Powers: Rictor has the mutant ability to create powerful seismic waves from his hands. These waves can range in intensity. They can cause an object to gently hum and shake or cause violent tremors through the Earth’s crust. Rictor’s powers can affect organic as well as inorganic material.
Obviously the size of the object will determine how much effort Julio has to expend on it. An object the size of an apple will take little effort on his part to destroy. It is fairly simple to make an object of that size resonate and reach its threshold for vibratory frequencies and explode. An object the size of a car would take much more effort than that the previous apple sized object. When his vibrations are used on larger scale, like the ground around him, the effect is similar to an earthquake.
One application of Rictor’s powers that is very taxing is an interesting manipulation of the earth. He can produce the vibratory waves and direct them into the ground before him and if they are at the correct angle it can cause the ground to undulate underneath his feet. If Rictor continues to direct the vibrations into the undulating crust he can ride the crest of the earth like a surfer. Riding this bulge of earth, he can leave a wake of destruction behind him. Cars and debris can be flipped and left to ruin by using this technique.
Although, his powers are not strictly earth related, Julio does appear to have an empathic connection to the strata beneath his feet. Being on the ground gives him a degree of confidence. Since his powers are based on vibrations, he can sometimes feel vibrations through the ground (he must be either barefoot or use his hands to feel the ground). He can discern the possibility of advancing enemies based on the seismic vibrations.
Weakness: Some listed above.
Julio is very susceptible to psychic assaults of any kind. He can fall prey to telepathic attacks. Any illusionary power can work well against him making him believe something that is not really there.
Though Rictor can use his vibrations on virtually anything it is when that he is on a ship or on a plane that he feels uneasy. Being on the ground gives him unwavering confidence in his powers. He can affect a larger area on the ground by generating earthquakes. When he is separated from the earth by fathoms of water or thousands of feet of air he must focus his powers on a single or relatively few objects, as opposed to an expanse of dirt. Rictor is able to shoot the vibratory waves towards an object; however, the farther away an object is the more the waves dissipate.
Personality: Julio dresses for functionality. During his days as a mercenary he would wear heavy-duty boots, khaki cargo pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a flak jacket. Having moved to the city his style has shifted slightly, but still frequents his flack jacket.
Because of his days as a mercenary he has developed a kind of emotionless personality. It was necessary for him to succeed on past missions and assignments. He was trained that emotions block judgment and hinder one’s abilities. However, now he strives to shed that part of his past and become a productive member of society.
He was often the loner type, with very few friends outside of his mercenary group. While on his journey for change he has made a few friends and had a few short-term relationships. He longs for companionship, but his past and brooding personality come back to haunt him and hinder dating life.
History:As a child Julio was very wealthy, but suffered child abuse. He often resented his father, a Mexican drug lord, who had little time for him. When he was upset his father would give him money and tell him to go buy himself something. Other times his father would beat him and say to suck it up and be a man. He was somewhat relieved that the abuse would stop, yet was naïve enough to mourn his father’s death.
At the age of nine his father was killed, and he was sent to several foster homes. Each of the foster homes were different and many of the families cared for young Julio; others did not. It was simply too difficult to take care of a young grieving boy. After the first year or so after his father’s death he seemed to be slipping back into his normal young self. He was more active in the family, performed better in school, made a few friends, and even cried less. It seemed life was turning in favor for Julio, but that would quickly change.
At 14 his mutant abilities emerged. One evening he was at a local arcade with a couple friends and out of frustration stomped his foot several times. As a result a large crack appeared in the concrete and stretched outside and across the street. That night, at around one o’clock in the morning, Julio was asleep and having a nightmare. The house began to shake violently and car alarms were soon blaring outside. His foster mother ran in to get him and saw that he was still asleep. He was tossing and turning which compared to the earthquake seemed like nothing. She quickly woke him and darted for the closest doorway; the earthquake soon subsided. His foster mother thought it was only an earthquake, but Julio felt in his gut that he was the one who caused it.
He tried to keep his powers a secret, but found it more difficult over time. On several occasions he would point an object like a glass of water or something through a store window and the objects would explode and shatter. Once his friends knew about his mutation they stopped hanging around and playing with him. Other times they would deliberately avoid him. His foster family tried their best to aid him in keeping his powers a secret, but word about his powers spread. Soon his family was threatened by racist and supremacy groups, and Julio, for his family’s safety, decided to leave.
At 16 he joined a band of mercenaries where he gained senses of teamwork and loyalty. At first they were afraid of his mutant ability, but soon praised him for it was an asset on many missions. With the mercenaries he gained skills such as weapons mastery, marksmanship, and was also able to hone his mutant ability. He learned English as a second language and is now able to speak it fluently. He quickly learned unarmed combat as frequent scuffles were common. The scuffles were a form of competition as well as entertainment. They allowed individuals to express one’s masculinity within the group, practice and sharpen skills, and also a means to stroke one’s ego.
He stayed with the band of mercenaries for 7½ years. Two weeks after his 24th birthday he was captured on a mission and held for three weeks. The enemy found out about his powers as he used them to escape. It was an unsuccessful attempt because he was shot with a tranquilizer dart and taken back to his holding cell where he was beaten and tortured. The enemy now viewing him as valuable used him as leverage and killed Julio’s leader. Both sides suffered many casualties in the resulting firefight. Julio used his abilities to cause massive devastation on the enemy forces, killing almost all of its members and emerging victorious. He was named one of the top officers of his band, but declined. Deciding it would be best to leave he used what contacts he had and moved to the United States.
SAMPLE RP POST: Music was playing from a small portable radio setting on a crate. The rapid clicking of a ratchet and moans of labor from twisting stubborn bolts and screws emitted from below an old Jeep. Julio lay on his back stretching his arms into the Jeep’s undercarriage. He was finishing putting on a starter motor on a Jeep worthy of the junk yard. But like those stubborn bolts the Jeep just would not quit running.
He rolled out from under the Jeep and got off the creeper. His once white wife beater and worker pants were soiled with a mix of dirt, oil, and grease from working on cars all day. He worked the kinks and stiffness out of his muscles as sweat ran down his brow. He wiped it with the back of his hand which only added to the large amounts of grease that was already there. Mechanic work was hard work, but still not as harsh as some jobs the others have. At least here he had a garage which meant shade, shelter from the weather, and a radio to help pass the time. Compared to the others this was luxury.
He remembered his father ranting about illegal immigrants and how they were giving everyone a bad name. He said stuff like “why would those people want to leave Mexico and go to the United States when they had everything they could ever want here in Mexico.” At that time Julio didn’t understand it either, but now he realized there are many different reasons. For him it was for a new life; to become something different and seek out new possibilities, and this was just the first step in that life.
He drank from his lukewarm water bottle and examined the list of parts that needed replacing. It would take the better part of the day, and possibly the next, before the jeep was finished. He crossed off “starter motor” and proceeded down to the next item. “Brake pads/shoes” he read. At least this time he wouldn’t have to be beneath it.
