Title: A Dane At The Wps - Tourney Report

Kaz - November 21, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
Practical note: half of this tournament report was written in advance.

Gorbad decided at some point to attend the wps GT November 18-19, and I decided to tag along. The plan was to fly over Thursday before the GT, play a couple of games at warhammer world, sleep at Alex West’s place, play a couple more games at warhammer world, then go to the tournament.

Two weeks before the GT I went to a Danish 2250 points tournament with the exact same army, and I have generally played vampire counts a lot lately, so I more or less think that I’m ready for the tournament

There was some restrictions in place, and they were:

No special characters
Max. two of the same special choice
No duplicating rare.

Sadly there was no restrictions on magic, but it’s better than nothing.

I use the following army

Strigoi vampire Lord army!

Strigoi vampire lord 435 pts
Iron sinews, curse of the revenant, summon ghouls

Necromancer 150 pts
Magic level 2, Book of arkhan, dispel scroll.

Necromancer 140 pts
Magic level 2, spell familiar, dispel scroll.

6 Ghouls 48 pts
6 Ghouls 48 pts
6 Ghouls 48 pts

5 direwolves 48 pts
5 direwolves 48 pts
5 direwolves 48 pts

20 Skeleton warriors 220 pts
Light armour, Champion, Standard

20 Skeleton warriors 220 pts
Light armour, Champion, Standard

20 Zombies 130 pts
Standard

12 Zombies 72 pts (necrobunker unit!)

5 fell bats 100 pts

2 spirit hosts 130 pts

6 Black knights 166 pts
Barding, standard

6 Black knights 191 pts
Barding, standard

2248 points
106 models in the army – 15 deployment entries
9 PD + book of arkhan
6 DD + 2 scrolls

The character setup is a little unusual in me preferring to take a lord over a count, the reason for this is actually very simple. First I wouldn’t take a third necromancer anyway, don’t want to be quite that filthy, and I don’t think a flying strigoi thrall is really needed, there isn’t *that* many warmachines around after all. Secondly a lord is a very good deal for the points if you’re not taking a fourth character anyway. And thirdly it gives me the magic number of powerdices for VC (9) that allows me to throw three dice at three spells.

My black knights are a little unusual by Danish standards, but I like to play them mainly as a support unit, where a unit of six with a banner is just perfect. They are often units of the match. Another good reason to take them like this is that it allows me to threaten WE armies a bit, as black knights are pretty good at dealing with tree spirits.

I believe it is a very good army, not ott or anything, but good none the less. The only real bad matchup is WE, which I really hoped not to run into, and there is pretty good odds for that anyway, with ‘only’ 12.5% of the players using WE.

My goal for the tournament is to get 10000+ points for gaming, low enough that even with losing a game big (when running into WE) I can still manage it by playing well in the other games)
And of course enjoy myself, but that goes without saying.

Note: Here ends what was written in advance.

Thursday

Gorbad and I went over on the Thursday, arriving in Nottingham at around 16 in the afternoon. We were picked up by chris legg, and was driven to Alex Wests place where we was to stay for the night.
Shortly after Alex came home from work, and we went to the warhammer world for a few pickup games, which for the record is a really nice place to play. And the prices at bugmans are actually decent!

Had two pickup games Thursday afternoon, the first being against
Chris Legg – Chaos mortals

Leggy’s army roughly consisted of:
Lvl4 on chaos steed (unseen lurker and pit of shades, can’t really remember the other spells)
Lvl2 bray shaman (scrolls)
Exalted on chaos steed
Exalted on boob worm
Chosen knights, non chosen knights, warhounds, mortal chariot, two herds, furies, shaggoth.

Forgot to take a picture of deployment, so here is one after my first turn.

On my left flank the shaggoth moved slightly forward, and was IF lurked into my black knights, but failed to kill them (killed two), which left me with three knights standing. It was then flanked by a unit of zombies and broke. Meanwhile my army generally advanced in the middle, with the spirit hosts getting charged by the exalted on boobworm (who had sword of might), which fluffed his attacks and got flanked by bats.
On my right flank the non-chosen got through my black knights, even if it did lose him the furies to do so.
My direwolves tried charging the warhounds, which elected to flee, straight through the chosen knights with exalted and lvl4, which failed their panic and ran.
This cleared the middle for me and my lord and the two skellie units pushed forward as aggressive as they could, and eventually my lord and his unit charged the chosen knights, but they didn’t break.
His lvl4 spent two tries at 5 dice on unseen lurker to save himself, but miscasted both times.
The two herds eventually went into the sides of my lords lord, and while it looked grim, my lord killed five gors, which left him and a single skeleton standing fighting two herds and the chosen knights.
Then my support arrived in the form of the other skellie unit flanking one of his beast herds, and while my lord killed his exalted champ, he killed my skeleton. Which wasn’t enough to keep him from autobreaking. And running of the table, panicking the warhounds off in the process. Then it looked like this:

My lord charged the beast herd with the lvl2, and my skellie unit charged the beast other beast herd, both of them breaking.

Ended up winning a

We went to eat in bugmans, which was actually decent food, at decent prices.

Next game up was against Alex West with brettonias
