plain old action shooter with no tactics.
Installed Swat 4 again, only this time I got the expansion to try and make things fresh. Yeah, I never played the expansion >< . All I've done is a couple of quick action scenarios. Almost forgot just how great that game was. I tried rushing through and was promptly shot down as I entered a room
I think what really makes me like Swat 4, aside from tactical gameplay, is that your not just there to kill everybody. I love trying to be nonlethal and cuff people, or at least try to wound them without killing. Oh god and it's so much fun pepper spraying, bean bag shooting, and tazering the ones who give me lip.
Problem I ended up with in SWAT 4 was that I simply ended up equipping all my officers with Non-Lethal Shotguns and ran stampeding into every scenario, mostly alone, shooting hostages and suspects alike.
Flashbang, Shotgun blast, "Get down on the floor!", Shotgun blast, "Drop your weapon!", Shotgun blast, "Down on the floor, now!".
That tactic seemed to work throughout pretty much the entire game, which made things a slight bit repetitive for me.
Of course I could have chosen to not take certain weapons or set up some different house rules. However, when you're a score whore like me who insists on trying for the perfect score in every level, it feels a bit like shooting myself in the leg before going on a mission if I go in with suboptimal gear.
Either way, there's not many tactical shooters around. Rainbow Six: Las Vegas isn't truly one of them either, but I found it enjoyable regardless. It does after all have a lot more in common with other rainbow six titles than for example Soldier of Fortune or Call of Duty.

Yeah, it can get repetitive. Probably why I haven't played in so long. At least the AI spawns seem sorta random so it's not exactly the same every time. Anyway, the Swat 4 expansion adds this grenade launcher and it's kinda making things easy. I've just been firing gas nades everywhere, then proceed to holler, punch, shock, or pepperspray the coughing tards into submission. The open spaces that I couldn't quite just flashbang are now cake because of that grenade launcher :/
I'm kinda annoyed with how well armed the enemies in swat 4 are. I'd like to see more civilian looking criminals. Not long into the game it just seems like everybody is in the military with their body armor and automatic weapons. I want to see more, I dunno, stereotypical gangsters, thugs, and punks with more common and practical weaponry. Oh well.
Think I might install Raven Shield again too. I haven't played it in so long. It had one incredible lasting impression on me though. I remember that game having the best and smoothest movement ever. Gently opening doors and perfectly peering over and around corners are what I remember most from that game Clouded memory though, not sure if it was just exceptional at the time or outstanding to this day.

I'd say that you'd still find the control to be very realistic but that the way in which the AI moves/acts & reacts is not so fancy. RvS was a nice change of pace for me during the OFP years though and the included editor (UEd) was super easy to use as well - "Transport" was the last map I recall making. Mmmm Silenced M14 on semi-auto...MP ownage.
Can't say too many good things about SWAT 4 though - it wasn't perfect but it really was fun to beat-up on mouthy suspects. You'd probably enjoy the Stetchov* Syndicate a lot more too if you avoided using the easy gas tactic - my favorite addition in the expansion was the ability for the AI to flee if it wasn't cuffed within good time. I remember much chaos being created when one suspect in a room full of kneeling people got itchy and made a break for it - and I always armed my team with non-lethal weapons (love that 100% scoreboard ) so there was often lots of screaming by me but nothing was better than the occasional perfectly executed round.
A SWAT 5 done well would be excellent - and surely many shooter fans are getting well past sick of the no-brainer, human-tank shit that keeps being released.
EDIT/ The advertisement might change each time this page is opened but right now, the add below this post is a link to SWAT 4 as a free download. Here's a copy of the link in case the add changes: http://mygamesfile.com/swat4game/

Heh yeah I've had runners in Swat4. I recently had a guy I didn't cuff and I left a weapon lying around. I thought my guys were watching him and I turned away to cuff another guy, only to turn around and find that the other man decided to pick up a gun and blast me. Turned out my team didn't even go in the room with me for some reason>< And my team specifically said they had my back. I've made extra sure to not leave weapons lying around since then. I dunno if the AI got a little wonky in this expansion, but I've heard people say that your team AI in Swat 4 are flawless and always do as they're told. I don't remember having any trouble with them unless I happened to be in 'his' "spot". With this expansion though, I have had them ignore orders and screw up simple shit on several occasions. Maybe I'm expecting too much from them
For sure, I think I will stop using the gas tactic now as I have been breezing through some parts that I felt should've been difficult. I actually gave the grenade launcher to a teammate on one mission and he didn't use it. He just switched to his pistol for the whole thing. Maybe I have to specifically tell him to use it. Oh well.
Any thoughts on ARMA 2? I'm a little excited because they kinda sucked with ARMA. I mean, I expect ARMA 2 to be more 'polished'. ARMA ran like shit for me until the 1.14 patch. I'm also worried that ARMA 2 might be kinda 'consoley'.
