In RP there are several concepts that are just a complete and utter no-no. Below they are explained in a very thorough manner. You must accept and follow these guidelines in order to roleplay properly.

Mary Sue
A Mary Sue is a character who perfect to the fullest extent. For example...

Mary Sue is a great shot with any type of weapon. She's a straight-A student and is an excellent driver. Her father is rich but she is not spoiled and knows how to work hard. She is a great farmer, but also a great cook, carpenter, pilot, and swimmer. She is on the varsity Soccer, Football, Tennis, Basketball, and Hockey teams, and due to her amazing organization skills, she can fit these all into her schedule. She's one of the best spellers in the state and has come first place in the Nation Chess tournament twice. She's also an excellent jockey.

Now, basically, the best way to avoid this is give your character a disadvantage. And not just something insignificant like "She can't play violin". More like "She is not much of an athlete," or "She was never the most logical of people,"

And finally - You can't just say they have this disadvantage and not role play it. If your character has a devastating fear of heights and someone invites her to go skydiving in one of your threads, then she would logically refuse...Get it?

Godmoding
Godmoding is when you control a character or an action that is not in your characters control.

For example;
"John took the .22 Rifle and aimed it at Bob. He fired. The shot slammed into Bob's shoulder and sent him flying into the wall."

Now, John here is controlling Bob. It is up to Bob to choose whether or not the shot found its mark. However, he as well cannot be so unfair as to dodge everything like someone form the Matrix. That would also be a form of Godmoding.

Another form of harder-to-recognize Godmoding is when something like this happens:
"John raises the gun point blank to Jimmy's hand and fires,"
Now, John didn't exactly say that the shot hit, but there is absolutely no way Jimmy could dodge that without being ridiculous. So basically John Godmoded.

A good action would be;
"John scrambled for the revolver on the table and took several shots at Jimmy"

No controlling - No definite hits - A chance for Jimmy to dodge.

Doing the Impossible
Doing the impossible is a common mistake amongst novice roleplayers. It is comparable to godmoding but is not completely so.

The following would be an example of DTI (Doing the Impossible):
"Jimmy stared down the twenty foot drop that the cliff gave way to. He saw the approaching mutant bear charging towards him. He took a deep breath and jumped. he landed cat-like on the ground twenty feet below, completely unharmed."

Now, you see the obvious flaw. How the hell could he do that? Even when there is no forum member that is a direct victim, it is still illegal. And excuses like "But Jimmy had really shock-absorbing shoes!" are not okay nor accepted.

Proper Grammar
Proper Grammar is incredibly important when it comes to enjoying roleplay. It's a matter of a clean, well thought out appearance. Posts like

"jon wnt 2 teh store n bawt sum food" just look terrible. Even something like

"John wnt to the stoar and bought sum food," is bad. It just comes to show that the writer isn't willing to put effort in his post.

Even still, a post like "John went to the store and bought some food," is bad. Where did he get the money? Which store? Where? What kind of food? What was it like? Was the walk to and from the store eventful? How come it's only 9 words long?

A good post would be "John took five minutes out of his relatively pleasant evening to go to the local food depot, where a small fellow named Uri sold exceptional bread. He was extremely careful as he made the walk towards the store, for he was aware of the neighborhood's violent reputation. His hunting knife was firmly attached to his belt in case a wandering gang found him to be an appealing target,"
