Hunted to near extinction in western Europe during the middle ages, these dragons placed themselves into retreat, abandoning their lairs for the sake of self preservation. The vast majority fled from Europe, taking up residence in North America, particularly the northern regions of the United States and Canada, though a few remained behind in Ireland and Scotland, the lands that retained the strongest bond to the old Celtic ways. They were loathe to abandon their treasure troves, but knew it had to be done. Some dragons took this better than others, and have remained benevolent creatures who are content to rest and protect their territories, while others have become sinister, cruel creatures with little compassion for mortals beyond what they can gain from them.

Some have been spotted from time to time over the centuries of their concealment, dubbed lake monsters and treated as urban legend. Cases such as the dragons of Loch Ness, Lake Champlain, and Lake Okanagan have become popularized and well known, moreso within the last few decades before the impact of Revelations. These dragons were assigned as the Watchers when their kind went into hiding, they were to determine the time when the dragons would be able to return to the world at large. Each of the Watchers is an elder dragon, and each of their lake homes contains a full cluster, making the regions quite dangerous for would-be dragon hunters.

Dragon traits
The following traits are shared for all dragons.
  • Amphibious (Ex): Dragons can breathe indefinately under water and suffer no penalties when doing so. However, a dragon cannot use their breath weapon while submerged, should one attempt to do so, the result is a patch of boiling water the size of the area affected by the breath weapon that causes 1d6 points of fire damage per round of submersion to creatures who are not immune to fire.
  • Frightful Presence (Ex): A young adult or older dragon’s very presence unsettling to foes. It takes effect automatically when the creature performs some sort of dramatic action (such as charging, attacking, or snarling). Opponents within range who witness the action may become frightened or shaken. The range is 30-ft. for a young adult, 60-ft. for an adult, and 90-ft. for an elder, and the duration is 5d6 rounds. This ability affects only opponents with fewer Hit Dice or levels than the dragon has.
An affected opponent can resist the effects with a successful Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 frightful creature’s racial HD + frightful creature’s Cha modifier). An opponent that succeeds on the saving throw is immune to that dragon’s frightful presence for 24 hours. Frightful presence is a mind-affecting fear effect.
  • Swallow Whole (Ex): If a dragon of adult age or older begins its turn with an opponent held in its mouth (see Improved Grab), it can attempt a new grapple check (as though attempting to pin the opponent). If it succeeds, it swallows its prey, and the opponent takes bite damage. A swallowed creature is subjected to the natural internal furnace of the dragon's stomach, and suffers one half of the dragon's breath weapon damage each round. A swallowed creature is considered to be grappled, while the creature that did the swallowing is not. A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon (the amount of cutting damage required to get free is noted in the creature description), or it can just try to escape the grapple. The Armor Class of the interior of a dragon that swallows whole is 10 + 1/2 its natural armor bonus, with no modifiers for size or Dexterity. If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, success puts it back in the attacker’s mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again.

Appearing similar to the hatchlings, young adult dragons possess small horns sprouting from the backs of their heads, and are roughly the size of a clydsedale horse. Young adult dragons weigh roughly 1,300 pounds and are 20-ft. long from nose to tail.
Dragons from 20 years of age up to 100 years of age are young adults.
Young adult dragons speak Draconic fluently and will often taunt their foes in battle, though due to the nature of the language most would perceive it as feral growling and roars. Young adults seldom communicate with non-dragons in any other circumstance, deeming them unworthy.

Combat:
Young adult dragons prefer to fight on the wing, using hit and run tactics to wear down stronger foes, but retain the predatory instinct of their younger days. They are not above using the same overwhelming tactics as displayed by hatchlings.
  • Breath Weapon (Ex): A young adult's breath weapon deals 6d10 points of fire damage in a 40-ft. cone. The Reflex save DC is 20.
  • Improved Grab (Ex): A young adult that hits an opponent of Medium-size or smaller with two claw attacks in the same round may attempt to start a grapple as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity, dealing bite damage automatically each round the grapple is maintained.

Treasure: Standard

Larger yet than the young adult, an adult dragon towers over some houses, standing 12-ft. at the shoulders. Its wings are fully developed and span twice its body length, and its horns have grown to a double-ridge, with a second set sprouting from behind its ear-frills. Slightly less graceful than younger stages, they are by no means clumsy. Adult dragons weigh roughly 8,000 pounds and are over 40-ft. long on average.
Adult dragons range in age from 100 years old to 500 years.
Adults are fluent in Draconic, and are quite well spoken, being willing to converse with mortals if it suits them to do so. Adult dragons sometimes learn human languages, but prefer to gain knowledge of planar or mystical tongues such as Infernal, Celestial, or Sylvan. Adults are more likely to parley with individuals than younger dragons, but still look down on mortals as being inferior.

Combat:
Adult dragons are sophisticated physical forces capable of tremendous damage in battle. Their prefered tactic is to strafe a foe with their breath weapon, then land to attack directly.
  • Breath Weapon (Ex): An adult's breath weapon deals 10d10 points of fire damage in a 50-ft. cone. The Reflex save DC is 24.
  • Improved Grab (Ex): An adult that hits an opponent of size Large or smaller with two claw attacks in the same round may attempt to start a grapple as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity, dealing bite damage automatically each round the grapple is maintained.
  • Swallow Whole (Ex): An adult dragon may attempt to swallow creatures of up to Medium-size.

Treasure: Triple Standard

At the peak of their growth, the elder dragon is nearly twice the size of an adult, and have lost a bit more of the agility found in younger specimens. Standing well over 20-ft. at the shoulders, elder dragons are terrifying to behold, and their wings are known to create temporary partial eclipses at times due to sheer size. Their dual-horned ridge is now fully developed, matching rows of horns line their chins, and their eyes glow with an inner fire. Elders weigh over 25,000 pounds and are at least 80-ft. from nose to tail, with a wingspan nearly three-times their length.
Elder dragons are all over 500 years old, and possess no maximum age. The oldest known elder dragon resides in Loch Ness, and is nearly 4,000 years of age.
Of all dragons, elders are the most likely to meaningfully converse with mortals. They know many languages, and are able to affect vocal sounds similar to humans to be clearly understood. They are proud creatures, however, and will not tolerate their supremacy being challenged by what they consider inferior, which includes all beings aside from other dragons.

Combat:
Elder dragons are among the most dangerous creatures that walk the earth. They prefer fast, impressive displays of power and tend to humiliate their foes by toying with them in battle, much as a cat does with a mouse, only killing a victim when they feel the time is right.
  • Breath Weapon (Ex): An elder's breath weapon deals 14d10 points of fire damage in a 60-ft. cone. The Reflex save DC is 29.
  • Improved Grab (Ex): An elder that hits an opponent of size Huge or smaller with two claw attacks in the same round may attempt to start a grapple as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity, dealing bite damage automatically each round the grapple is maintained.
  • Swallow Whole (Ex): An elder dragon may attempt to swallow creatures of up to Large size.
