I'm convinced Locke's death was faked (Richard's idea), solely for the purpose of convincing the others to come back.

Also, am I the ONLY one that doesn't understand why Locke is now known as Jeremy Bentham???

I was under the impression that there's no real significance in that name, it was just an alias Locke used. He couldn't use his real name just as Michael and Walt couldn't use theirs ... gotta keep up the lie to keep the island safe.

This is what I found on the real Jeremy Bentham:

Jeremy Bentham (15 February 1748–6 June 1832) was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer.

He was a political radical, and a leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law.

He was a child prodigy and was found as a toddler sitting at his father's desk reading a multi-volume history of England and began his study of Latin at the age of three.

He was best known for his advocacy of utilitarianism, a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined by its outcome - the ends justify the means.

Utilitarianism argued that the "right" action or policy was that which would cause "the greatest happiness of the greatest number".

His critics objected saying that it would therefore "...be acceptable to torture one person if this would produce an amount of happiness in other people outweighing the unhappiness of the tortured individual."

Hmmm...wonder if they're using that name for Locke because the end result of getting the 06 to the island will justify the means of convincing them to go.

He also developed the Panopticon: Perhaps this is the purpose of the island?

Most excellent!

Here's a little more from Lostpedia that I found to be very interesting:

Bentham's auto-icon

As requested in his will, Jeremy Bentham's body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his "Auto-icon".

The Auto-icon is kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of University College London, his alma mater.

For the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the College, the Auto-icon was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where he was listed as "present but not voting".

Tradition holds that if the council's vote on any motion is tied, the auto-icon always breaks the tie by voting in favour of the motion.

The Auto-icon has always had a wax head, as Bentham's head was badly damaged in the preservation process.

Here's a thought I have.
I wonder if Locke is really dead??? could it be that they used spiders on him to make him seem dead? like what happened to Nikki and Paulo. maybe that is what Ben was taking out of the vent was spiders in the box. I mean Expose was a little weird with all that. and maybe that's how the big guys are going to tie that episode in with the one of Locke. Or maybe I don't know anything.
Your thoughts please.................

Ok i just had a thought, That would not explain why Ben would want to leave Locke at a butcher shop. I think in the freezer or at least in a refrigerator.
Crap back to square one.

Good thought until you talked yourself out of it!

Maybe they can not only time travel, but have mastered suspended animation!

I think Locke is dead and used an alias while back in the real world because otherwise he would have been known as the Oceanic Seventh. He is all about protecting the island at any cost, plus is literate and so likely knew the implication of his alias. Cunning little Box Man, isn't he?

The thing is people revive on that island. Locke already died once on the island and came back. Plus, look at Christian Shepherd. He once was dead (very dead) but now he lives. And he is closer to Jacob! So maybe John won't lead the others when he comes back but knows he will be "one" with the island, closer to its real power when he is brought back. So it was a way for him to move "up the ladder" in a sense?

Also - OT from Locke, but I think Claire died in the explosion at the Other's village in S4. She just didn't know it till "Daddy" came and got her. Heck, maybe she still doesn't! :P

I DON'T GET IT!!!

It's obvious I was wrong about Locke's death being faked (I've never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer).
What I don't get is:
Why did Ben talk John down from the table...THEN he did exactly what Locke was going to do to begin with.

WHAT THE HELL???

Maybe if John committed suicide the island wouldn't let him back. Maybe if he had to die it had to either be natural or murder.

Kinda like how if you commit suicide you "won't get into heaven"?

So it looks like if you die ON the island...that's it...you're dead.

But if you die OFF the island and then come to the island...you're not dead?

Altho we're not quite sure exactly what happened with Claire.

Yea, but to me it seemed like Ben was just killing him to kill him... He said I'm really going to miss you John. That looked like to me that Ben would think John is dead. I mean DEAD. and not coming back to life. like he would not be seeing him again.

Maybe at that point he didn't think anyone would be going back to the island???

OY! I just dunno.

I think the reason he said he was going to miss John is a hint.
I think it hints at something bigger. Like that maybe Ben has hand picked John to take his place but needed John to prove himself over time first. Maybe once Ben's replacement is in place then the island will free him of any further responsibilities and he's free to live his life.
It was said that Ben is like the Dhali Lama and Richard the Penchant Lama. The Penchant Lama seeks out the NEXT Dhali Lama. He said to John when he tested him, which is what they do when actually finding these suspected children, that he wasn't the one. ONE what?
