It was a day after his return to Torchwood and Owen was back to normal. Well, pretty much. Things were still a little crazy for him and he found himself lost in his own thoughts a lot. Way more than when he first arrived at Torchwood all those years ago...he could barely remember when he had arrived...it felt like a whole lifetime. Rift alert, SUV, chasey chasey, catch the weevil and bring it back. Not to mention the admin that came afterwards.

Then there were the dead bodies of humans or aliens, they were always interesting. And today was no different. He had hoped for a quiet first technical day back into Torchwood, but no, random dead alien...crazy stuff. So he was there in the autopsy room, almost the same as it had always been, only cleaner. Which was a plus.

He then sat down in his chair and took off his gloves, putting them in the basket. He rolled his chair over to the side where his computer was and started typing away, inputting his findings and holding his pen between his teeth; a normal gesture for him. He became thoughtful again as he wondered whether he should confront Toshiko...they hadn't really talked much. Not properly, anyway.

Some things before, well, they died were left in the air...there was that date thing he'd asked her on that they never got to have. There was her feelings for him. There was his feelings....all mixed up. To be honest, he hadn't given Toshiko enough attention. Not the amount she deserved. He and Jack pissed each other off, and the same sort of relationship was held between him and Ianto, and definitely him and Gwen. Thinking about her feelings...he wondered how long she had had them? If it was long...he couldn't imagine how hard it was watching him and Gwen...ok, don't go there. And then there was DIane....stop. And of course all the women in between...

He sat back in his chair, having stopped typing. He was staring off into nowhere. Well that was shit. For her, anyway. He remembered his feelings knowing, well, thinking that Toshiko was dead...even though he hadn't stayed long enough to find out she was alive too. It had been...hard to deal with. But he couldn't pinpoint what he felt for her. He had always felt an overprotectiveness about her, even if he didn't show it. But...

Death in one word 'Nothingness'. Maybe the dark -black void would have been different. Maybe if the universe knew it was her time to die that she'd be in heaven with parents. But she didn't see them, she didn't see anything and she felt nothing. She could remember hearing Owen screaming about dying and the pain from bleeding out. None of it went away, how she wished it would have gone away.

Toshiko sat in her new apartment, on her new bed which needed sheets. She had been a live for a few days now and had seen the new Torchwood, but left soon after she saw it. Jack had found her location yesterday after Owen had returned. He wondered if Jack told Owen about her death, she hadn't let on to anything being wrong, it didn't matter about her at that moment. Tosh didn't get dressed up like she normally did, mostly just incase Owen noticed her. Tosh never really thought of her self pretty, but even with out the skirt and her hair pulled back she was actually very pretty in her own way.

She wasn't sure whether to be happy or upset that she was brought back. After all they couldn't live forever and one day she'd have to watch or hear Owen die. For the first time tosh wore jeans to work instead of a skirt, a bare of black heels and a loose fitting shirt. She didn't care about having a jacket, though she knew it could get cold inside the hub it didn't matter. She didn't even bother to pull her hair back. Some seemed to like it when Tosh didn't have her hair back, which was mostly every day before she had died.

It didn't seem like a long time between her apartment and Torchwood 3. The sound of the alarm going off as the door rolled to the side to let her in. The door closing behind her, the smell, just seemed familiar and she suddenly felt at home as she stood there with one hand on her purse strap. Moving towards her space, she noticed Owen in his work space below her area. She looked at him for a moment and gave a warm smile, which faded fast before she turned to her work area. Tosh did the opposite of what she wanted to. She wanted to just walk down the steps and just kiss him or hug him tight and just break down. Tosh didn't want Owen to see her that way and so she stared at the black monitor as she put down her purse and computer back on the floor. this is just a normal day of work she told her self before logging into the computer.

Owen looked up as Toshiko entered the hub, the tell tale sound of the alarm and the noise of the large and very heavy door opening. It reminded him of the time with Lisa, how Tosh had to get that thing opened manually. But then, danger and fear will give you that sort of strength to pull through, right?

He wondered vaguely whether she would come down to say hello. He was in such a state of thought that he hadn't moved from his spot to greet her. He then stood up, figuring he should talk to her. He knew her feelings for him and how they had left things...she wasn't the most outgoing or confident of people so he knew she would probably feel a little uneasy and unsure.

He put his pen into his pocket and walked up the stairs into the main area, standing in the archway for a moment as he stopped to stare at the back of her head for a moment. She was really there...really alive. Gwen's words weren't a lie to get him to come back...not that he'd ever disbelieve her words and think she was being deceptive. These were just those thoughts that....

Oh God. They were thoughts normal mushy idiots had. Blergh. What the hell was wrong with him?

He rubbed his temples, trying to get rid of the goo. He left the archway and walked forwards, so that he came steps away from Toshiko. "Tosh..." Owen said.

She was glad to be alive, but beng in the darkness for what felt like decades made her do some hard thinking. Tosh had always liked Owen and the entire ordeal of dying and coming back to life should have made her more courageous. Tosh should have just walked in , paused and then just jumped Owen. Yet, clearly that wasn't what happened. As much as she loved the man, she didn't think she could go through with watching or listening to him die again. The thing was , their job was dangerous and she never had the best luck with men.

Owen was very important to her and any office romance might compromise their way of thinking. Then again, Tosh was a professional. She heard Owen's footstep, but as they grew closer she went back to working on the computer. It was weird, right? It couldn't just be her? There was a reason why they were back, someone had to have done this. She was dead, she should have remained dead, he should have been dead. The best way for Tosh to appear as if nothing was bothering her was to act as if they never had died. Tosh knew she needed to keep up the rouse, she was a big girl that could handle her own problems. Tosh would in fact need to break down to get over everything or it would mess with her head.

Tosh could see Owen's reflection in the monitor. "Yes Owen?" Again, that was not what she wanted to do. In fact the image of her turning around, saying his name and just kissing him came to mind. No, Tosh wouldn't do it. Maybe she was being stubborn, but it was for a good reason, she didn't want to have her heart broken again. Her eyes closed as she remembered listening to him yell during those final moments. A tear dropped from her eye as the emotions came back over her. She ran her hand across her face removing the tear before Owen would notice.

Owen watched her for a moment; she was just as he remembered her. A bit geeky, working hard and being very withdrawn. Her reply came to no surprise, and yet it did. He didn't know what he expected: half expected her to show more emotion at such a reunion and yet he knew Tosh was a professional woman and would rarely put personal feelings first in a work environment.

Owen fixed his face and walked forward, putting his hand onto her desk, leaning over a little, though not too close to her. "...Just in time," he muttered. "We found a dead alien a few streets away, dead, just trying to find out the how's and the why's. Can you get me any stats?"

That was natural. As if nothing had happened. Probably for the best. It wasn't the easiest of things to think of. Death was terrible. He'd experienced it twice and he really didn't know why he carried on here. But like the others said: what else did he have?

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

Maybe one day he would take her out, but maybe when he wasn't feeling so mixed up.

"Yes, just give me a second" It was just like normal, well sort of. The only reason she was back at torchwood was because she knew no other life. She hadn't had a normal job in a long time and her memory of Torchwood, of Gwen and Ianto, Jack, and of course Owen would disappear and Tosh knew deep down she couldn't just leave them even if it was going to be difficult to feel as if things were back to normal. Tosh wondered where the others were, missed hearing that flirtation in Ianto's voice when talking to or about Jack.

Jack and Ianto had each other, Gween and Rhys, and even though they were not a couple, she knew Owen would be there for her if she needed him. A slight smile came on to her lips with that thought as her fingers ran across the keys. She got a hold of street cameras, noticed a camera outside a shop in the alleyway which the alien had been found. "Do we have the footage from the camera outside the bakery?" She asked before the picture of the alien popped up on her screen.

She started to search through their database, the images running fast on the screen till it stopped. "Well it's not in the database" She went back to searching for news stories and social media sites if anyone had seen anything strange. Then from there she'd pull up the near by areas, find cameras she could hack into, and try to find video of this thing to figure out it's story. Moving over to another screen she pulled up the picture of the corpse and zoomed in. "Where's the body now?" Tosh's eyes ran over the picture one more time before one of her searches pulled up an image on a random site. "There was another one of them in Nevada in the United States.Though it claims to be an elaborate costume"

Owen watched her type away. He wondered how Torchwood managed without her. Owen himself had some grasp on the tech and the computers, but he was a right dunce in comparison to Toshiko. He studied the screen with interest. "I haven't gotten around to surveying much on the surveillance side; been too busy determining the cause of death. It has a few markings on the sides of its head, as well as a few here and there on its body," Owen relayed. "But its skin hasn't been penetrated, so it's a tricky bugger."

"I've got it on the autopsy table, I've been cross-referencing it with our database, for previous deaths like it, so far nothing," Owen said, straightening up and returning to the autopsy room before coming back with his laptop, placing it down onto a free part of her desk and bringing up the cameras he had placed around the body. He pointed to the markings.

"Nevada? Bloody hell, if these things are in the US too, and they're coming through the rift, then is the rift expanding or something?" Owen muttered, typing into his computer. "Of course, it could have gone by plane..." He said this sarcastically.

She laughed slightly at his comment by plane. "You never know, it could have done just that" She smiled running her fingers through her hair before turning her head back to look toward Owen for a moment. Once more her eyes were on the screen. "There isn't really much about it, says he was found dead 'we iterate it's just a guy in a costume' They even posted a picture of who they claim it really was on an autopsy table" She moved away from her computer and toward Owen, but moved passed him to the table where the creature lay.

Even in death, some creatures just looked mean. " I don't think this creature did anyone harm. The last time a creature died it was because of a virus and before that because it was manufactured." Her eyes moved across the corpse and in that moment she wanted to cry. She could fool most of the others, or well think she could fool them, but she really wasn't alright. When someone dies they just shouldn't come back. Not that she wasn't grateful to be back.

Tosh wondered if this was something along the lines that Owen felt the first time he died. She of course was not going to bring it up. "When will the others be getting back?" A few minutes after she asked the question her computer beeped, which made her turn her head toward Owen for a moment then to her screen.

Owen snorted, casting a little smile, though hidden with sarcastic humour. "Who knows? Bloody airport control is too busy arsing around with smugglers, to the extent that stupid little things like snowglobes are suspected. Random alien? Of course, that won't be harmful at all. It's the soddin' snowglobes that'll do the damage," Owen scoffed. He remembered being pulled aside for something as daft as perfume one time when he and Katie had returned from France. Of course, having buried a lot of those memories, he couldn't remember what exactly.

"Makes our jobs much easier. Not that we have jurisdiction over the US, like, but we don't need civilians running around screaming about some alien," Owen said, rubbing his head. He followed her down to where the body was. "I checked its fingers and toes, even the hands and feet. Neither give DNA from anything other than itself, so it's clean."

"Makes a change, dealing with a potentially innocent alien, pity it was one to die," Owen said, keeping his eyes to the corpse. Death was a delicate subject and he imagined it was for Toshiko too.

"Jack and Ianto are investigating the scene, or were, until there was some more activity. I'm on standby; they'll call us if they need us, it's not too far from here," Owen replied.

"What about it's genes? Any mutation or noticeable dna from multiple known species?" Sometimes she wondered what the team would do with out Owen. She knew some small things about medicine, but Owen was more than just a doctor who gave out medicine.

Tosh could feel Owen standing behind her and she wanted to let her eyes close. More importantly she wanted to lean back into him, but this was work and she wasn't going to do that. Instead she moved to look at the creatures toes. "Are we sure it's dead, I mean isn't it plausible that a creature go into hibernation, stopping it's heart, but maybe not it's brain activity" The thing looked dead, but there was still color to the corpse too much color in Tosh's opinion.

Tosh turned around and moved toward Owen, who was blocking her way out. She could just turn around and walk around the table, but she didn't want to do. "I should check my computer" The beeping had stopped, but a notice was flashing across the screen. When Tosh realized she had stared a little too long into Owen's eyes, she lowered her head as she waited for him to let her pass by.

Owen checked through his computer with a look of concentration, making a small noise to go with it. "From our sources, it's nothing we've seen before, although I haven't checked UNIT's database, but I'm sure you'll have no trouble with that?" Owen smirked, remembering her hacking abilities; far superior to any of the rest of theirs.

"Woman after my own heart; I was thinking something strange was going on. The heart's stopped, but the brain's not showing any signal either. But the skin colour seems a little too warm. It even feels normal, not cold like the others," Owen said.

Owen found himself looking down into Toshiko's eyes and he was vaguely aware he was blocking the way. But he was just standing there, transfixed. He saw her lower her head and shook his own, putting his hands lightly on her arms and turning a little to let her by. "Sorry," Owen said vaguely, watching her return to her computer before following her back up too.

He stood behind her, arms crossed, watching her work. "Anything you could do to perhaps get us a better fix on its brainwaves? What I currently have's got nothing," Owen said.

Tosh waited till she got around Owen to smile. She couldn't help but smile whole heartedly to Owen's words 'woman after my own heart'. Though the smile might have come off to Owen as an awkward smile, because she was trying to hide it from Owen's sight.

" Just give me a few minutes" She typed on her computer only to turn around to see Owen doing what he normally did hovering. Tosh simply gave him a look, hoping he'd understand that she needed him out of her bubble space. Tosh was never good with confrontation, she hated being rude, giving the look was the easiest and fastest thing she could come up with.

It was when she started to type again something came to mind, but it was sort of in humane. "If this thing is truly dead, you'd do an autopsy maybe even take out it's heart. No thing can survive with out it's heart. But if it's alive and you take out the heart" She turned around slowly. "well that would be a bad thing" She stood there silently and just sort of stared at Owen, well right through Owen. " Forget I brought that up, that was stupid of me to even say" She turned around with a tired some look now on her face. She was off her game since she got back and she probably would be till she resolved some of her own personal things.

Owen moved out of the way, moving to his workspace not far from hers. He tapped the top of the desk thinking, while Toshiko did her search. He looked up as she started speaking. He shook his head. "You do have a point, but can't risk it actually being alive...we need to either find another way to check for signs of life or just leave it a while. I can keep an eye on the CCTV from here, in case it wakes or something when it thinks no one's looking..." Owen rambled.

He brought up the CCTV footage on one of his monitors while using his main monitor to help gather some information, not that he was in any way as good as Tosh at this sort of thing, but he had to try. After about five minutes, he looked up. "Found anything?" Owen asked, checking the footage and noting no change. He tried to scan for anything, but no readings.

He sat back in his chair and signed a little. This was getting a little dull; not that he would stop now. Once he started a job, he would get it done.
