In interview, they assured they will be back to Portugal. Fans clap their hands.
Nowadays, Tokio Hotel are a global phenomenon that breaks through German boundaries but, instead of choose a capital in Middle Europe to get in touch with the journalists, they get themselves "at home". In Hamburg, few people can imagine the most famous band of the city (of course!) are there. In one of the most Vanguardist hotels of St. Paul, some tourists get in and out [of the hotel]. Some aware looks feel a strange presence, and "suspect" of something is about to happen is added to it. In the foyer there is a tacle with recorders while some people talk in not known languages. Tokio Hotel are housed there with fake names so people don't even notice that this teenagers idols are around. In the calm city of Hamburg, there is not even rumors about what is going on. No posters, no nothing.
All ritual before the interview seems like in Hollywood. In that day, the releasing date of Humanoid had been revealed. But, to make the present journalist's jobs easier, they revealed religiously four musics saved in a small iPod. All this secrecy where them are involved has a reason: today, Tokio Hotel are a huge in Germany, in the whole Europe and even on America, even they have the concurrence of the "rivals" Jonas Brothers, they are clearly the most famous of their country. And now, thinking they don't even were known three years back outside of their country. And now, here they are, in campaign of the Humanoid's releasing in the whole world.
To get a talk with Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Gustav Schaefer and Georg Listing, it's necessary get through a inside garden, go up some stairs and be stopped by a security guard that would intimidate most of the most small and shriveled population.
But, the though image fades away after the first smile and after a conversation about Portugal, "country with very nice food". An accurate comment, once there are very few restaurants in one city that is known to be one of the biggest harbors of the Europe. "Your is the best. There is no doubt. Even that, it's the best that I can recommend you here in Hamburg". The advice wasn't accepted but the conversation reduced the clime that, at least, asked for respect.
The first feedback of an interview with Tokio Hotel was positive. The guys were in a good mood and wanted to talk. Previews condition: the interview would be translated from German to Portuguese, «live», by a Brazilian woman that was living in Munich. She is used to this kind of operation, though and of big responsibility, but she never had contacted with Tokio Hotel and she didn't even know a lot about their music. But she showed that she is aware of the phenomenon when she said "They are huge here". Even before the entrance of the room where the conversation would go on, a corridor had a lot of video recording materials all around. Every interview were registered by a team, hire to do it.
Finally we arrived on the destiny. A room with two perpendicular couches to the band and the journalists, but it was necessary to wait some minutes more until fab four of Hamburg show up. The Kaulitz twins were in the front and they just spoke a little more than 15 minutes. It was timed until the last second with extra time for the last question. Gustav Schaefer and Georg Listing, more shy, just let themselves look and listen to the answers of the leaders of the band, but without show themselves oblivious. First image: Bill, the lead singer, still a lot of androgynous, forget David Bowie or Brian Molko (Placebo) of your time, he came up with a new hairdo, a little more common to a Rock band. The dreadlocks already were on the top of the head of that slim creature "since December", but that option "has nothing to do with the new album".
Away since December to recharge batteries, after years where a little grain of sand became a beach, Tokio Hotel went on with their life, separately. They exchanged ideas «by e-mail» and in this way they keep going on. They recorded between Germany and now the even closer America, «where the album was almost 100% produced». The idea «came from the producers» and was approved by the band. «The music's center is there». On the other hand, the Uncle Sam's lands, and mostly Los Angeles, gave them tranquility, which the European popularity made impossible to have. «We didn't want to stay all time in Germany. It would had been boring», confessed Tom Kaulitz. The brother tried to complete the idea: «We don't have vacations. We can't walk down the streets, that's why the best solution was to scape from here. We went to search for new experiences. We spent a lot of time on tour with the new album and we didn't want to go back to the same stuff but, at the same time, we needed to preserve Tokio Hotel's identity.»
And then Humanoid started borning, first album status post-change, but not attitude. «Our life completely changed, but the idea of the humanity already followed us since the past years. It has everything to do with out life's attitude, since childhood», remembers Bill Kaulitz, always ready to answer like we were in a contest of a TV Show.
Unlike with what is common in the «status» of Pop culture, Tokio Hotel abrely became associated to other genre or similar bands. This doesn't mean they found a new Chemistry formula for the song writing or that they founded a new genre. Nothing about that. But themselves can handle that question when they say that «never followed other bands» and they do «what they like to do», it means they try to «compose the best songs» they can.
In the end, there is the inevitable question: «Will fans like it?» Yes or no, the truth is that Tokio Hotel have some difficulty to explain what did happen with him.
«We already play since we were kids. Gustav started playing drums when he was 8 years old. At school, we were always waiting the classes to end because we wanted to play. I am glad that time is over», remembers Bill Kaulitz with some nostalgia on his eyes. Now, times are different also as the dreams. Tokio Hotel want to do their «first world tour» of their career and one of the binding cities is, for obvious reasons, Tokyo, where they have never been. And, of course, Portugal can't stay outside of the road. «We don't have dates for now but I am sure we are going to come back. I remember a very huge involvement from fans when we were there. I was so sad that I had to delay the show because of the surgery. Then we repeated it and it was one of the greatest concerts of our career», confesses Bill before say goodbye.
The journalist traveled with an invitation of Universal Music PortugalThe most active fans in the worldWhile Tokio Hotel were away, the fans never lost the view of them. Portugal wasn't exception or didn't he had, by Fergie's words, the fanbase more active of the planet. From Odivelas, she started following the band with almost 14 years old. "My parents said I would get sick of them, but I am almost 18 and I am still here." She, is one of the most actives, as the fan-meeting on Parque das Nações, in Lisbon, can prove it, where a choreography for the new song Automatic was prepared with detail. But "there were more fan meetings befor, done in 2007 and there were done some 2 for month", completes Fergie. And everything seems to continue, as Ana Nascimento defends, or Aninhas, from Barreiro. «There might happen something in my life and that thing might make me not so much active, but this seems to keep going on.» completes Susana Silva. «They say they are different but we are also different.». But what does make Tokio Hotel so special? The answer appears at eight voices. «Charisma. They are unique. They are great professionals. They started from anything.» If Bill Kaulitz is sure Tokio Hotel will come back to Portugal, the fans also think the same. «Of course they are going to come back!», answer them together, before Fergie remember the meet with her beloved musicians. «They are very tall and humble. They were really nice and attentive. We were really nervous but they were too. They never expected so many people», tell her, referring to Rock in Rio, where were 80,000 people. And about Humanoid, «it costs some Euros, but money doesn't matter», says Susana Silva.
