Ok, so this is my idea... And idea that has been floating in and around my head for quite some whil now. Though, this idea has already been used - to some degree - in tabletop rpg sessions and even of forum-based roleplay, it has never really gotten the oportunity to be announced to more people than five.
So I never really got any feedback, or views on it. That is why I've decided to post it here... Even though, I have left that world, had not worked on it since I've seen Titan AE, I am curious what would you make of it. That, and my conscience won't leave me alone for being a careless parent of my creation... Verge - Chronicles Of The Fringeworlds The title has been chosen after quite a battle of ideas and words, but I've came to that this name fits the world quite much, in many ways. It all takes place here, in our Universe - but 440 years later... The Galaxy was once thought to be so enormous, that scientists never counted on the problem of not having enough space; the problem of neighbours. Since humanity had set foot on the Moon, their dreams of travelling to the stars seemed not all that distant - and in the 25th century their dreams were the everyday routine of reality. Humans have raised a mighty Empire; that ruled over more than 140 solar systems, and hundreds of worlds. Their technology is deadly efficient, and their inventing spirit is still fuelled by the same vigor of the will to survive - making use of that which other consider useless. With their armies of countless soldiers, warmachines; and their vast fleets they have conquered a large chunk of space, earned their right to live amongst the stars - and have enslaved other races(the ever revolting race of quoreans who resemble bipedal felines; the shaxties, who disappointed greatly in humans for they thought of humans that they were their long-awaited Gods returning, and who are often referred to as foxes; the monster race of dessloch - who they often refer to as : "Holy f***!"). With their slaves they work, and mine the matter that is the key to their success: cordan. A material, unlike any, that holds enough energy to power their gigantic cities, to enable their starships to break the rules of time and space... and grants them the ability to create weapons of mass destruction. But that is only half of their strenght; the telepathic race of Tallarians, have submitted to the human conquistadors. Their reasons had remained in the mists, no one could tell what was the truth behind their actions, as they see the future, most say that they foresaw their lost battle and extinction if they oppose humans. In any case, they had been thier all seeing eye for two hundred years now - and had taken a crucial part in maintaining their status amongst the other more stornger alien races. Humans have only one true ally, the (slave) trading species of the molusc-like Ragnors, and trade slaves with them for technology, and spies. The Empire of Man is however, in dire need of all the help it can get... For amongst the stars, hide races far older then they are. The noble race of Sendrians. A desert dwelling humanoid race; that looks like some sort of a prank nature made on humans. They are very muscular, stand around 2.3 meters in height, and weight in average around 160 kgs, and looks remarkably human like from a couple of dozen feet away. When taking a closer look, you'll find that they walk on the front of their legs; and have an elongated skull, like a short snout. They have fangs and claws instead of fingers and teeth. But they have hair, and brown skin, and eyes like humans. They have a sort of ethical code like knights, but cannot tolerate blackmail, or any enemy who breaks that code. They are several thousand years older than humans, and have a better understanding on the laws of the Universe, their technology is supperior to humans. The monster race of Tarbians. These creatures look far from sentient, but in fact they are quite wise. Tarbians weigh more than a tonne, and reach up to 4 meters in height. They have exoskeletons the protect them from many things: hars conditions, and - to a degree - gunfire; and an internal one at the same time; along with the muscle strenght that enables them to lift up an interceptor craft. Their head is horror manifest, their mouth consist of not only two - lower and upper jaw - but four pieces - an appendage on each side (sidejaws). It seems a miracle that these creatures have technology, and that it is on the same level - and on some territories of science even better - as the humans'. A Tarbian ship is easily recognised by it's sheer size and the massive armor. All tarbians walk the path of warriors, these creatures are the most powerful opponents on the battlefield... Though not the most feared... ((this is as much as it gets today, just let me know if anyone's interested in this, so that if I continue this, it won't be in vain.)) |

((continuing...))
There is a race in cold space, that is mercyless. It thrives on hate, and enjoys slaying beings of other races. The race of Velarians, or as everyone knows them, the Hunters. With advanced stealth technology, they walk amongst their prey, cruising to find a formidable opponent. Velarians are another monster race, they are around 2.2-2.4 meters in height, and weigh 140-200 kgs. They have a strong carapace, which is laced with spikes, the bigger spikes are on the back of their skulls, and on their backs; they also have considerably big spikes on their elbows and knees, and shoulders. No one has ever seen the face of a Velarian amongst the huans save for the select few who had performed an authopsy and had the security clearance to view those materials - they hide their skinless horrid face from the prying eyes with a mask. They are vastly different from most races, having a special nerve system that is based on subatomical reactions, their heightened senses, and unnaural strenght and agility makes them a fearsome opponent. But it's not these traits that make them so dangerous to humans and others. It is the deadly combination of their biological traits and technology. A velarian is able to excrete a fluid that covers them via the micrpscopic carves and capillar phenomena perfectly, thus rendering them invisible. The fliud is able to guide the photons that enter it across it's layer and around the velarian effectively excluding it from view. So it does with ultra and infra light, and seals off scents that'd emanate from the velarian. Due to it's nature and the carapace, it is quite dificult to distrupt the invisibility of a velarian. If a velarian is hidden in such manner, it is invisible to any sort of photon based receptors, and uie to it's unique physiology it is invisible to most scanners. All the while they use technology that is ot based on electricity or any known source of power. For example their "crossbow" that is basically kinetic. With no energy signatures at all, it's nearly impossible to find a hunter bfore it makes his move... And there is no doubt that, if there is an opponent on the battlefield, it will do it's best to kill it. Velarians believe in a religion of Hatred, and have tomes - Hate-tomes - that contain the main beliefs and thoughts behind it. The way a velarian thinks is simple, and can be summed up in one sentence: "Mercy kills the Hunter, while Hatred kills the Prey". They hate everything that is not velarian, so that they'll never feel any self conscience about killing their opponents, and making trophies out of them. They live mostly a solitary life, or in packs of 2-7. Rarely, during war or chasing a larger prey they form bigger teams, led by a master-hunter. Velarians don't have genders, there is only one, which is generally considered to be male. They have external pollination, like a frogs on earth, but lay only one egg. Usually, if a velarian comes in contact with a member of his species, the two decide who is the dominant, the alpha specimen. After the initial show-offs and smaller fights have finished, the two hunt together for a shorter or longer period of time. And after that, if the dominant proved to be well worthy of a partner to create a more efficient hunter they spawn an egg that'll hatch after 5 months. The young velarian is not sentient until it reaches it's 5th year of life. After that it's reaches a mental developement that enables it to understand speech - what is to humans more like a series of growls and screeching noises - and to use tools. Until that age it is kept like an animal, and is trained like a dog on earth. After reaching sentiency however, it begins to show that deadly cunning intelligence that is their species trait, and start to learn the hows and whys of hunting. Velarian ships are made of a material that cannot be found outside their territory of space. This matter is called velarium, and has unique quarklevel traits that enable velarians to use very different ships - that are incompatible with other races. ((due to the shortness of time I'll only post this much today, any questions about anything regarding this world is welcomed and will be answered asap)) |
