Just finished Dead Space, too. I thought the game was very easy, I'd stocked up about 10 large health packs for the last boss and didn't even use a small one. Throughout the game, I never once died at the hands of any of the Necromorphs, just environmental hazards. Still, it was plenty fun, even though the jump out scares are pretty limp, given what a pushover the enemies are. I think I'll try out Impossible mode now, maybe that's proper Survival Horror.

Holy shit... been a while since I've logged in the games I've beaten, so this is going to include some from last year too. But from what I remember...
Lost Planet Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (beat Akuma with Guile, now THAT'S an ordeal) Gunner's Heaven Zero Gunner 2 Under Defeat Dead or Alive 3 (with Leon... the final boss is total hax Battle Fantasia (with Urs... the final boss is total hax, yet again) Kirby Super Star Ultra Legend of Kage 2 8-Bit Is Enough (last and best episode of Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People) Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword Gears of War Panzer Dragoon Zwei Grand Theft Auto IV The Red Star (just now, all in one sitting... took me a LOT longer than I anticipated) A massive game rush... appropriate, as I'll be heading back to college on Sunday. Agh. |

Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
In all honesty, this is easily one of the best games I've ever played. Despite my normal hatred of SRPGs (any and all I can think of with the exception of this one), I really, truly loved this game. It was straight-up fun and the artistic style was brilliant. I liked it so much I've spent $130 to order a sealed limited box of the game from Japan. Earth Defense Force 2017 (360) I've beaten easy, normal, and hard difficulties, so far. I've still got to work on hardest and inferno. Despite everything about this title practically screaming that it was a budget title (including the $30 launch price it had), it's undeniably lots of fun and a lot better than the vast majority of full-blown, retail titles released lately. Already spent about 26 hours on it and I do not regret a minute, probably going to end up with something like 50... and it's a third-person shooter. Kirby Super Star Ultra (DS) At first, I was disappointed with how much the game was almost exactly the same old thing that it used to be (I love the original, one of my favorite games, but I had no reason to buy it again on handheld), but, after unlocking the new games, I was quite a bit satisfied with it. While I think they still could have shaken the original games up more (they're almost identical aside from some incredibly minor changes), it was a good remake... I was also happy to see some legitimate difficulty in the "true" arena. UN Squadron (SNES) Beat this one twice, with both Shin and Greg. Got a copy for my birthday and finally got around to playing this one. I liked it more than I anticipated, but I did have somewhat low expectations set by playing it on emulator and not being initially impressed. It was a lot of fun, just took a little while to get into... It really plays differently than most shmups, and I think that's why I didn't get into it, at first. I kinda wish it would have had a little more relevancy to the source material though (being a fan of the Area 88 OVAs), hahaha, it got a bit wacky. Batman (NES) The last boss in this game is fucking unfair. Seriously, who the hell had the idea to make the Joker THAT broken? That out of the way, this was a really good game, and pretty damn competent for a bit of a Ninja Gaiden clone. It had hilariously little to do with the movie, but I didn't really give a crap, it was too much fun for me to care. Well, too much fun and an NES game. I mean, seriously, how many NES games were really good with source relevancy, anyway? Shatterhand (NES) I beat this one just today, along with Batman, bat-to-back (awful pun). I honestly liked this one even better than Batman, and I can really see why my friend is so fond of the game. I kinda liked the "American-ization" of it from the Japanese version, they really changed a lot and I thought quite a bit of the changes were really neat and helped make it unique and memorable. |

Just beat Spiritual Warfare for the NES, and believe me, it's a fact I take no joy in.
A friend of mine wanted me to get to and fight the final guy, who, big surprise, turned out to be the Devil, himself. 8-bit Ganon looked more menacing. And no, he wasn't the thief who stole my copy. This was his, and he had the receipt to prove it. (Damn, I really wanted to thank him, too.) We laughed at how lousy the ending was, and locked it in a box, never to be played, again. |

Alright, big update.
MUSHA (VC/Genesis) The first time I played this game, I didn't get all that into it, but the same was true for Axelay... which I'm pretty sure I've made known, by now, is one of my all-time favorite shmups. I got really into it, this time, and ended up loving it. It really is a great game, I just think that the time I played it, the first time, I wasn't well-enough adjusted to shmups to get used to the fast pace. Managed to one credit clear it and came very, very close to no miss clearing it (I choked on the next-to-last stage's boss). R-Type Dimensions (XBLA) Well, I've beaten R-Type and R-Type 2 before, but I beat them again on this enhanced remake which... doesn't actually change the gameplay at all (aside from the really cool co-op modes). I was kinda skeptical of this game at first but ended up loving it. I managed to no miss clear R-Type, too. Commando: Steel Disaster (DS) Although this game is certainly a bit derivative of Metal Slug, it's still a damn good game. Sure, it gets a bit repetitive, there's not nearly as much animation, etc., but it plays well and it's a load of fun. I beat it, including the secret levels, and I've got to heartily recommend it to any Metal Slug fan, especially those who have gotten tired with how the series has gotten a bit stale. Call of Duty: World at War (360) Cleared it on Veteran difficulty, too. This is probably Treyarch's best attempt at a Call of Duty game and I really enjoyed it. I was glad that the Japanese were finally unapologetically represented as what they truly were during that period and not made needlessly sympathetic. I like it when a game manages to make the game have decent levels of both fun and realism. Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp (XNA) XNA are the Xbox's community made games (still have to pay for them, though). This one plays very, very similarly to the PDA stages from Alien Hominid. Despite being a bit of a copy-cat, the game is rather fun and the graphics are very well done for a community title. Easily justified the bit of money I spent on it. The Maw (XBLA) This game is adorable. I absolutely love the colorful style of it. Despite the fact that the game is rather simple and easy, I still managed to enjoy it, nonetheless. I don't see why more all ages games can't be as quality as this. The game was also only 10 dollars and came with a free premium theme and picture pack, they were practically giving it away. Pastry Wars (XNA) The gameplay for this one was a lot like Space Invaders, but that's not what made me like it so much... it was the artwork and peculiar style. It's not the deepest game in the world and it's pretty short but it put a smile on my face and was well worth the 200 points (I wish some other people would get this, too). Bust-A-Move Again (PS2/Arcade) I completed the single player game once, anyway. I'm not so great at Puzzle Bobble games, to be honest, so I'm actually surprised I even managed to do that. Grid Seeker (PS2/Arcade) This one was a lot better than I initially gave it credit for, especially with some of the really cool boss fights that it head. Unlike some arcade shmups, you can't just credit feed it, run out of lives and you're back to a checkpoint... Which can make some of the bosses pretty hard if you fudge up a bit, since you won't get too many power-ups on the way there. Insector X (PS2/Arcade) I seriously wish I didn't force myself to beat this one because it drove me absolutely nuts doing so. It's not the hardest shmup I've ever played, but it easily one of the most frustrating (and it takes a lot for a game to really frustrate me). I don't know if I can count how many times I died because of the asininely humongous hitbox my character has. One of the biggest problems was that the gun my character held was low on the hitbox, so I had very little defense on the top of him. Kuri Kinton (PS2/Arcade) Objectively speaking, this game is nothing amazing, but I managed to enjoy it. It has a really quirky style that it brings to the table. The gameplay mechanics feel a bit broken and outdated, but even the game's ridiculous bosses didn't manage to stop me from making my way to the end and beating the last boss (who was, let me tell you, ridiculously unfair). Was this based on an anime? If not, it also gets major bonus points for creativity. The Legend of Kage (PS2/Arcade) I'm not sure if it entirely qualifies as beaten, but I did get to where the stages loop. Kinda makes me want to play Legend of Kage 2. Mike, if you're reading this, is that worth getting? Liquid Kids (PS2/Arcade) Visually, this game is extremely appealing to me. I absolutely adore the cute graphics. However, the game didn't seem to be put that well together, otherwise (much like what I thought of Capcom's Mega Twins). I wanted to like it more than I did, but I couldn't. Majestic Twelve (PS2/Arcade) Pretty cool Space Invaders game. Honestly, there's not much more to say than that. Raimais (PS2/Arcade) I hated this game and have no idea why I forced myself to beat it. It's like Pac-Man if Pac-Man were a spacecar in some ridiculous future. Space Invaders '95 (PS2/Arcade) Very cool! This seems to be Taito's answer to Parodius and I thought it was done pretty well. I'm just disappointed that I couldn't play as the cat unless it was a 2 player game. :( Metal Slug 7 (DS) Although MS7 is probably the best numbered Metal Slug since Metal Slug 3 (although it might not be as good as 6), I just couldn't find myself getting that into it and have only beaten the laughably easy Beginner mode this far. MS has, sadly, gotten a bit stale for me. I'm not sure there's a proper way to innovate the series to really bring back that magnificent spark it once had. On the bright side, I found myself enjoying Commando: Steel Disaster a lot. Baroque (Wii) My first roguelike! I have to say, it was actually a pretty decent experience, too. The game, sadly, ended up getting a bit too repetitive. There was very little variety in the environments and the game felt a little too samey each time you died and had to go back through the dungeon. It ended up being played a little too similarly on each run. It was still good, I just felt that with a bigger budget it could have been even better. Xevious (XBLA/Arcade) Technically, you can never "beat" Xevious, but I did get all of the gamerscore available for it and got to where the stages loop on one credit. Considering I was a bit disappointed with buying the NES version on the VC, I think I might have a hard time explaining why I got this version, too. I guess it just had something about it that made me come back to it. Hard to say what, exactly. Fable II Pub Games (XBLA) Another one that technically can't be beaten... It does have 15 tournaments, however, and I did manage to place in (and win the prizes from) all of them. I also got all the gamerscore. The game wasn't anything amazing (considering I got it free, I can't complain), but it did give me a very strong urge to make Fable II the next game I buy. I'm almost positive it will be, now. Fatal Labyrinth (Genesis/360) This is now easily one of my favorite Genesis games. Another roguelike, I quickly managed to get really into it and beat it in a day or two. I probably liked this one a little bit more than Baroque (not do demean Baroque, whatsoever, I just very much enjoyed this). I can't say what exactly it was about the game that had me so into it, but it was just this very addictive experience I had to see through to the end. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Genesis/360) The single-player for this game is creepily identical to Kirby's Avalanche. I realize that they're both Puyo Pop games, but the stage progression, difficulty curve, and patterns used by the bosses all seemed to be almost identical to KA. I think KA was the better game, though, since it was more colorful, had better music, and, was, well, Kirby. Miner Dig Deep (XNA) Another XNA game, I enjoyed this one a lot. Though the game technically does not end, there is a maximum depth you can dig to and I reached it twice (you're allowed to start the game over after finding the enormous diamond at the bottom the first time, but the second time you just hit the end). It's very similar to the flash game Motherload ( http://www.miniclip.com/games/motherload/en/ play it! It's highly addictive and a lot of fun), which is a definite good thing. I put several hours into it, and I think 200 points was a more than fair price to pay. Altered Beast (Arcade/360) I definitely like the Genesis version better, as far as this one goes. Although the graphics are much cleaner looking and there are some pretty cool effects, the gameplay feels a bit too... I don't know, quarter-munchy? I managed to clear the Genesis Altered Beast without continuing (you need a code to, anyway), but I used quite a few continued on this one. The game just felt a bit... cheaper. It wasn't bad, though, I enjoyed it, and I still think the Genesis version was a good game. Fantasy Zone (Arcade/360) Obviously had to 1 credit clear this one, which took me a while to do. The final boss to the game is among the most unfair final bosses I have ever fought in my history of playing video games, and I managed to win by almost pure luck. It was a good game (I enjoyed Super Fantasy Zone more, though), but that boss was just brutal. How does a game this cute get to be this challenging, anyway? :p Shinobi (Arcade/360) This game would honestly be considered pretty good by me if it weren't for one thing... you can't continue on the last set of stages! Why in the world would they do such a thing, especially considering the last stages are pretty tough? I did beat it, though. This isn't as good as some of the other Shinobi games, by a long shot, but it's still a good game. Has a peculiar feel to it, though. I still can't figure out why Joe didn't wear a Shinobi mask and why a lot of the enemies and settings felt South American (or, for that matter, why one of the bosses was a bunch of stacked robots that slowly moved towards you). Space Harrier (Arcade/360) I didn't really like Space Harrier 2, but I do like the original a bit, if only for the fact it actually lets you continue and seems to have a slightly better framerate. I'm very bad at this game and practically credit-fed it to beat it. The fake depth using sprite scaling just confuses the tar out of me and I couldn't get used to it. Congo Bongo (Arcade/360) Pretty sure this one loops forever, although it is a reasonable challenge to actually make it to where the game loops, which I did. Very impressive looking for an '83 game, feels like a bit of a cross between Donkey Kong and Snake Rattle 'n Roll. Zaxxon (Arcade/360) I think Zaxxon, like Congo Bongo, also loops forever. I managed to get to the 3rd loop on this one, however, which I think should also qualify as "beaten." I didn't like this one as much as CB, although this was primarily because I had a ridiculously difficult time telling where my ship actually was with the perspective. It had a neater presentation than CB, though. ESWAT (Genesis/360) I wasn't immediately a fan of this one, but it grew on me pretty quickly. The gameplay has some major quirks, and it can feel a bit (maybe more than a bit) unfair at times, but it's still quite playable and has a very neat premise that I enjoyed. You don't see much media with that campy future-cop feel, anymore, and I liked that a lot about ESWAT. Alien Storm (Genesis/360) I didn't entirely like it at first, but after turning rapid-fire on I found myself liking it a lot. There's a bit of a lack of variety and the basic stages lack depth, but who cares? The game presents itself in a really neat fashion, has hilarious credits, and the alternate stages (especially the running ones) are a blast. Ristar (Genesis/360) When I played this last year (or was it the year before?) on the Virtual Console, I didn't find myself liking it too much, but upon giving it another shot, I have to say that I liked it. The somewhat slow pace didn't bore me this time and I managed to get really into it. I'm somewhat saddened, now, that it didn't catch on as well as Sonic did, because I genuinely think Ristar would have made a better franchise. Dynamite Headdy (Genesis/360) I found this game to be quite a bit overrated. Not to say that it was bad, but some of the levels and bosses had some pretty poor design and the difficulty felt very arbitrary in many more than one areas. The quirkiness of the game actually made me like it a little bit less, as it seemed to be trying way too hard to be random. Kid Chameleon (Genesis/360) This game REEKS of 90's attitude and I love it. Although it was way too long to not have a save system in place (fortunately Sonic's Ultimate Game Collection allows saving) and it got to be a bit repetitive, it was a genuinely fun platformer and not a crappy Mario rip-off like I had thought it would be before I played it. The last boss was a total jerk, though, and the stage before him wasn't any nicer. *wipes forehead* Phew, that catches me up :p |

Went to Gameworks today.
The House of the Dead 4 (Arcade) Rambo (Arcade) Both of them by Sega, and it was interesting seeing the movie clips from the Rambo films integrated into the game. Naturally, though, there was no level based on the movie adaptation of First Blood, much less the novel Rambo and his first movie were derived from. |

Fable II (360)
The game started off absolutely wonderful and really managed to draw me in... unfortunately, however, the ending was rather disappointing and there was very little to do after the game ended. I feel like the game was rushed a little bit, as there are several bugs and it really felt like there should have been more content than was offered. Still, though, it was a fine game, and I enjoyed it quite a good bit. |
