Janet Selby never imagined she was anything other than a Canadian.
After all, she has lived in Canada for all of her 47 years. She went to school here, voted in elections, travelled on a Canadian passport and built a successful career as an accountant and corporate recruiter.
But a recent call from her online broker forced her to confront a long-forgotten past. Ms. Selby spent the first four days of her life in the United States, born in 1963 to two Canadians pursuing graduate work at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill.
... In the end, many of those affected may not owe any U.S. taxes because they’ll get credit for any taxes they’ve already paid to Canadian authorities under a Canada-U.S. tax treaty. |
Just another absurdity! Selby's parents were both Canadian and going to university in the US when she was born. She was there a whopping 4 days then back to Canada, and now they dare to harass her almost 50 years later? :nonono:
Oh yeah, they can let Goldman Sachs, the Federal Reserve, and all their buddies LOOT TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, AND SEND IT ALL AROUND THE WORLD TO HELP THEIR BUDDIES IN A BAILOUT (DUE TO THEIR OWN DERIVATIVE CRIMINAL ACTIONS IN THE FIRST PLACE), AND NO ONE GETS IN TROUBLE BECAUSE THEY'RE INSIDERS.
NOW THE TAX MAN IS GOING AFTER CITIZENS WHO LIVE ALL OVER THE WORLD AND MAKING THEM ANTI UP TAX MONEY (EVEN THOUGH THE US AND CANADA HAVE A TAX TREATY THAT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF BALANCING THE ISSUE OUT)?
Did you see the quote above that in the end, after making her dig up all her records since birth and going to the expense of having an accountant do this, there wouldn't be that much to pay due to the US - Canada Tax treaty whereby you get credit for what you pay in your country of residence to apply against what you owe in the other country! This is harassment, plain and simple, and if Canada allows this, they are nuts!
The question I have is this: So in all this HARMONIZATION and NORTH AMERICAN UNION CRAP that's going on, why doesn't the US adopt the same policy as Canada and other countries, whereby once you are no longer a resident of a country, you no longer pay tax to that country but to the one you reside in. The US is the only country that taxes its Citizens WORLDWIDE, if they no longer live there. That is what needs to change!
Canada needs to say NO to this nonsense. For the US to think they can fine Canadian banks for not helping them is a joke. WHERE IS CANADA'S BACKBONE ON THIS ONE? THE US HAS NO BUSINESS TELLING CANADIAN BANKS WHAT THEY CAN AND CAN'T DO. THE ARROGANCE IS OVER THE TOP!
