POWERSGENERAL DESCRIPTION: Flight is usually attained by wings or some sort of propulsion. Aero has 'an aura' that allows her 'to float and ride airwaves'. Exactly how that works is unknown, to Melody at least. As for control... let's say she's lucky if she doesn't crash land. She's moderately good at moving around in the sky, though, attempting loops and other such aerial feats. She’s getting better… she just hasn’t been a mutant for very long.
She hasn't tested how high she can reach, her endurance, etc, but it'd be right to assume that she hasn't tried going higher than fifty feet. She could likely go a few hundred feet at this point. Aero may be able to go higher with more control. However, she won't be able to pass the point that humans can go safely without some kind of protection. Something for oxygen and something for the cold, at least, and possibly pressurized. As it is, those may be the major issues with her pushing her limits.
Speed isn't one of her greatest assets at the moment, maybe going fifteen to twenty miles an hour if she's pushing herself. She's pretty sure she'll be able to go faster with some training, though that might not be the case... or it might make a small difference. Its uncertain since she's not sure exactly how her flight works. She could pass someone that was, say, running at average speed, since she could keep that same speed for a good distance. Longer if she's not pushing herself. And of course, if she's in a dive or descending, she'd be going much faster, but she'd probably crash land if its not a controlled dive.
WEAKNESS: She's got the same weaknesses as anyone else, besides the fact that she has the flight-evasion facet. She's not any tougher than your average teenager, though she won't let that stop her from showing off her questionable flying skills. Going too high, with the various problems that go with it, may end up being a problem. She might end up going too high without realizing the danger and passing out.
PERSONALITYAero isn't quite the same cheerful girl as she used to be. She still has 'got her head on straight' and has her priorities straight. She just has had reality shoved in her face, the reality of the mutant-human struggles. Her illusions of safety are shattered. She's scared, for herself, her family, and her friends, she's traumatized from being trapped, and she's still adjusting to what happened.
For all that she's a social creature, she's responsible more often than not. She knows her priorities. She's always put family first, school second, ... and snuck fun in whenever she could. Though she's not quite as outgoing as some of her siblings, she's not shy. She'll speak her mind, and give as good as she gets in the teasing department. Pretty easygoing, she's got a long fuse and its not explosive when it does reach its end.. more like pop rocks than firecrackers. Mel just doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She isn't a ditz, but she can have her moments like anyone, forgetting some obvious thing or someone's name or what she was doing.
Mel comes from a deeply religious family. How much of that she will adhere to now that she's leaving the nest is uncertain, however it has fundamentally affected her growing up and helped shape her personality. Even if she disagrees with certain things, her morals align pretty closely with the ideals of her family. Things are still pretty black and white for her, she hasn't yet noticed how the world tends to blur into gray in places.
She's not as stifled as she was growing up, but even at Xaviers she's under the shadow of her many siblings. The middle child of a very large family, and a mutant, the fifteen year old doesn't have a complete sense of self. She's so-and-so's sister, she's a Guthrie, and now she's Aero. Its rare that she can just be Melody. She'll remain in her siblings shadows, as she's had several siblings head to the institute already and make impressions. She wants to set herself apart in some way, prove herself to her siblings, especially since her powers aren't quite as flashy or useful as theirs. She loves flying, though, and the freedom that comes with it. She wouldn't trade it if she had the choice.
HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE With a family like the Guthries, when talking about one, the others' are tightly intertwined in describing that one's life. Melody grew up with her parents, five brothers, and four sisters. She was four years old when their father died. It was tough, but her eldest brother Sam worked to keep the family afloat. They all worked, doing whatever they could. He left when she was eleven, because he needed help with his powers. Before long one of her older sisters, Paige, joined him as her mutation manifested. One by one, the Guthrie children's powers manifested.
In a mostly anti-mutant town, that made growing up difficult in one way or another for each of them. The anti-mutant sentiment and general animosity toward the Guthries was embodied in the Cabots. Mel was one of the few that didn't participate much in the family feud, worrying more for her brothers. Her younger brother Jeb fought with them, while her older brother Joshua had fallen in love with a member of the family.
Unfortunately, though the love was requited, the family found out and there was more fighting than ever. It ended with the father attempting to kill Jay. It apparently worked, his Julia killed herself, and ... Joshua healed from his wounds, to discover her dead. In the time that came after that, he tried to kill himself several times. It was heart-wrenching to his family. Meanwhile, Mel's younger brother Jeb's powers emerged in a fight with another one of the Cabots and was shot by a police offer in an attempt to protect the other boy.
Despite the struggles in the family, Mel got decent grades, maintaining a 'B' average. She had an after school job and helped her older sister Liz take care of their younger sibs. She's always looked up to her older siblings, especially Liz since they were particularly close. Though she didn't know Sam and Paige as well as the ones closer to her age, she had always wanted to join them. She wanted to have powers like them, and get away from her problems.. even though thoughts like that made guilt gnaw away at her.
DURING APOCALYPSE (April 5th through April 12th, 2009) Melody was safe at home during the Apocalypse. The family was affected as everyone else was in the world that were not directly hit by the Horsemen. She was of course terrified, but far more worried for her family that she just knew were dealing with it first hand.
POST-APOCALYPSE As much as she loved her family, she felt like she was suffocating at times. When her power manifested, she had an excuse to leave. To go to the school, to study, to train her powers or whatever. But she didn't go, at first. She didn't say anything about her powers, even when Joshua and Jeb left for Xavier's after the apocalypse. Almost all of the older kids had gone, and she felt guilty about leaving the family behind. She brought in money, even if it wasn't much since she only worked part time at minimum wage.. Eventually, though, her sister Liz caught on and questioned her about it. Melody admitted to having powers and wanting to join their siblings at the mansion, and before long she was packed up and ready to go. Knowing she'd miss everyone, but excited to see her other siblings and 'surprise' them.
She has been at Xaviers ever since, training and making friends. There, she was still 'another Guthrie' and had to work with and against assumptions about her and her family. Still she came to love Xaviers as a second home. She became more outgoing and encouraged in exploring her interests. Her flying has improved a great deal... at least, it is now rare for her to crash in normal circumstances. She wasn't as effected by WwX as those who were swapped with alter selves from that reality. The whole situation confused her, as much as she was aware of it. Mostly she just focused on school work, which actually made sense.
The Purifiers attack on Xavier's mansion left Melody injured, though the worst of it was a broken leg. She was healed by Josh after being rescued from the rubble by a member of the Brotherhood. The real trauma cannot be so easily healed. The time from the explosion until she was dug out, she was trapped with the impaled body of a classmate. A friend. A crush. He didn't die immediately. He was fully conscious as he died, and she kept him company, crying with him, telling him they were going to be okay, that help was coming. It was too late, when help finally did come. It was just one of many deaths. It was also the end of Melody Guthrie's childhood, sheltered and protected as much as her sibs could make it.
SAMPLE RP POST:Freckles. Damn it, every summer, she was cursed with freckles. And not just a few across her nose for added cuteness. No, they were scattered all across her face. It wasn't the end of the world, Mel knew there were more important matters, but damnitall if there was one thing she hated about summer it was the freckles. They came, every year, without fail. Burn, skip the tan, and freckle like crazy. It just wasn't fair. Then again... she knew as well as anyone that life wasn't fair. She and her
nine siblings lost their father at a young age. The middle Guthrie girl had started working young, like the rest of them, to help out. And even with everyone working, she still got hand-me-downs from her older sisters. And now that the world had nearly ended, things were tougher than ever.
Sighing, she tied her hair back in a pony-tail. Since school was out for the summer, she was working full time. It was minimum wage, but she couldn't really get anything better than that at her age. Particularly now, and in this town... and with her family. Even though it wasn't yet known that she was a mutant, that she could fly, they were just waiting to see what this Guthrie was. They'd have to wait for it, until she was on the news for saving the world with her older sibs. And that wouldn't be a while yet, considering she hadn't even told anyone in her family that she was a mutant too. Still, work was work, and she did her share the same as everyone else in their family.
Glancing into the mirror one last time after she finished getting ready, she shook her head at the preoccupation with her appearance - hardly a regular thing for her - and headed out. After closing the front door, she took the next few steps in a run and jumped the steps… going further than should be possible, her aura visible for a moment before she let herself fall to the ground in a run. She’d dallied in the bathroom too long, and if she didn’t hurry her silly ass she’d be late to work.
