Bill Kaulitz was in Paris yesterday to record "Durch the nacht mit Bill Kaulitz" for the German channel Arte with a German journalist. He was in an excellent mood, smiled to the paparazzi and allowed several fans to take pictures with him.

Paparazzi, screaming fans and at the center of it all, two very different celebrities, though only at first glance: the Tokio Hotel frontman and the fashion designer, both of whom are among Germany’s most successful export goods. They’d never met before now, but they already get along superbly. The evening begins in the showroom of Wolfgang Joop’s Wunderkind label, where Bill Kaulitz willingly tried things out from Joop’s collection. Kaulitz admits that preferably he’d like to design his own collection, but is excited about the Joop’s new ideas. Then they go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Bill Kaulitz has appeared at the Paris landmark with Tokio Hotel before half a million people, but before this night had never been up to the top. A visit to the Palais Beauharnais follows. Here we find the headquarters of the German ambassador, and the residences of Wagner and Bismarck. Joop and Kaulitz seemed very taken with the Napoleonic Empire style. At the Café de Flore they talk about serious topics, such as the curse of the Internet and the associated increasing lack of appreciation of art and culture. So reports Bill, of the last Tokio Hotel album, many of the songs could be found on the Internet before the release; no wonder the general anticipation of new releases is reduced. Before continuing, Joop quickly asks for a pen and paper, in order to draw a portrait of the singer. As much as Bill Kaulitz had been happy that this unannounced visit to Paris had been spared the usual hype, it’s no good: When the two leave the Café de Flore, resourceful paparazzi are already waiting for them. The fans have already taken the weather, they plaster the Internet with photos of Joop and Kaulitz’s night walk, and bring Twitter to a halt. At the Pont des Arts and Joop Kaulitz quickly agreed: Paparazzo must be the worse job. Finally the night ends with a fashion masquerade ball, reminiscent of the Kubrick film “Eyes Wide Shut” where the two night owls forget the time. The next morning they meet again at the Wunderkind fashion show. They exchanged phone numbers, and want to see each other again, while Wolfgang Joop finds that they “are like twins that have been separated at birth.”

“Through The Night With…” is a big extravaganza, but it is also about the fear of aging, and the compulsion and continual struggle to create new good Looks. Bill Kaulitz and Wolfgang Joop are two perfectionists who are aware of their control mania, and have recognize even that evening how they try to control things.

In Los Angeles, sagt Wolfgang Joop, sei ja nun wirklich "nix los". Und überhaupt seien die Amis nicht an kontinentaler Kunst, sondern nur an Euro-Devisen interessiert. Ein bisschen unfair ist das schon. Hat sein Gast Bill Kaulitz doch gerade erst öffentlich angekündigt, er wolle mit Bruder Tom alsbald in die Westküstenmetropole ziehen. Vermutlich steckt aber nur besondere Fürsorge hinter der Bemerkung. Schließlich macht der Modedesigner im Laufe des Films aus der ARTE-Reihe "Durch die Nacht mit ..." mehr als einmal deutlich, dass er in dem Tokio-Hotel-Frontjungen sein jüngeres Selbst erblickt, wenigstens aber einen androgynen Geistesverwandten.

Dass Deutschlands Glamourpresse von dem Pariser Treffen der beiden schon weit vor der Ausstrahlung eifrig berichtete, ist bei Ansicht des wieder einmal trefflichen Beitrags (Regie: Cordula Kablitz-Post und Outi Turunen) übrigens begreiflich. Am Rande der Joopschen Modenschau im Rahmen der Pariser Fashionweek hetzen genügend Journalisten durchs Bild. "We were together the whole night", berichtet der Musiker stolz. Man zeigt sich allseits erfreut und interessiert.

Kennengelernt hatten sich Kaulitz und Joop aber schon am Abend zuvor. Beide sind vorab bestens über den Werdegang des anderen informiert - und voll des Lobes. Beide kommen aus der ostdeutschen Provinz, beide wussten schon in jungen Jahren, dass sie dort später nichts halten wird.

Das erste gemeinsame Touri-Ziel ist standesgemäß: Trotz der Bombendrohung irgendwelcher Terrorfrauen (Joop: "wahrscheinlich aus Penisneid") geht's todesmutig auf den Eifelturm. Joop, der inzwischen ausschaut wie Helmut Berger, kommt sich vor wie in einem Nouvelle-vague-Film. "Du bist Alain Delon, ich bin Romy Schneider", sagt er. Es ist eine seiner subtileren Zweideutigkeiten an die Adresse des jungen Begleiters.

Er sei ja eigentlich sehr kamerascheu geworden, sagt der Ältere später im Taxi. Sein Abbild, an das er sich 20 Jahre gewöhnt habe, das gefalle ihm nun nicht mehr. Vor allem seine Augen spiegelten unverhohlen, dass sie zu viel gesehen haben. Ein Dorian Gray! Ach Gottchen. Kaulitz nickt gnädig und punktet beim altmodischen Künstlerkollegen in der Brasserie mit Multimedia-Skepsis. Wenn er dieses Internet abschalten könnte, sagt Kaulitz, er würde es tun. Kaum macht man was, schon weiß es die Welt und entweiht die magische Kunst mit schnöden Kommentaren. Wie zum Beleg lungern vor der Tür gleich mal ein paar Teenies mit Handykameras - sowie ein Schwung Paparazzi mit ungleich schwererem Gerät.

Die selige Stimmung können die aber nicht mehr trüben. Kaulitz schwärmt von Bowie, Joop von Kaulitz. Ein toller Kerl sei das und ein prächtiges Model, diktiert der Designer am nächsten Tag der Bussi-Presse in die Blöcke. Die Telefonnummern wurden getauscht. Mal sehen, was daraus wird.
