Bought a new gun yesterday. Got a Savage .17 HMR. Got it for $160 without a scope (Dick's Sporting Goods) and ordered a scope online when I got home. I got the 93R17. The bolt is SOOOOOOO smooth when chambering and ejecting shells. The gun is definately louder then a .22 or .22 mag but just shooting it you can tell the difference in velocity. Can't wait to get the scope so I can sight it in. I'm putting a 8-32x42mm varmint scope on it. Also ordered some CCI 17 grain hollow points for it to compare them with the remington 17 grain V-Xam boat tails I bought with the gun. I'll probably end up using the hollow points for hunting bigger small game (Woodchucks-yotes) and the V-max loads for squirrels and the occasional crow. I'm gonna go on record as saying the crows that sit in a tree 200 yards from my house are in trouble now! (And coyotes too!) I'm ready for squirrel season now. And with the super high power scope, head shots souldn't be a problem out to 100 yards! At 100 yards on 32x there is only a 3 foot F.O.V.!!!

Congrats on a fine gun. Matt is waiting to get the 93R17 BTVS. Savage DOES make a very accurate gun. Enjoy getting those squirrels at 100 yards. It is VERY possible.

I really wanted the 93R17 BVSS (stainless steel barrel) but Dick's didn't have one and I didn't want to wait. I also really wanted the Marlin 917 VS. I just want a rifle with a stainless barrel but oh well, I like this one a lot anyways! I took a 250 yard shot at an un-wanted pest last night but had no clue where to aim so I aimed a little high and about 4 inches right to go with the 10 mph wind. Where the bullet hit was fairly close too! Can't wait for the scope to get here tomorrow. I'll try and post a picture of it too.

Jake that scope will make all the difference. Here is a link to the site for what Matt already has for his.

Leupold Scope

He got the 4.5x14-56mm Long Range with the Varmint Hunters Reticle. The scope is AMAZING. Funny he is waiting for the gun and you are waiting for the scope. By the way that scope was WAY too much money. Yours is probably a much better deal. Good luck with it.

I was looking at that scope and like the design. Don't need high rings. But I noticed the price was WAY too high. Mine will be here tomorrow. It's an 8-32x42mm. It was $80.

Jake you are really going to like that setup. I think your biggest problem will be finding the squirrels when you have the power turned all the way up. 3 feet at 100 yards is going to be tough to find that little critters. Enjoy it and shoot it often.
