Title: WCCA

Sly Eagle - January 2, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
The Web Cartoonist Choice Awards is underway nearly half a year earlier than it used to be. Last year was for comics that were up in 2005 or prior, or so I thought, at least, so we didn't participate. However, I think we should be eligible for this year's awards.

So.

I know a few of you are comic artists yourselves. For the WCCA, only webcomickers can participate, so I suggest you guys register. Plus, I also suggest you guys nominate Ambition. ;) We're eligible for a number of categories, including "Oustanding Newcomer," but we won't even be considered unless another artist nominates us. This is an excellent chance for us to get a lot of exposure, so PLEASE, if you like Ambition, let other people know we're here.

On that note, Luth'rai and I are working on our list of nominees. If you are not a webcartoonist and know some webcomics that you think are deserving and no one seems to know about, drop the links here and Luth'rai and I will take a look at them.

Heh. I likely should have mentioned that any of the comics that are on our links page are, in fact, comics we both know about, and probably like. (I'm actually going to sort the ones we love and suggest from the ones we just have link exchanges with pretty soon).

On that note, I'm going to ask a relatively inflammatory question. Why on earth does everyone like Dreamland Chronicles? I find it one of the most annoying comics out there. On top of that, everyone seems to like it/link to it/etcetc., which drives me to out and out hate it.

My complaints are very much centered on the rendering, for starters. I've always hated posed 3D cg characters as characters in still comics. They've got no feeling, no motion, no sense of balance or drama. I can usually give credit to a high amount of detail done by one guy. But this is a team of professional animators, and it still looks like crap. At least the poses should have some semblance of physics to them in at least the "real" world.

Secondly, the pacing. Or I should say, what pacing? The story drags along at a dull, consitent thud. The panels are boring to look at and the pictures compliment the story rather poorly, especially since the dialogue is sure to make it clear what has just happened for the pictures. Gargh.

Lastly, the story itself. Sorry, guys, but hardly all that original. And it has no good characters or dialogue to back it up. In both the dreamworld, and the real world, the characters are 100% unbelievable. Most irritating to me is that whatshisface and his twin brother (who live together at supposedly "college" in a room that looks like it belongs in a bed and breakfast - nothing like a college dorm) do not at all have a relationship like any sort of pair of brothers I've ever met, and I know a lot of boys. Instead, their relationship is something like a stock boyfriend/girlfriend-just started dating from a made for tv movie. NOTHING like how two boys who grew up together would actually act.

This comic is nothing but purple skin and 80s kids cartoons, IMHO, so WHY?!

Ahh well, everybody has their own taste. Like many people I know like Davinci Code while I say it's the crapiest book ever.

There is a web-comic I would suggest to check it out, "Catena" is its name. I'm not sure if it's well known but it's worth it

www.catenamanor.com/

"Catena" is about a bunch of cats living in a manor. I find the drawings very good and the coloring ....happy.

Yes. Yes. And Yes.

I think the reason everyone likes this webcomic is because it updates daily. That's all you need to do to gain fans apparently. *sigh*

Ok, I'll post the webcomics I like, while trying not to mention the ones on your link page.

My favorite webcomic is easily,

Talismen: Return of the Exile: http://www.talismenseries.com/

After that I read:

Commissioned: http://www.commissionedcomic.com/ (somewhat mature though)

CtrlAltDel: http://cad-comic.com/ (definitely mature)

General Protection Fault: http://www.gpf-comics.com/

Goblins: http://goblinscomic.com/ (perhaps mature for violence)

Mystic Revolution: http://www.mysticrev.com/

Questionable Content: http://www.questionablecontent.net/ (not quite as questionable as the name makes it sound)

Order of the Stick: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0397.html

Help Desk: http://ubersoft.net/

There are others, but they were either mentioned or in your links etc. etc.
I don't have my own webcomic (I can't draw... I write... but art is not me at all) but if I did I'd vote for this as outstanding newcomer.
