THE RULES.
ah, the rules. just a few things that you should abide by here at HTSL. please make sure to read carefully!

--------------------------------

REGISTRATION
    i. When you sign up, please register with your character’s first, middle, and last name all in capital letters. After you are accepted, you cannot change your username unless you specifically ask me or another admin. So please, if you are going to be Dumbledore, register as 'Albus Dumbledore' and not Dumblebabe. If it so happens that you would like to change your username at any time, send us a PM and feel our wrath for not reading or heeding Rule Number One. Just kidding XD.
ii. As of right now this is a canon only site, but don’t let that turn you off to everything else. The list is pretty extensive, and we’ll add to it whenever we happen to stumble upon a new one. If there is a non-canon that you are interested in then PM an admin with the basics of the history or a plot idea and we will take it into account. Once we have a good amount of canons we will open it up to both, so that’s that, I suppose.
iii. Once you register, you must have an avatar of your face claim. In regards to signatures, which are obviously optional, the graphics really should not be more than 500x200 - since they stretch the board all sorts of ugly ways. If you don't want to make one yourself, then you can always request one in the graphics thread. I find it helps visualize the characters better and it's a lot more fun!
iv. Do not post unless you are accepted! This is fairly easy to understand. My fellow admins and I will try to accept you as soon as possible so that you can post right away, but your bio really must be finished first. And if it’s not? Put it in the unfinished section for us to look at beforehand.

ETIQUETTE
    i. Please be polite to the other people on the board, and do not fight or harass one another. In-character conversations are different because we know not all characters get along with one another, but in regards to OOC, you should be as polite as possible. If someone is harassing you either by PM or another way, let me, or one of the other admins know. Same goes for any other security measures you might be concerned about.
ii. No spamming! There is a SPAM board, at the bottom of the forum, and in that little area it's perfectly fine, but don't do it anywhere else please. Double posting is included in spamming. I don't see why there is any reason for you to double post unless there is an accident or you need to correct yourself, in that case there is a modify/edit button. Use it well.
iii. Try to be active! The last thing we want is members signing up just for the heck of it. You don’t have to spend all day on the boards, but try to check in and post whenever you can so that the threads are up to pace. I will not hesitate to archive them or delete your account. The s.ec.ret w.o.rd, by the way, is rennervate!
iv. This is a mature rated site, so swearing, sex, drugs, etc. is allowed, just as it would be in real life 1980. The point of this is to be as realistic as possible within these given realms - which means, people swear, and stuff of the like. It does not mean your character should be spewing off the F word every sentence. If it would make you feel more comfortable, just put an [R] in front of the title as a warning to those reading. As long as your characters aren’t hooking up in broom closets in every thread, we really shouldn’t have a problem.
    v. No godmoding or controlling other people’s characters unless you have their permission. Self explanatory.

POSTING
    i. When writing a post, PLEASE use correct grammar and try to spell check whenever possible. Net speak is absolutely, positively not allowed; not only is it hard to read, it’s annoying too. A few spelling mistakes here and there aren’t going to hurt anyone, but if it becomes a problem where people don’t understand your posts then that’s just… really uncool.
ii. NO ONE-LINERS! If it’s one thing I can’t stand it’s a post that lacks depth. Try to add as much description as possible, bring your character to life. Starting posts to threads should be around 6-8 paragraphs, and replies should be 4-5, however I know sometimes it’s hard to post a novel every time. Trust me, museless-ness sucks. Just put a good amount of effort into your posts, as there are only guidelines and no true requirement.
iii. Remember, this is the 1970s-80s. There really is a lot of freedom because we don’t know a lot of what happened between the lines of the story, so although you must stick to the guidelines, you can have fun with relationships and whatnot. I find that the Lexicon helps immensely. My motto is that if it could honest-to-goodness plausibly happen, then it’s fine with me. But PLEASE stay true to the time!

CHARACTERS
    i. Do not use a celebrity that doesn’t suit your character. Severus Snape was not canon-wise godly hot. So do not use some drop dead alpha hunk to play him. That’s all.
ii. Please do not kill yourself or another character without permission. This is a canon site, and obviously people are going to get hurt or die, or get married and get pregnant, but please either post it in a plot board, or PM one of the admins before any large event like this, that way it's not a complete and total shocker.
iii. Your character is not perfect. Do not make him/her appear that way. No one is perfect, so… there we go.
iv. On the same note… no Mary/Gary Sues. Those typical, 2 dimensional characters everyone loves to hate. It makes for boring RP’s. So give them life, spice them up. You know the drill, I’m sure.
    v. There is a limit of three canon characters per site member, as long as they are all active. This is to ensure that anyone registering gets a chance to take up a canon if they wish to. However, we are willing to make exceptions, so if you really want to play a certain character above your three already, then go ahead and PM an admin for further direction.
