For the last several generations, mutations within the gene pool have begun to evolve and extraordinary powers and abilities have developed within teenagers especially. The sheer volume of cases being reported sky-rocketed almost overnight and sent many of the confused teenagers over the edge. What had once been a loving family and a stable home were no more. The stress of being disowned and forced to fend for themselves only served to enhance most of the latent abilities within the teens. Some of those ended up in the wrong crowd, but the lucky ones were discovered by two saviours.

Recognising the revolution within evolution, Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, both mutants themselves, set up a sanctuary in which any mutant teenager could call home. Using his own personal fortune, Xavier helped to develop not only a haven for the frightened and vulnerable, but also a community. New friendships were forged among the children. The mansion quickly became much more. It evolved itself into a school and a source of education on the use of mutant gifts.

For several more years, Xavier and Lehnsherr used a device dubbed Cerebro to seek out and new mutants. Each received the same gracious invitation to join the existing students at the thriving school. Enrolment became so popular that Xavier was convinced that a second school bearing his name had to be opened. This new school, under the stewardship of Lehnsherr was opened in California. The two old friends remained in close contact, but were free to run each school independently as they saw fit to do so.

In Washington DC, a movement was begun to investigate the increased reports of extraordinary powers and abilities among the younger generation. Hearing after hearing was held and a decision was debated and discussed behind closed doors. Certain people, not content to wait for any official statement or ruling, took matters into their own hands. These gangs called themselves The Friends of Humanity and began to sweep the streets. For weeks they performed random inquisitions until they identified their first mutant. The unfortunate woman was paraded through the streets, then tried in a drumhead trial, found guilty of being a mutant and executed.

News of the death sent shockwaves around America and opinion was evenly split. The Friends of Humanity and similar thinking people rejoiced at the striking of the first blow, and vowed to eradicate the entire mutant populace. In New York, Xavier and the residents of the school were appalled at the latest series of events. A curfew was placed upon the more junior members of the mansion and even senior members were forbidden to venture out alone and never after dark.

In California, Lehnsherr watched in equal horror; and was even more appalled to learn that the identity of the victim was none other than Magda Lehnsherr. An enraged Lehsnherr vowed to gain revenge on the human race. He abandoned the Annexe and fled. No one, not even Xavier, could locate him. Moira McTaggert, a long time friend of the pair, was sent to oversee the Californian venue. When she arrived, she discovered that Lehnsherr was not the only missing. The entire compliment of the students had vanished as well.
