Title: Lesson 4
Description: Than / Then
Zap Electro - November 29, 2005 03:22 AM (GMT)
Here's a nifty thing to keep in mind about the use of the words "than" and "then". The scanlation team recently had a problem with this, so I thought it would be useful to write out a summary.
Than:
Than (a conjunction) is ALWAYS a word used for comparison, usually with two things being compared in a "more than" or "less than" statement. It seems simple enough, but sometime "than" and "then" can get mixed up quite easily.
Easy Example: The price of the car was more than I could afford.
In the example, you are comparing the price of something and the amount you can afford. Pretty easy stuff.
Then:
"Then" refers to time, and usually has to do with chronological orders.
Example: I went to the store, then I went back.
You are telling what you did, and what happened next in one sentence. While it is not a heavily enforced grammatical rule, it is technically incorrect to write the sentence(s) like this:
I went to the store. Then, I went back.
But this is actually a disputed grammar problem, so it wouldn't exactly be counted wrong.
Now, here's a tricky one. See if you can get this correct:
"However, this ability lasts no more ___ a few minutes for individuals who surpass me"
Figured it out? The answer is actually "than". Why? Because you aren't actually using the "than/then" to discuss time, but comparing two different times. You are comparing the time the "ability" lasts to a "few minutes". Trick, isn't it? (We ran into this problem while proofreading one of the chapters).

This is not the right place for questions like that....btw you need to become an active member in order to change your member title. Just post a little bit more and you'll gain that right.

Like I said, I only wrote this because we ran into the problem in the scanlation group. We eventually settled on it, but it was a tricky one.

Good job, Zap. I got nothing else to really add. Unless some other people have questions...

Like I mentioned in my response to your question about "too", keep these discussions about the lesson. If you have a question, email us. I'll write up a prep. lesson plan soon, though.
