Personality:
Like his appearance, most people assume that Severus is a slimy person, though he has a soft side under all of the sarcasm and cold tones. Most of the time, he puts his back to the world and holds it at arm’s length when he does tend to face it. He isn’t very good with speaking to people in public, he lacks emotion in his voice to sell something and definitely can’t seem like he’s happy even when he is.

The general way that Severus acts is cold; he isn’t exactly the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to his personality. He has trouble with expressing how he feels because revealing his feelings is emotional exposure and he fears rejection from not just Lily but any girl. Exposure is a great fear of his due to what happened to him in his fifth year (see worst memory), and has haunted him ever since. It also doesn’t help that Severus’ father was abusive towards his mother and neglectful towards him as well.

For those who get to know the more inner Snape (Lily), and anyone who can dare get that far, you will discover that he’s a rather nice young man. He’s got a kind heart and really cares about other people, though he tends to hide his weakness so others won’t find out anything about him. (Spoiler alert) As we discover in the seventh book of Harry Potter, Severus isn’t really a bad person, he seems like Death Eater material though he’s a good person through-and-through.

Overall:
Severus, in short, is a very unkempt young man. Since he was young he has had a shaggy look to him, his hair is usually unbrushed and fairly greasy and his skin looks oily as well. Another thing about him that he’s kept since his childhood is the length of his hair, which reaches to about his shoulders and is the same color as his eyes (black). Due to the greasy look, he has been picked on uncounted times by the Marauders and often dubbed a slimy git.

Along with his dark hair, Severus was cursed blessed with pale skin, it almost having a sallow look to it. His nose is hooked and one of the first things about him that you would notice if you looked only at his face. His eyes are very nicely set, having short lashes so that they’re almost unnoticed. Severus is a very attractive-looking young man if you like pale skin and black, greasy hair. Most people don’t find him very handsome, though.

Severus’ sense of style is not that fashionable, he goes more for what’s comfortable rather than what looks good. When he’s not in his Death Eater uniform, he generally wears black shirts and trousers. Though he prefers to wear something comfortable, he tries to have a formal look to himself. Seeing that he has a fairly slim (though not muscular) build, so black seems to look very nice on him. He’s hardly ever seen with any other color (except maybe green or silver).

History:
Severus Tobias Snape was born on January 9, 1960 to the pureblood mother Eileen Snape (nee Prince) and muggle father Tobias Snape. His earliest years aren’t known, though his history is riddled with Severus’ father abusing his mother and child neglect. Things are suggested that things in the house weren’t always peaceful and that his parents argued nearly constantly. It suggests that Tobias may have been more than neglectful but also abusive towards his son as well as his mother. It came from Snape’s mouth that his father wasn’t a kind man, as he said to Lily:

Lily Evans: "Doesn’t your dad like magic?"
Severus Snape: "He doesn’t like anything, much."

Lily has been a part of Severus’ childhood since he saw her playing with her sister (Petunia) at the park in Spinner’s End. Since that first day, he has been obsessively in love with her, and has been friends with her. He adores her caring attitude and her adventurous ways. Throughout his entire friendship with her he has loved her. His thoughts of going to Hogwarts was immediately even more interesting when he found out that Lily had also gotten an acceptance letter. He had hoped that she would be sorted in Slytherin with him, though he was bitterly disappointed when he found out that she was a Gryffindor.

Severus’ years at Hogwarts were fairly unpleasant due to the Marauders. His immediate enemy was James Potter, whom also has a love interest in Lily. He spent most of his free time trailing after the Marauders, hoping that Lily wouldn’t fall in love with James despite the boy’s best efforts. Once, Severus got curious as to what Remus was doing each month when he disappeared, and Sirius told him to go down the hole to the Whomping Willow. James saved him from being transformed or worse.
