Dharmanic Candidacy Thread
With Sionis having departed us, all those that wish to be in the democratic running for the delegate position must state their candidacy here. All you have to say is "I'm running for WA delegate" or something of that like.
Keep in mind you'll have responsibilities as delegate to your region that you will not be able to keep if you wish to further a military career such as defending. That's why I won't be running at-least (also being delegate in your own region is a little tacky).
To be considered you must submit your application before Wednesday Aug 11 2:00 GMT.
The Rich Port - August 10, 2010 04:11 AM (GMT)
LOL, this is Random Chit Chat?
And Sionis left us? :(
Guess I'll just have to... TAKE HIS PLACE.
Sign me up. I wanna run for WA delegate.
Quadrimmina - August 10, 2010 05:28 AM (GMT)
The Republic of Quadrimmina nominates Dr. Arlo B. Lewis, Ph.D., of the City of Voi, Quadrimmina, as the Delegate for The Eastern Islands. We are sure most WA vets are aware of his record in the WA, and can agree that he will be a fantastic delegate.
Dr. Lewis has consistently shown his record of balancing his beliefs and the beliefs of our nation, and most importantly, its citizens. He has consistently asked for plebicites to be added to ballots to poll the general public about WA happenings and takes these suggestions to heart. He has pledged to listen to the concerns of his fellow delegations in making decisions if he is chosen for this most esteemed of honors. To follow in the shoes of such a visionary progressive as Sionis Prioratus would be a honor that we believe Dr. Lewis has earned.
Dr. Lewis has mainly liberal and libertarian views, and believes strongly in social safety nets for those less fortunate. He believes in ensuring that government is efficient, but wants it to be able to provide as much for their citizens as they may need. It is this vision that is shown in the Quadrimmina Constitution, of which he was one of the primary drafters.
We hope our fellow nations in the Eastern Islands will join us in supporting him for this esteemed position.
Co-signed:
Ellen J. Forge | Chancellor
Madison T. Lewis | Minister of Foreign Affairs

I'm still shocked that SP left. Still: sure, why not? I'll go ahead and nominate myself.
New Buckner - August 10, 2010 09:31 AM (GMT)
I would say that I would like to take this role upon myself and further aide our Region as it's representative, but due to the unfortunate campaigning that appears to be ahead of the people of New Buckner, I must decline.
(OOC: I will be departing in the next few weeks as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. I'll be back sometime in Dec, then go again around Feb. I will be active when I can, while we are in port and such, but I will be back strong upon our return.)

hezekiah - August 11, 2010 12:23 AM (GMT)
I am running for the WA Delegate Position.
What I can bring as a delegate?
I can make sure we get legislation that benefits our region. I would also be in a position to recruit people to our region. The more influence our region gains, the more power we as a collection union would have more power individually just because you are apart of this region. I will also lobby to consolidate all regions by partnering up with all region delegates, who are willing, and building a supper majority with our region in the lead. I will go in more depth of how this can be achieved if elected.
Quelesh - August 11, 2010 07:10 AM (GMT)
So, how things would work with me as delegate:
If there's enough interest, I'd like to vote on WA proposals the way most of my regionmates want me to vote, similar to the way 10000 Islands does things. I'll hold a poll, probably on these forums, and region natives who are WA members could vote yea or nay on the proposal. I'd vote the way the region does.
This could result in situations in which I'm voting against a proposal I like, or vice versa, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for democracy. Then again, if there's not much interest in this, I can always just vote however I want, but I'd like to go the democratic route if enough people will actually vote on these forums.
This wouldn't apply to approving proposals though; I'd reserve the right to approve whatever proposals I like.
Just to give you guys an idea of what positions I take: I'm a very strong believer in human rights, and I have no regard for "national sovereignty" arguments on human rights issues. If a nation wants to be able to abuse and oppress its people, it shouldn't be in the WA.
I'm very much a social libertarian, and I am against proposals that require nations to restrict the freedom of their people. I doubt that I would ever of my own volition (i.e. without a majority vote of region natives) vote for a Moral Decency proposal, for example. I support proposals that further human rights and individual freedom in the social sphere. That said, I'm inclined to leave a nation's political system and economic system largely alone, except in the case of a pressing need for international intervention.
As far as Security Council proposals are concerned, I'll vote for or against them if you guys want, although I'm personally less interested in the SC than I am in the GA.
If anyone has any questions about my positions on issues or anything else, please ask.
Ainocra - August 11, 2010 09:34 AM (GMT)
Why did he leave?
Having served as the Delegate for Dark Skyes for a loooong time prior to coming here and harboring no military ambitions at all I feel that I am uniquely qualified for the job.
If you guys want me to do it then I am game.

A question I would like the candidates to answer is:
How important is it to you that a resolution be well written? Would you vote for a resolution whose intent was good, but which contained numerous grammar or spelling errors? What if the phrasing was such as to induce confusion about the actual effects of the resolution?

Spelling and grammar errors are presumed not to exist in passed resolutions, having been gnomed into the proper order. So those don't concern me over much as any well written resolution will only contain a minimum of these mistakes to begin with.
On the point of confusing resolutions I would ask the author to clarify the language before submitting it, or interpret its meaning should it already be in submission.
Then I would be in a position to clarify these issues to everyone in an understandable fashion. Therefore we would be able to reach a consensus as to how I as the delegate should vote based on the will of the population.

You can continue posting in this thread, however it is now 2:00 GMT, so voting has began, and all candidates have been decided.
Voting will run till 2:00 GMT Aug 14. All natives are strongly urged and encouraged to send The Dharma Electorate a telegram with your two candidates, all of the telegrams will be collected as votes to ensure a secret closed box for voting. Only one vote is known, and that is Sionis's vote, he put forth an endorsement of Quelesh. (I will count one vote towards Quelesh, and discard his other vote because he only voted once. I will not give this benefit to anyone else, because.. to be fair, Sionis isn't replying anymore to telegrams, so I can't ask him for his second vote, but I still want his last words to have some effect.)
You cannot use your two votes to vote for the same candidate, and you must vote for a candidate that has signed up in this thread.
Your candidates, Dharma, include: Ainocra, Hezekiah, The Rich Port, Quadrimmina and Quelesh.
If you're going to vote, you must vote twice. Sionis is being given a special grant by me, because of the explained difficulties of getting a hold of a retired GAer who is leaving his nation inactive to die.
I recommend that all candidates use this thread to make your points clear, and state why they specifically would make a good candidate. I'd encourage candidates to delve into their political affiliations, for example, Sionis made it very clear that he was a liberal (practically Scandinavian) international federalist.. you'd do well to make it clear what your policies are towards international sovereignty. Soverignist? Moderate? Federalist? Economic Soverignist? Political or Social Soverignist? What categories in the WA, generally turn you off, (some for example will not vote for a Moral Decency proposal, or others, Environmental.. Alsted is infamous for voting against Free Trade proposals.) What is your stance on the SC? The GA? How Active will you be? Blah .. Blah.. Blah. Good luck to all candidates.
VOTING HAS NOW BEGUN!

Well, it must be made clear that if such a resolution was submitted, the poster would be urged by many people (myself included) to have it taken down so they could properly edit it before resubmission. Any badly written proposal with good intent can be changed into a good proposal with good intent.
If the phrasing was to induce confusion, then I would probably leave it to the people of Dharma to decide. However, if that's the case, it's probably something controversial that I would vote against. Circumstances must of course be taken into account though.

Also Hezekiah is Israelite Nation? Right!?
Quadrimmina - August 12, 2010 02:55 AM (GMT)
Hello Members of The Eastern Islands of Dharma,
I am Ambassador Arlo B. Lewis, and I am currently a candidate put forth by the Republic of Quadrimmina for Regional Delegate. I would like to let you know a bit about my positions. Personally, I'm a social libertarian with mild liberal tendencies. I believe in social safety nets. I also firmly believe in nations working together to solve our mutual problems in a collaborative way.
It is my firm belief that Dharma should be given much more say in the runnings of the office of Regional Delegate. To this effect, I would urge my fellow nations to message the RD with any concerns they have about legislation via TG, and would take any concerns to heart. I also believe that the forums here should be used more to gauge the beliefs of those in the region. The RD is, of course, the voice of the region.
Approvals would probably be on my call, unless I get a TG or two strongly dissenting on the proposal (or strongly supporting it). Votes would probably require input for the region. If I don't get any TGs, and I cannot get any responses on the forums, then of course I'd vote a way that I decided.
I believe firmly that common sense solutions should be applied to problems in a way that gives nations choices but at the same time upholds the common sense principles about the resolution. There's gotta be choice that accomodates multiple styles of nations, but upholds the noble intent of resolutions. If the resolution has a problem in either ideology, form, or intent, I will gladly tell them to shove it up their ass...or tell them my objections and withhold my vote.
All in all, I want Dharma to be a more democratic place, I want input, and I want you to be more active. If this is the kind of Dharma you want, then vote for me!
Any questions?

Numerous spelling and grammatical errors can be annoying, but if the proposal is a very good one otherwise and does something that needs to be done, I'm willing to overlook the typos. I recognize that English is not the first language of many NS players, and know that the grammar may not always be perfect.
That said, if it's so badly written as to be unintelligible, or if the meaning of the proposal is obfuscated or distorted by bad writing, I wouldn't support it. Those kinds of proposals don't generally make it to vote anyway, thankfully.
As I said before, though, if the WA-member natives are interested I'd like to represent Dharma more democratically in the WA, so the delegate vote on a proposal would preferably be up to popular vote.
Ainocra - August 13, 2010 09:49 AM (GMT)
Good morning everyone.
I am Colonel Alcon Enta, nominee for the position of regional delegate. I have served in the world assembly for a great deal of time both as the Ambassador of Ainocra and as the regional delegate of Dark Skyes prior to our emigration here.
I have the experience that a job of this magnitude requires. I have authored several proposals and have one at vote right now. I know how to get the job done.
My political leanings are somewhat pronounced. I believe in personal freedom above all things, followed closely by the freedom of the state to act in whatever manner they see fit for the benefit of their people.
I am willing to compromise in the name of the greater good and as your delegate I would be in a position to enact your will in the General Assembly and in the Security Council.
I will always actively seek input from you before I vote on a resolution. I will strongly voice both my opinion and the opinion of anyone in the region during the debates. Even if those opinions differ from my own.
I see my role as your advocate to the world.
