Maximilian owns and manages several businesses (many for the Hellfire Club). He recently opened three businesses in Salem: a late-teen/young adult oriented club called The Haven, an upscale lounge and restaurant called The King’s Court, and an art gallery, Coleridge Gallery. All three businesses are located on the same city block, with the gallery positioned between the Haven and King’s Court. There are inner doors connecting the gallery to both businesses.

Physical Appearance: Maximilian is a man in peak physical condition, although his designer suits tend to hide how good his really muscle tone is. He is clean shaven with short, dark hair. He always wears dark wrap-around glasses, their lens so opaque they’re solid black and reminiscent of a blind man’s shades. His eyes are completely black and are the only external indication that he’s a mutant. He was born into a wealthy and privileged family and has had the best of everything. His wardrobe is filled with the finest GQ attire of the jet setting elite.
However, the Shroud aspect of Maximilian is quite different… the exact opposite, in fact. As The Shroud, he is grim and humorless; his face is always in shadow. He exudes a coldness calculated to keep people at bay. He projects a stern personality, not inclined to suffer fools at all.
Distinguishing Marks: His eyes are completely black.
Clothing style: Maximilian is impeccably dressed and tends toward the men’s current fashion in Milan rather than to simply stick with the classic (conventional) men’s apparel. As the Shroud, he creates the hooded cloak from ‘Darkforce.’ The hood covers the upper half of his face, leaving the bottom half uncovered.
Powers: Summon Darkforce: The Shroud possesses the mutant ability to summon absolute darkness: Darkforce. This darkness is not simply the absence of light, but the negation of it. No illumination can penetrate it. It is unknown how much of this darkness the Shroud can summon at once. He can blanket a small auditorium in darkness within several seconds. The darkness he projects does not fill a volume instantly: it is possible to see its hazy boundary move like thick, black smoke in the air. There appears to be no limit to the length of time the Shroud can maintain the darkness. However, if the Shroud is rendered unconscious, the darkness fades away.
Control Darkforce: The Shroud has control over the darkness so as to create hazy-edged, featureless black shapes with it, the complexity of which is limited only by his imagination. He frequently forms the darkness into his own shadow in order to serve as a decoy. However, Darkforce has no mass (no weight) and neither do the shapes created with it. For example: Max can create a baseball bat with Darkforce and although it would as strong as he desires it to be, using in as a weapon would carry the same force as though it were made of foam. Likewise, he could create a staircase sturdy enough to withstand weight without breaking but it would be light and easily moved.
Extraordinary Sight:The Shroud possesses an extrasensory perception enabling him to "see" even through his own mantle of darkness. This ability gives him psychic impressions of his environment within a radius of about 100 feet of him. The Shroud can receive non-visual sensory impressions through solid objects. Thus, he can perceive people and objects in the room next to him with the ease that he can perceive the contents of the room he is in.
Darkforce teleport: Shroud can "teleport" by summoning a Darkforce portal, which appears as an area a foggy darkness at the entrance and destination points. Stepping through the portal provides instant travel for Shroud and anyone who steps through with him.
Additional Information- Martial Arts: The Shroud is an Olympic level athlete with extensive training in several fields of Oriental martial arts, and is adept at acrobatics and infiltration.
Hellfire Club connections: As a member of the Hellfire Club hierarchy, The Shroud has access to worldwide resources of wealth and information. This will enable him to have ‘seemingly impossible to get’ information.
Weakness: Maximilian is physically blind. He has a physical mutation which turned his pupils and the whites of his eyes black. However, his mutation negates this blindness, allowing him to “see” as well as most people. He persists with the charade of being handicapped as part of his playboy persona. After years of training and discipline, Max will not react to any purely visual stimulation.
He is a public figure and his status as a mutant is a secret.
His status as the Black King for the New England Hellfire Club has benefits but it also entails a certain amount of risk, from ambitious minions and displeasure from superiors within the organization.
Personality: Maximilian has an extremely dualistic personality, with a clear separation between his public personality and private personality.
During social functions, Max shows his quick wit and devilish sense of humor. His wide smile has been the downfall of saints and angels, hinting of temptation for those brave enough to take just one step closer. Maximilian Coleridge is a jet-setting playboy, with a charming manner. Max is one of the few of the social elite with a disability, however rather than downplaying his blindness, he utilizing this is to his advantage; always bringing a bevy of beautiful women with him as his “guides.”
As the Shroud, he is extremely serious and grim, accepting nothing less than perfection from himself and everyone around him. He has a cold, tactical mentality and always has several plans in motion at any one time. He has meticulous personality and tends to be a control freak, coordinating every detail of missions and his own life.
The Hellfire Club is traditionally very lax about how its members achieve their goals, the bottom line and the continued safety of the Club are all that matter. However, the Shroud operates under his own very strict moral code. For example, he has achieved his success without ever killing anyone… in several cases death would have been the more merciful option.
Max knows that aspect of him self is not kind but regards it stoically and considers himself to be somewhat like a surgeon for society: wielded clumsily, a knife could be plunged into a heart causing death, however a blade (a scalpel) used with skill, can also be used to cut away disease and injury, preserving life.
History: [Maximilian in canon Marvel is a thinly veiled copy of Batman, in personality and history, and I intend to keep that aspect to the character.] At the age of 10, the child who would grow up to become The Shroud saw his parents gunned down right before his eyes. This was the catalyst that steered his life and personality. His wealthy parents were members of an organization called The Hellfire Club, which took a special interest in the newly orphaned boy. While Max blamed crime for his parents’ death, with the guidance Hellfire mentors, he also blamed the random cruelty of the world.
In his mid-teens, he sought guidance and joined the mysterious temple called "Cult of Kali", where he studied various styles of martial arts and skills. After several years of intense training, he graduated from that temple. During the celebration ceremony, his mutation manifested and what was a symbolic act “The Kiss of Kali” blinded him. Following a period of intense pain and hospitalization, he realized that his eyesight had been replaced by a mutation for extrasensory perception.
Before joining the Cult of Kali, Maximilian was merely a member of the Hellfire, like thousands of others of the social elite. After his mutation manifested, he became more of an interest to the Hellfire Club hierarchy. Eventually finding an equilibrium between the Hellfire Club goals and his own ridged ideology, Max’s tireless and often frighteningly ruthless approach to their enemies made him an invaluable asset to the Club and elevated him to being the Black King for New England region of the Hellfire Club.
