Kensington Green paced back and forth in front of what she was told was the entrance to UNIT, trying to mask her nervousness with irritation. Only a couple weeks into her assignment on Torchwood 21 and she was already planetside playing delivery girl. Granted, she had been sent as delivery girl because she was qualified to explain the intel and accompanying technology her delivery consisted of, but she still felt like she was wearing a pizza girl shirt. She scowled as she shifted a bit in what she was actually wearing: as much of a suit as she could stand: a starched black shirt, "nice" jeans, a pair of trainers that weren't too scuffed, and a fancy-ish black coat. As always, she carried everything in her shoulder bag, and she prayed to every deity she could think of that it wouldn't be confiscated upon her entrance into the base.

Ken had heard a lot about UNIT, most of it involving how they didn't get along so well with Torchwood; the entire flight back to the planet had consisted of the pilot rambling on about how badly UNIT had dealt with the Sontaran ATMOS crisis and how Torchwood would have handled it better. Actually, she'd originally heard a lot of bad things about Torchwood, but she hadn't experienced any major disasters so far. Still, the animosity was clear. Well, as clear as anything dealing with secret organizations is expected to be, so that would be about as clear as a gray object 500 meters across a busy four-lane road in the middle of a downpour and London fog.

Ken sighed; she had been hoping to get permission to stop home and see her little brother, but this "small" UNIT delivery was turning out to take longer than expected. Not only that, but she wasn't sure whether or not she'd be expected to stay and explain the computer protocols associated with the technology she was delivering; really, the instructions were all written out for them.

"Bloody UNIT," Ken grumbled, wrapping her arms around herself a little tighter so as to try to keep warm. Really, if someone could just come and open the door so she could get this over with, she'd be ever-so grateful. At this point, she was contemplating pulling out her mobile - her TETRIS record needed beating.

((PS: Stole the "Bloody UNIT" line from the lady in the TW episode 2x01 who shook her head and went, "Bloody Torchwood."))

There was a technology delivery that was supposed to arrive fifteen minutes ago. Problem was, there was no one at the door to get the delivery. Carys bolted around the corner to the door, taking a moment to readjust herself to that her uniform looked like it was in proper order before opening the door and stepping into the chilly air. The delivery girl was already here.

"Hello! So sorry to keep you waiting. Torchwood delivery, right?" She didn't know much about the tensions between UNIT and Torchwood except for the fact that there were tensions, and it made her a bit curious as to what exactly the delivery was. Carys waved the girl inside with a smile. "So what are you delivering, exactly?" Carys hoped it wasn't anything too weird, she was not qualified to take deliveries really. Just covering for a friend with a hangover. "I'm Carys, by the way."

She snatched up a clipboard beside the door that had delivery information on it and looked to see if there was any more information about the delivery, or some instructions as to what exactly the protocol here was.

Kensington nodded her thanks, sighing with relief as she stepped inside the warm...wherever. "Yeah, that's me," she told the redhead agent who had answered the door. She noticed that said agent looked mildly flustered and was studying a delivery clipboard as if looking for information, as if she wasn't really prepared to take deliveries. That's ok, Ken thought, I'm not really prepared to deliver them.

Out loud, she replied, "Kensington. Er, nice to meet you," she finished lamely, cursing her social inadequacies the moment the sentence had left her mouth. "Um, it's a remote hacking device and transferable software," Ken continued to cover her embarrassment. "Sontaran. It was salvaged from the whole ATMOS debacle, and we've only just got it working to its full capacity. Apparently some clone was using it to keep the NATO missiles from launching before she...it...wanted them to." Ken scratched the back of her neck, a little nervous and shy despite herself. "Um, the instructions are with the delivery, but they sent me to explain the workings in case one of the higher-ups or whoever wanted me to, but I know your higher ups about as well as I know mine - not at all."

Ken clamped her mouth shut, realizing that she'd been rambling a little. This agent seemed nice enough, but Ken still didn't know enough about the tension between Torchwood and UNIT to know whether or not there was some inherent rivalry or enmity that somehow came with both their jobs - like the automatic hatred between Gryffindor and Slytherin or something. The instant that thought crossed her mind, she wanted to kick herself for coming up with that as the best comparison to the situation.

Ken didn't know whether or not she was breaking protocol by trying to make conversation, but the other agent had already introduced herself, and not in the formal "name-and-rank" sort of way, so she figured she'd try; better awkward conversation than awkward-soon-to-be-tense silence. "So, uh, how long have you been with UNIT?" Ken found herself saying, then immediately wanted to kick herself again for asking such a typical question. "Sorry, let me try that again: how are things planetside? I'm up on Torchwood 21, and I'm not always privy to news about what's happening down here." Still probably a very typical, possibly very stupid question, but it was better than the first one.

((PS: I was so bored I made Kensington a delivery outfit. xD))

Hacking device, Sontaran, ATMOS debacle....Carys was following so far. "Alright, I think I got it. You said there's instructions included? The General has his own technical advisor I believe, so I think they can explain it to him. Unless you would rather explain it to him yourself."She filled out a few lines on the delivery sheet as she spoke, hoping it was all the required information.

"No need to apologize, I've been with UNIT for a year now." Carys smiled at Kensington and offered here the clipboard. "Sign by the x? Things are pretty alright planetside right now. Probably won't be that way for long though. Something strange is bound to pop up and cause a near-crisis." It was like clockwork. Carys liked the excitement though, never knowing what was going to cause trouble next.

"Not gonna lie, the Torchwood space station sounds awesome. I probably shouldn't say that though, I think right about now I'm supposed to be delivering some line about you getting your Torchwood ass out of here because you're fouling up our turf. Or something like that." Carys laughed and hung the clipboard on the hook by the door. "Oh well, I suppose we'll just keep my indiscretion quiet. She hadn't been around long enough to know what the rivalry was like exactly, although she assumed it was similar to the rivalry between military branches back in the US. Lots of insults, dirty looks, but in the end it was all harmless. Hopefully.

Kensington shrugged at Carys' inquiry as she scribbled her name by the x. "If the General has his own tech advisor then it shouldn't be a problem...though I'm sure if my boss were here he'd be insisting I accompany the technology until I'm absolutely sure that whoever's in charge of it knows exactly how to use it," she added, rolling her eyes. She looked up at Carys as she handed back the delivery sheet. "A year, huh? I've barely been with Torchwood a few months and they've already sent me back down for a day or two. You'd think they wanted to get rid of me," she quipped without any real disrespect.

Ken raised her eyebrows at Carys' casual assessment of planetside happenings. "Wait, so things are all right, but they get crazy enough that you're that calm about it? Or do you just see enough action at UNIT that it's just same old, same old? As for Torchwood 21, well, I mean, it's cool being in space, but not a ton has happened yet - or at least, not since I've been there. Mostly I lie around looking like an auto mechanic with my legs sticking out from under whatever batch of wires I'm working on," she said, rolling her eyes again.

At Carys' quip about the tension between UNIT and Torchwood, Ken couldn't help but give a little snort of laughter in agreement. "Right - and I probably shouldn't be talking with you because it's 'beneath my station' to talk to some random UNIT soldier," she teased. Ken sighed and shook her head. "It's an age-old trope - two warring factions that absolutely loathe each other and have and will for a good long time. The Montagues and the Capulets, the Hatfields and the McCoys, Gryffindor and Slytherin, and oh look - UNIT and Torchwood. 'Cept we're not fictional." Realizing she was babbling (again), she clamped her mouth shut (again), hoping she hadn't insulted the UNIT agent. Still, Carys didn't seem to bear the uber-hatred for Torchwood that UNIT soldiers were supposedly famous for, and as Kensington didn't harbor the uber-hatred for UNIT soldiers that Torchwood agents were supposedly famous for, she figured the two of them were on even, amiable turf.

"Well, I like the excitement. And I havent had enough lately to satify me." Carys took the sheet back and hung the clipboard back where she had found it. "It's all training flights and running people around on little errands the last few months."

She smikred at Kensington's lament about looking like an auto mechanic. "I'd have thought you'd get more alien action in space. Being in space and all....something about being closer to them. Guess I was wrong." If there wasn't much alien activity the space station must be really boring. Not even a change of scenery to keep things interesting really. "Do you have much contact with people planetside? Or do you guys keep to yourselves?"

Carys laughed. "Except we are supposed to be sort of fictional, I think." Who knew with this crazy universe if Gryffindor and Slytherin weren't entirely fictional. "So who's supposed to be Slytherin in this equation?"

"Training flights?" Kensington asked, interest piqued. "Sounds pretty exciting to me! I've always thought it would be cool to fly, but I'd want to try flying in space. Do you fly from the Valiant, or is that not UNIT property?" She flushed, realizing she was rambling. "Ah, sorry. Too curious for my own good, me."

When Carys commented on thinking that there'd be more action in space, Ken sighed. "Yeah, that's what I thought, too. Instead it's just a lot of computer work. Not that I mind much, I mean, I love seeing what alien tech can do and what I can do with it, though I'm sure a lot of the stuff I try to do with it would get me in trouble," she added in a mutter, rubbing the back of her neck with embarrassment. "Must say, I feel kinda spoiled: the view of Earth from space is gorgeous, but you can only look at it for so long. Zero-G room never gets old though," she said with a grin. "It's supposed to be for some sort of training, but we just grab water guns and have a right laugh - 'specially since water acts funny in zero-g too. But that's still a lot less flying than you get, I guess," she added with a grin, trying not to sound like she was too full of herself or bragging or whatnot.

At Carys' quip, Ken frowned in mock thought. "Hmm...I think it's one of those situations where each side thinks it's Gryffindor and that the other side must be Slytherin because they're so unsophisticated," she joked with exaggeration. Remembering something she'd seen online, she added, "I'd love to take the biggest bigots - heh, now there's some nice alliteration - stick them in a room together, lock the door, then take bets on who comes out alive."

At a loss for what to say next, Ken was saved the need to search when there was a sudden noise - much like the clang of someone tripping over something - from nearby, though she couldn't tell if it was from somewhere outside or inside UNIT itself. "I...don't suppose we're lucky enough for that to be your hungover coworker?" Ken asked, trying to keep the situation light so as not to betray her sudden attack of nerves.

"Yeah, flying is awesome. I've always loved it. One day I'll fly in space. It's just gotta happen. The training flights get repetitive sometimes, so we take bets to keep it entertaining." Carys grinned. "I've never flown from the Valiant, but others have. Not quite sure about UNIT's deal with that. Above my paygrade probably." The alien tech sounded like a load of fun. "What's the use of having alien toys if you can't play with them a little? Especially a zero-g room." Oh, the things she'd try if there were such a room at her disposal....

"Seeing the bigots fight it out would be better than the Thunderdome." Carys enjoyed the scene playing out in her mind for a moment before something crashed outside. She looked out into the hallway, a little suprised by the noise as well. "I'm not quite sure, but I don't think he'll be awake for a while longer." Carys drew her sidearm. "If you have any sort of weapon, I'd get it. Just to be safe." She turned her back on Kensington and edged out into the hall, peering aorund the corner. Her radio suddenly crackled to life and as she tried to muffle it she caught a little bit of the message. "Weevil escaped from holding cell. Engage with caution."

Carys looked back at Kensington with a slight smirk. "Well, here's a bit of that action you were wondering about. Ever had the pleasure of meeting a Weevil?"

When Carys mentioned flying in space, Ken grinned. "Well, if I happen to be working at the viewport and I see you out the window, I'll be sure to wave. Then the Valiant won't matter, right?" she adds with a wink, trying to lighten the girl's spirits. "You can dock at the station and we'll have a water gun fight in the zero-g room. Can't say if that or the 'bigot fight' is better than the Thunderdome, 'cause I've never been. Now that I can actually afford it, I really ought to go." She blushed. "Sorry, er, rambling again."

The crash and the crackle of information over Carys's radio made Ken tense in high alert she didn't think she could achieve. Then again, this was her first alien encounter ever, and suddenly all the stories she'd heard and advice she'd been given seemed strangely worthless in the situation. Even as Carys was asking her if she'd encountered a Weevil, Ken had pulled out her mobile, remotely accessed the Torchwood database (which she really wasn't supposed to be able to do), and was looking up Weevils. Quickly reading what information she could, Ken grimaced, stashing her mobile and pulling out her more-powerful-than-was-necessarily-legal taser.

"I will have now," she said in response to Carys's question. Recalling what she'd read, she asked, "Don't suppose there's such a thing as undead we could use to subdue him? No, too much to hope for. And yet we get aliens. Oh, cruel irony," she muttered before immediately shutting up. She gave Carys a "what do we do?" look, hating that she felt so helpless. Then again, she hadn't been expecting any action, and neither had the people who sent her on this mission. She wondered, then, not whether or not she was going to get eaten, but what the hell she was going to put in her report.

"Sounds like a plan." Carys shook her head. "And you don't need to apologize for rambling. It's fine, really." She actually didn't think Kensington was rambling at all.

She nodded in approval when Kensington pulled out what appeared to be a taser. Hopefully they worked on Weevils. Carys turned the volume on her radio way down, then pulled it from her belt. "This is Barton. Possible sighting on South Side near civilian entrance. Pursuing with caution." Well, her version of caution which wasn't entirely cautious. "Nope, I'm afraid I'm still on life number one." Carys thought for a moment, then motioned Kensington over. "Alright, stay behind me." She moved out into the hallway, keeping her back to the wall, and slowly made her way towards where she had heard the crash. A small crate had been knocked over, probably by the Weevil.

Carys was trying to think up an actual plan for detaining this thing. This hallway branched off into a dead end on the right side and the mess hall on the left. "So, say we corner this thing. Have any ideas on what we should do? They're pretty vicious." If they could lock it somewhere, that would be perfect. There was a conference room off the right hallway with a solid door, and there were several doors along the hallway that were supposed to withstand a bombing. They were controlled from the security center though.

Kensington chewed her lip as she scrolled through all the info pertaining to Weevils that her phone could transmit to her, though she was paying attention to Carys's words as well. She was beginning to formulate a plan, but things weren't looking so good for aforementioned phone. She looked at the battered piece of technology and sighed. "'Bout time I got a new one anyway," she muttered before looking over at Carys so she could explain herself.

"Well, Weevils are basically animals, right? So they - theoretically, I mean - can hear really high-pitched sounds the way dogs can." As she spoke, Ken fumbled in her shoulder bag for one of her smallest screwdrivers out of her kit, finally locating it and prying the back of her mobile off. "With a little work I can short-circuit part of my phone so it emits one of those sounds - too high for us to hear, but really annoying for a Weevil or a dog or a bat or anything else that hears that high. Then maybe while it's...annoyed, I guess, or distracted, or whatever, you can tase it? Or maybe we could use the sound to push it somewhere we can lock it in?" She bit her lip again as she continued to fiddle with her phone, shrugging as she continued, "Of course, if it doesn't work, I will have irreparably damaged my phone, but hey, it was getting pretty Frankenstein-ian anyway."

After a little more meddling, Kensington had finished her makeshift Weevil-annoyer, activated by one single loose wire that could be touched to a certain point near the speaker. Shoving her tinkering equipment back into her bag, she held her taser in one hand and her mobile in the other as she mimicked Carys and flattened herself against the wall. Only then realizing how presumptuous she'd been, assuming that Carys would just automatically accept her idea, Ken blushed crimson, deeply embarrassed. "Well, uh, that's my idea, anyway. If you need me, I'm right behind you," she said, giving the UNIT agent a double thumbs up and a nervous smile.

Carys chewed on her bottom lip as she listened to Kensingtons plan. It could very well work. "What if the Weevil decides to attack the source of the annoyance instead of running away from it?" It was something she needed to plan for. "You know what? Screw it. I like the plan either way. Depending on how it reacts I can either lock it in the mess hall or in the conference room. Then tase it if I can get close enough?" It was crazy enough that it could work. "Unless of course you want to be the one to tase it." Either was was fine with her. She'd shoot the thing if the plan went south.

"I think it's in the left hallway right now." Carys peeked around the corner slowly to try and see it. Sure enough, it was there. For the moment it was standing still, like it was waiting for something. Carys turned back around to Kensington. "So, how are we going to work this? She didn't bother trying to hide her little smirk. This was the action for the day, and action was always exciting. Besides, even Kensington had said she wanted to see some action. There was also the small amount of bragging rights they'd earn if they caught this thing without any outside help, and Carys did love collecting her bragging rights too...

((Forgive me for the insane delay- school intervened))

Kensington frowned; she hadn't thought about the possibility of the Weevil attacking instead of running. Biting her lip - again - she once more pulled out one of her tools and fiddled with her mobile, cranking up the intensity and frequency on her makeshift noisemaker. "Well, hopefully it'll be in too much pain to want to do anything but run, but if that's the case, let's hope I can sprint faster than it can." She cursed the quiver in her voice when she said the last bit, but it wasn't exactly something she could help - she was, she was willing to admit to herself, more than a little freaked out.

When Carys asked which one of them should be the one to tase it, Ken quite willingly handed over her weapon. "Be my guest," she said with a shaky smile. "I haven't exactly had any combat training yet, but it's the first thing I'm gonna start when I get back." Carys seemed way more confident in this situation than she was, so Ken was more than happy to let her lead. Besides, it was her base, after all. When the UNIT agent asked her opinion as to how they would execute their plan, Ken thought for a moment. "Considering that you probably know this place backwards while I don't know a friggin' thing, you'd be the one better suited to try and hole it up in the mess hall or wherever. I..." (she hated to say it, but,) "...I can go in first with the distraction, to make sure it works, and then if it does, you can corner it? Though, if you want to go first, I'm perfectly ok with that."

Carys thought for a moment. "You just focus on the running and I'll make sure it doesn't get you, alright?" She really shouldn't be putting someone with no combat training into this situation.

"Alright. You go first and get it to the mess hall, I'll make sure it doesn't change direction or get too close to you. As soon as it's inside, you lock the door and I'll tazer it." Carys really, really hoped that the tazer was strong enough for the Weevil. "If it attacks, give me the phone and take your first right down the other hallway and lock yourself in the conference room and I'll take it from there."

Carys took Kensington's tazer. "Are you ready for this?" Because this was when the job actually got dangerous. "Don't worry, I've got your back. I won't let it get you." Carys promised. Although she really wanted to catch the weevil, protecting Kensington would take priority.

She checked the taser once, then nodded at Kensington. "Ready to roll whenever you are."

Kensington took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to prepare herself. They could play the "Are you ready?/After you" game all day, but the Weevil could find them by then and...did Weevils eat people? She probably should've looked for that detail before irreparably destroying her mobile. Oh well. Said mobile in hand, she crouched like a runner at the starting line.

"Which way is the mess hall?" she whispered. When Carys pointed out the route, Ken nodded, took another deep breath, and bolted, connecting the wire that would set off her makeshift Weevil-whistle.

All Ken could hear was a slight buzz from her phone, but it must've sounded a lot worse to the Weevil, because a pained screech came reverberating off the walls from down the hall. Slightly emboldened, Kensington ran in the direction of the noise, hoping she'd be able to chase the creature as planned. When she turned a corner and actually saw the Weevil, she almost tripped in shock. Seeing a picture of it was one thing, but seeing the Planet of the Apes reject up close was something else entirely. Making a face despite herself, Ken bravely held her phone forward and watched as the Weevil cringed and lumbered away from her. Ken followed, herding it towards the mess hall.

She had almost gotten the Weevil through the mess hall door when everything went wrong. "Ow! Dammit!" Ken hissed as her phone erupted in sparks, several of which landing on her skin. One final electric shock jolted the phone from her hand and onto the floor, where it shattered. Ken swore four kinds of sideways. A hundred feet! she thought. The stupid thing couldn't have lasted another hundred feet?!

The Weevil ran a few more steps before skidding to a stop, as if it took it a second to realize that the noise had stopped. After another second of confusion, it whirled around to stare straight at Ken, primitive eyes blazing in anger. Kensington could only stare back, wide-eyed and frozen. Now what?!?
