I've yet to see it, but I really enjoyed the book, a dark and moving tale. I know that the film only scratches on some (controversial) things outlined in the book, but I hope it's a good movie anyway.

The sad part is that a Hollywood remake is already planned for 2010, for those that can't be arsed to read english subtitles.

Well it's only my own opinion N.I.B. and one without having read the original book (after having seen the movie, is reading the book still worth it do you think?), but I watched the movie earlier tonight, like finished watching it 10 mintues ago, and wow......

Seriously, WOW.....

Fantastic movie, absolutely brilliant.. I got to see it after having you mention it, and then checking out the trailer for it, and I mentioned it to my Team leader/manager at work, and he went out and found it and downloaded it (total pirate ), and his response was it was totally awesome.. this coming from someone that you couldn't say has a Vampire fetish like the rest of us, but one of the 'normal, common' folk.. but he leant it to another team member before I could get ahold of it

But this weekend, it was all mine, and tonight I finally gave it a spin.. and again.. wow.... loved it.. was absolutely brilliant.. as my manager said, it has no special effects or any of that stuff that you are used to seeing with a vampire movie, and that just adds to it completely. The fact that one of the characters is a vampire is almost secondary in alot of ways to the story.. I mean, it's definitely a big part of the story, but it never overtakes it, it just adds to what to me is an incredible tale.. I loved every minute of it.. the dark humour that runs through it was brilliant.

I cringe at the idea of a hollywood remake of this one. I just think so much is going to be lost in the translation of it. Being a westerner, for me part of what I enjoyed so much about this movie was it's europeaness (making up words I know), just the feel of it and just the different culture and all. A remake would lose that, it would lose the edge that for me really makes it. I really fear that they would make it far too PC and friendly to the familys.

Personally I don't think it needs to be remade at all. Any westerners that just cannot appreciate this film in it's current form (let's be honest, the hollywood remake will be aimed at the western market) are not worth the time and effort. This film is brilliant. Easily one of the best films that I have seen in a long while, and I would say not just as a Vampire film, this film just as a film on it's own has made it into my top ten favourites.

Glad you liked it, I've seen it now but I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I think it was a bit too serene and slow paced, Alfredson could've made more of the horror scenes and used music to better effect. But my expectations was probably a bit too high from reading all the hype, it was still a good movie (the outdoor scenes was filmed not too far away from where I live). The special effects were subtle, when used. Alfredson didn't want them to be distracting.

The book tends to delve a bit too much into the lives of minor characters like the local drunks and such, in that regard I prefered the movie. Though you get to know more about Eli, what she is and were she comes from, also the storyline about her caretaker Håkan is more - disturbingly - fleshed out. Everone I've heard (not that many actually) that have both read the book and seen the movie, prefers the book. I don't know anyone that have seen the movie first though.
