The BasicsQuidditch is played on a long oval pitch, a grassed field 500 feet (152 metres) long and 180 feet (55 metres) wide. At each end of the pitch is a 'scoring area', which contains three goal hoops mounted on posts, each fifty feet (15 metres) high. In the centre of the pitch is a small circle, two feet (60 cm) in diameter, from which the game is begun. Players are required to remain within the bounds set by the pitch in horizontal directions, though they may rise to any height above the ground they desire, and the enchanted balls have similar limitations to their movement.
There are over 700 fouls in Quidditch, although ninety percent of them are impossible due to the ban on using magic wands on other players. Quidditch is overseen by a referee, airborne like the players, who may award a free shot at goal (a 'penalty') to teams who are the victims of rule-breakages.
The Players3 Chasers: The Chasers throw the Quaffle to each other and try and get it through one of the hoops to score a goal. Ten points every time the Quaffle goes through one of the hoops.
2 Beaters: It's their job to protect their side from the Bludgers and try and knock them towards the other team.
1 Keeper: Their job is to fly around their teams hoops to make sure the other team doesn't score by throwing a Quaffle into them. They are like a goalie.
1 Seeker: It's the Seeker's job to catch the Golden Snitch. They've got to weave in and out of the Chasers, Beaters, Bludgers and Quaffle to get it before the other team's Seeker, because whichever Seeker catches the Snitch wins his team an extra hundred and fifty points(and the game ends).
The Balls1 Quaffle: This is a big red ball about the size of a soccer ball.
2 Bludgers: Two identical balls, jet black and slightly smaller than the red Quaffle. The Bludgers rocket around trying to knock players off their brooms.
1 Snitch: Very tiny, about the size of a walnut. It's bright gold in color, and has fluttering silver wings.
