Mutations: Earth manipulation [Terrakinesis]
Rufus’s Terrakinesis allows him to control the classic earth element. His power could allow him to raise large sections of the earth at a time, cracking the earth and raising it, either with him standing on it, or within a few hundred yards if he’s on a separate spot at the time. His mutation also includes raising lava and bending it to his own will, though he rarely uses the mutation as he finds it difficult to keep under control of once he begins.
Weaknesses in mutations: As already said, he cannot control the lava for too long. It drains quite a lot of his energy and leaves him weak. If he ever attempts to do this, it is only ever in the most needed situation. When it comes to raising the ground itself, his mutation stretches at a maximum of twenty five metres below the earth he’s stood on. When he has to raise this earth without him being stood on it, he can only raise it this high in the air, also, with the lowest point of the earth being twenty five metres above him. The radius of the earth he can raise is usually in a circle, stretching out twenty five metres in any direction, as it is with the depth. The reason Rufus is a Recruiter is mainly because he asked to be in that position. He does enjoy a fight every so often, though doesn’t believe in himself to be able to use him mutation comfortably.

[ T H E L O O K ]
Portrayal by: Gale Harold
Overall appearance: Rufus is around six foot tall, and has always been pretty tall for his age. He was always taller than his sisters, though he didn’t gain very much weight when he was young, so he used to look like a stick. Though now he is a little bigger and he actually looks human. His hair is dark brown, straight and usually accompanied by a light beard underneath his chin. He usually wears either short-sleeved shirts or long-sleeved and rolls up the arms. He doesn’t really like his firearms being covered up, for some off reason. Then he usually wears dark jeans; either black or dark blue.

Personality: Rufus isn’t the usual type of guy most people would assume all boys his age were. He will bother listening if you have something to talk to him about. He won’t ignore you if he can help it. He’s not the type to bear a grudge against someone for longer than an hour or so. And he usually apologises even if it wasn’t him who did anything. Whenever he had the chance to do something for someone he’ll do it. He enjoys helping people, talking to people, laughing with people, though not laughing at people. Rufus is altogether a people person; though he can never manage to have a full conversation with a male.

But Rufus could turn easily if you got on the wrong side of him. He can quickly turn and the next thing you know he could be charging at you and swearing loudly. He’s loud and aggressive when he’s speaking with someone he doesn’t like, or someone who doesn’t like him, and he will even use his mutation if he’s provoked enough. When it comes to women, Rufus is an extremely flirtatious. He usually starts hitting on any woman who comes his way, as long as he likes them.

All-in-all, he’s an extremely complicated person.

[ H I S T O R I E S ]
After a long and tiring visit to the hospital in the middle of June, Josephine and Harold returned to their home in Ontario, happy to have a little boy around the house. Having had two girls previously, they thought it would’ve been nice to have a boy around as well. They saw that as he grew he surprisingly enjoyed the sandbox outside more than either of his sisters ever had. Every so often, Harold even thought that he had seen the sand move when no one had touched it, but he disregarded it and blamed it on the lack of sleep he was getting due to his busy job and Rufus waking in the middle of the night.

A few years after he’d started school, now aged nine, Rufus was in gym class, attempting to climb one of the ropes, extremely unsuccessfully. A lot of the children were actually laughing at him and he just lost it, what with his short temper. The ground began to shake beneath their feet and a huge crack appeared through the centre of the gym. As Rufus began to panic, the earthquake seemed to die down as he jumped down from the rope and stood staring at the huge crack in the floor. As he spoke about it at lunch time to the people he sat with, who had been in other lessons at the time, they said they hadn’t felt anything like an earthquake. As they walked to their next lesson, Rufus was walking outside toward the gym and he saw that the ground beneath it had actually risen a foot above the rest of the ground. Thinking of it to be nothing but a natural phenomenon, Rufus didn’t bother really telling his parents.

A few weeks later, Rufus encountered a similar incident. He was on a coach headed on a school field trip for the day when a few kids from the back were throwing food and paper balls at him. He didn’t start yelling or anything and instead held his anger. Though there was an earthquake similar to that from before and the entire bus began to shake. The bus had stopped at a set of traffic lights and as everyone looked outside, they saw other people sat calmly in their cars. No one had any idea what was going on, but they all ran out of the bus in a hurry.

He then started to talk to his sisters about it, because he knew he could trust them: he didn’t choose one to talk to first and then the other, as he trusted them both equally. He trusted them because he was afraid to tell his parents, though they were older than most people he knew, so he assumed they would know what to do. They had both heard about mutants from the news, though neither of them knew what to do. They advised him to tell their parents, but he was too afraid to do so. So he had asked his sisters to instead. They did as he asked and his parents both talked to him about the situation he was in. Their friends knew of a place where children like Rufus were welcomed and safe from the Bounty Hunters which were due to be introduced into Canada soon.

Deciding it would be best to protect him from these people rather than keep him at home where he could be found; Josephine and Harold sent him off to the Pryde Institute at the age of eleven, after receiving a letter replying to their query about their son’s safety, though they couldn’t go with him. They had little money as it was and couldn’t afford to send the entire family to a new home in another country altogether. Eventually making it to New York, he followed the instructions to find the Institute and was met outside its large gates by someone who he thought was a teacher at the school. Though they said that the place was filled with Hunters looking for mutants and said he could be safe elsewhere. The person took him to the ‘Allerdyce Manor,’ which was apparently a place for people with potential like him.

He soon learnt about the ‘Brotherhood’ and the ‘X-men,’ but the woman who had found him didn’t lie to him. She told him all he needed to know about the two factions and that eventually he would be able to control his ‘powers’. He actually liked the idea of being able to control this mutation of his and he stayed in the Manor for the next eight years following; still living with the Brotherhood and still learning to use his mutation to its fullest.
