Physical Avian Characteristics
[Beak] When his mutation awoke as he was infected with Apocalypse's nanites, Beak's body began to take on the characteristics of a bird. While he might argue that his mutation is hawk or eagle-like, it is more similar to that of a chicken, something that often makes him the target of insults. His beak was the first feature to develop, his nose extending into a hardened point (although it still currently appears as skin). The lining of his beak is ribbed, making it easier to slice through things. His lower jaw is flatter than the average human, molding into his upper beak perfectly.
[Eyesight] In addition to his characteristic beak, his eyes are proportionally larger than most. His eyesight is exceptionally advanced; he is able to process information much faster than a human and register movement. Like most birds, he can also see in the ultraviolet spectrum.
[Skeletonal / Body Physiology] Barnell's skeletal structure is considerably lighter than a normal human's. His bones are hollow, and his body stores no excess amount of fat. Though his bones are hollow, they can resist a considerable amount of force.
[Wings] As his mutation progresses, Barnell will begin to sprout feathers, and eventually full-fledged wings. He will begin to first learn to glide, and then struggle to fly. His musculature will also adapt to become a stronger flyer.
[Bird Hands / Feet] Barnell's hands and feet will eventually take on the characteristics of a bird, becoming hairless (or in Beak's case featherless) sets of talons. WEAKNESS:
His physical mutations make him a reject of human society, although he often ignores or forgets this fact until it is brought up..
His beak sometimes make it difficult to eat certain foods, especially those of an amorphous substance (jell-O). His advanced eyes also make adapting to sudden bright lights painful.
His wings will take some time to grow, and as he is not completely confident with the idea of flying, he will take some time to learn to fly.PERSONALITY
Barnell was raised to always believe in himself. If he thought he was bad at something, he was urged to work on it. School, baseball, or even dancing, his parents brought him up to trust in himself. Over all, he embraced this belief, adopting an optimistic look on life. Despite his appearance, he is incredibly social and polite. Even if he has to lie about it, he'll probably still be like that. His mutation, unlike most other peoples, is nearly useless. All it has done is made him look like a bird. His greatest weakness is a lack in faith in himself as a mutant -- not as a person. As a mutant he is simply there, incapable of nothing. This self-doubt radiates around him whenever he is involved in some activity that involves flexing his mutant prowess (which is almost never).
A born Sagittarius, Barnell is good-humored, jovial, and a great friend. He'll sit and listen to anything that needs to be said and offer the most sound advice he can possibly conjure. Full of boundless energy (unless the subject of flying is brought into conversation), Barnell is willing to leap into anything with blind carelessness. He's quick to take responsibility and gets restless when someone else is in trouble. Without something to occupy himself, he is prone to becoming a little depressed, sort of like a dog whose master will not play with him. When this happens, Barnell is a self-pity machine.
Beak is an avid fan of baseball and finds the sport to be "too cool for school." It is his dream to play in the major leagues, and he can often be found outside practicing his swing. His most prized possession is a titanium bat.HISTORY
Barnell Bohusk was born in Cheverly, Maryland, free of any features that might label him as a mutant. He was a relatively active child, enjoying the times there were to be had. Childhood was always a delightful experience. Barnell had an abundance of friends and companions, and even a little dog named Tito. Truthfully, there wasn't really much of Barnell's past that he wouldn't look bad on fondly.
Things didn't really change for Barnell until the events of Apocalypse.
He was outside of DC when War attacked with his mother and father (both managed to escape). One of many mutants who were turned to evil endeavors by infectious nanites, the assimilation of the nanites into his body awoke his mutant genes. Over the course of his possession, Barnell's body changed. His face began to extend into a hardened structure resembling the beak of a bird, his eyesight greatly increased (as did the size of his eyes), and he felt himself become lighter as his skeletal structure became hollow. His body changed during Apocalypse, but Barnell himself did not.
Following his possession, he briefly returned home. Over the course of several weeks, he struggled to become accustomed to his new appearance. The transformation changed him physically, but he was still the same Barnell. To everyone else -- his friends, his classmates -- he was someone new. Someone they didn't like. A mutant. One of the monsters that had caused the travesty in the world. His mother and father were understanding, sharing unconditional love with their son. After things on the other side of the state lines calmed down, he was contacted by a school for gifted youngsters. Barnell was always an intelligent boy, recieving slightly above average grades, but to be recruited by a school? It was an opportunity of a lifetime.
Through the contacts of the Xavier Institute, Barnell (accompanied by his father) was able to leave on a month-long internship in order to prepare himself for the new school.SAMPLE RP POST:
Barnell stood in the bathroom, looking at the mirror. In one hand was a bottle of shaving cream and in the other, nothing. Furrowing his brow, he eyed the red and white canister. Pressing down with a finger on the tab/button of the bottle, the rushing noise of foam escaping the bottle and flooding into his open palm filled the bathroom. Setting the barbasol bottle down, he lathered his chin and worked all the way back to his cheeks. Even lathering an inch above the edge of his upper lip, his face was soon covered in a layer of shaving cream. Cleaning his hand in the sink, Barnell reached for the razor.
He was as delicate as anyone. With small, short strokes, Barnell passed the razor over his chin, following the direction of the hair like his father taught him. A slow process, he watched in the mirror as the white cream was slowly drawn away on the lip of the razor, leaving behind a peach-fuzz free strip. With the delicacies of any young man, Barnell continued the process, cleaning the razor under a torrent of water every few swipes. Soon, his extended face was clean -- nice and smooth. Smoother than a rock polished with sand.
Well, his face was anyways.
Attacking his throat with the razor as he had his beak, Barnell used his spare hand to pull down the collar of his shirt. His larged, keen eyes tracked the pathway of the razor as he continued down the delicate line of his lithe neck. As he passed beneath the collar line, he winced, feeling a sharp tuck on the area.
Setting the razor down, Barnell leaned close to the mirror, turning his head to the side to accomodate for his beak. Looking at the mirror, he tugged down the collar again to expose the spot that was hurt. A small bead of blood had collected, but that wasn't what he was looking at.
Sticking out of his skin was a transluscent calamus, a premature hollow shaft to what would -- he thought horrifically -- spread over his body. It was the first... the first! There were even the tufty little barbs sticking out of a really, really tiny rachis... It was all white...!
He stared at it a little longer, studying it, poking it on the sides like one would a pimple; he even gave it a quick tug and, after having affirmed that it existed, he leaned back, staring at it in the mirror.
"Ma! I'm pluming!"
