http://www.animenfo.com/newanime/index.php?d=200604

Also, not on the list:

Finalist
Memories Off 5th OVA

Note that we cannot choose the following because of either licensing issues or other reasons:

Tsubasa Chronicle 2nd Season
Spider Riders ~Oracle Heroes~
Ah! My Goddess 2nd Season
xxxHOLiC
Makai Senki Disgaea
Negima OVA

We could use some of your opinions on possibilities for us to consider. Note that some fansub have already picked up some series to work on. Here's what some of the groups have picked:

Gakuen Heaven - aarinfantasy
Soul Link - AnimeU and Shinsen-Sub
KIBA - Yoroshiku
Digimon Savers - WtW, Anime-Himitsu?, WPP, jinchuuriki, SD
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - a.f.k
ARIA The NATURAL - CrystalNova, Hikari no Kiseki
Simoun - GNU-Fansubs
Joshikousei GIRLS-HIGH - Yoroshiku
Utawarerumono - Static-Subs
Strawberry Panic - GNU-Fansubs
Hulakappa - Kappa <3
Gintama - Baka-Neko, Shinsen-Subs
Makai Senki Disgaea - AnimeU, Osu!-FightingMagic, SD
Ouran Koukou Host Club - Doremi
Air Gear - Shinsen-Subs, AnimeJunkies
Higurashi no Naku koro ni - Ayu
NANA - C1Anime, Shinsen-Subs
Inukami! - GNU-Fansubs
.hack//Roots - Shinsen-Subs, za warudo
Princess Princess - Lolicon
xxxHOLiC - Shinsen-Subs
Black Jack 21 - Froth-Bite
The Third ~Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo~ - Mendoi-Fansubs
TOKKO - Arienai & Gakido, Oyasumi, Shinsen-Subs
Saru Getchu (Ape Escape) - Fighting-Magic
Kamisama Kazoku - The Triad

Note that this doesn't necessarily mean we can't choose these series, though I'd rather not choose a series that more than one group has already picked.

*** Apparently, there are some people that want us to sub this series...badly. The only thing I worry about is that even though it does say that Studio Comet is involved in production and not Media Factory, it's considered fair game, but it's possible that Media Factory still owns the rights to it. School Rumble 2nd Semester I will consider, but please remember, if we get hit for legal reasons, it's on me since I'm the founder of the group. Just think carefully that I have to take the blame if a legal issue falls on us. I can post on Animesuki and check on it if you guys would like.
Also, we risk getting a bad name for ourselves because we are subbing a series that has been made known to all groups not to touch. And I'm sure a lot of groups are well aware that Studio Comet has their name on it for production credits. So why isn't anyone trying to grab it, knowing it's popularity?

Shinikenshi - March 16, 2006 03:03 AM (GMT)
Go for Black Lagoon. There's girls, guns, violence, bad English swearing (at least in the manga), more girls, girls with hideous scars, and some mafia too.

Fun for the whole family. I highly recommend. :E

kijuru - March 16, 2006 03:40 AM (GMT)
Nice list Aquastar! (I guess my PM influenced this post :P) Anyways, I agree with doing something not done by anyone else. I still stand on the argument that school rumble 2 is not by Media Factory(it was first time...but now its not. Possibly Studio Comet), and would be a really good series to do. But ultimately, its Aqua's choice.

My Choice:

School Rumble 2 (if it's not released by MFI)
Black Lagoon (We need to expand our genres. Get some action!)

aquastar831 - March 16, 2006 03:49 AM (GMT)
My top choices so far out of the list:

Finalist (this is not on the master list, so I assume it's delayed a little bit) - anime version of a bishoujo game by Princess Soft who created Natsuiro no Sunadokei.

Memories Off 5th OVA - this is a 30 minute one shot OVA direct to DVD. We have enough staff that AQS could sub this OVA solo

Soul Link - I like the look of it. Only problem is that two fansub groups are already claiming it.

Love GeCHU - Miracle Seiyuu Hakusho - no one has claimed this yet, though I'm not sure how many episodes it will be.

Inukami

Yume Tsukai - this looks interesting. this could possibly be a fun series for us to do.

Himawari - production by Starchild who we know for Love Hina, Negima, Sister Princess, and many other series

Another source to reference to find out some info about these series is NewType USA. The March 06 issue with the Gundam SEED Destiny cover has some short info about a bunch of these series that are starting this spring

Nermie - March 16, 2006 04:39 AM (GMT)
To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing AQS sub Strawberry Panic! We need more of our daily allotment of yuri. Yup. Memories Off 5th would be good as a one-shot too. Hell, while you're at it, go back and do the other Memories Off shows too. Someone should anyways!

Also, I should suggest Onegai My Melody, or else one of my friends will rip out my innards. She wants that subbed so badly.

jopchan121 - March 16, 2006 04:40 AM (GMT)
School Rumble 2-bad idea. Since there is a chance that Media factory has School Rumble 2, We wish to not take that chance. We don't need any unwelcome publicity that may threaten our other projects.....

O_o - March 16, 2006 04:50 AM (GMT)
I'd like to mention we should avoid .hack//roots and Digimon Savers, since these will probably get licensed eventually due to the success of their prequels.

EDIT: And the new Rockman.exe series

Sushi-Y - March 16, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
...!!!...!..

Ok, I'm going to restrain from screami-HIGURASHI NO NAKU KORONI!!!! YOU FOOLS, IS THERE EVEN A NEED TO THINK!!? HIGURASHI IS GOING TO PW-...

..........O, ok... let's calm down...

Seriously, if I had to raise my choices:

Higurashi no Naku Koroni - Imagine this: a doujin sound novel series with craptasic visuals and no ero manages to gain the following: a drama CD series, THREE manga serializations (more planned), a chain of anthology works, a huge variety of goods ranging from figures to board games, music composition and arrangements, multiple secondary creations, and now an anime adaptation with an all-star staff and cast.

There's a REASON for that. Higurashi is the biggest thing to hit the visual novel market since Tsukihime (the first chapters were out before Fate/stay night, but the popularity only skyrocketed recently). I liked it more than Fate/stay night myself. Need I say more?

Then again, I suppose to people who don't know the game, Higurashi is "just another anime on the list", so this is only my opinion. But I can almost guarantee this will be good.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - Translated, it means "Suzumiya Haruhi's Depression". Also the title of the first volume of the novel series. I was drawn to this novel by Itou Noizi's (the same person who drew for the Shakugan no Shana series) art, and I can say this: It's very entertaining. The story kind of has a FLCL taste to it, with a main heroine (Haruhi), a new classmate, who appears kinda "whacked out", searching for aliens and people from the future and whatnots, but it really develops into an interesting story.

Anime-wise, we have the venerable Kyoani (Kyoto Animation) as the anime production company, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, taking the chairs of director and series production are Ishihara Tatsuya and Yamamoto Hiroshi, who both served the same role for last year's AIR TV anime. In other words, the same top-leaders who worked on AIR will be working on this series as well. (BONUS: Even AIR TV's Yukito's voice actor, Ono Daisuke, will be appearing here as well ^^)

user posted image
I support Haruhi!

Oh oh! Haruhi's seiyuu will also happen to be Hirano Aya. Yes, the same Aya-chan (I can call her that because I'm older!) who played Mai in Itsudatte My Santa OVA! ^^

That's all the anime I'm interested in for the spring season. School Rumble should be interesting too, but it's probably not a good choice for various reasons.

Reika - March 16, 2006 04:59 AM (GMT)
Dunno what 3/4 of the listed series are about, must research.

I'll go with Strawberry Panic since all the other series I'm interested in are being taken up by stable groups.

Chachamaru - March 16, 2006 05:17 AM (GMT)
Let go with what Sushi-Y said. Her post is very convincing.

I Can't go wrong with her. I Think.

jopchan121 - March 16, 2006 06:22 AM (GMT)
in Newtype, Sushi's suggestion did catch my eye. I wouldn't mind seeing that as an AQS project^_^

Ijuki - March 16, 2006 06:47 AM (GMT)
I just want to put in my ... erm, point of view...

1) No one will get framed if a c&d letter comes, just read and confirm what it says
2) FOR GOD SAKE, DO SOMETHING ECCHI, I WANT FAP MATERIAL !

StormMage - March 16, 2006 06:47 AM (GMT)
Soul Link and Finalist are my choices

RedWolf - March 16, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Tokko is about get into anime form?

Sugoi!

It's sick and bloody in manga but one characters looks like a bad ass sexy Urumi Kanzaki that likes to flirt with the protagonist.

Paracelsus - March 16, 2006 09:49 AM (GMT)
Despite all that Higurashi fandom, I'm still for Tokko and Soul Link, but more for Soul Link.

ps Sushi-dono, about Higurashi no naku koroni....THE PLOT We need the plot, that is the thing that interests us the most <.<;;;

:EDIT:...I've found something, sound like a detective story.

kenichan - March 16, 2006 10:29 AM (GMT)
Wish I can go for Air Gear but definitely Sushi-Y-sama's gonna so oppose on the potential ero content it might have...but I like a blading-series >.>

I find her pick of choice interesting though...

Zap Electro - March 16, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
Oh awesome, there's another ARIA season?

I'd suggest that, but it already has 2 fansubbers.

Negima (manga) =/= ero content? lol I doubt she'd mind. Air Gear is one of the series I anticipate, but with Shinsen doing it we're better off leaving it to them.

It is not the manga you been reading about the school teacher who gets into that big bobbed teacher...

That is a ... YAOI GAY SERIE that is becoming anime :/ (check the site for more info...)

OH GOD NO.

I totally thought it was the manga, but anime. Guess that's a FAILED series. I guess I don't really have any other suggestions.

CRAPHEAD ME for not reading carefully other's posts -.-

Uh, dude. We just went through (at length) specifically why we were not going to do Gakuen Heaven.

I believe the term "yaoi" appeared more than once.

The two series you listed are also pretty popular, so they're not bad either.

As for Higurashi, for the lack of any single comprehensive page, I guess I can only offer you the thread on AnimeSuki:
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=26475

If you don't care about spoilers, then I guess you can open them up there, it might help you get a feel of the kind of story it has, I dunno. ^^;

Paracelsus - March 16, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
Well, both the anime and game threads gave me a boost on judging this anime. It looks interesting. Thumbs up. However, as you said:

QUOTE (Sushi-Y)
Hopefully the anime adaptation can successfully replicate the unique story and bring the characters and settings to life on television.

I look forward to your review on the first episodes, to know if they did portrait well dialogues and all from the game, or if they just did a random work.

Sox - March 17, 2006 06:58 AM (GMT)
tehehe… I have no idea of what is 95% of the anime mentioned…

But I second Redwolf on Tokkô choice… even if I'm not objective XD

Seems like not much persons read that serie…
Tokkô has 3 volumes out (2 tokkô main story + side story Phantom hunter), gore, horror, humor (?)… I guess it will be restricted because of the violence. Anyway the story is still mysterious, a lil teaser/spoiler? K:

A special police departement (Tokkô actually means "special attack units" in Japanese, obvious name for the serie neh?) chase and kill cannibal zombies and demons just for the pieces of… "a cube"?

A young policeman is thrown in this blood bath (Ranmaru Shindō)
user posted image
followed by his incestuous grateful oneechan (Saya Shindō)…
user posted image
Both lost their parents in a terrible "incident"…
Shindô dreams (is obsessed, better) of a (bloody) girl (Sakura Rokujō, mmm <3)
user posted image

He (thought he) never met her but they're connected by something… he will met her (again) no matter what. His destiny was written since his parents died… all the survivors of the "incident" own something to fight the evil forces, maybe just because they're alike them… he will joined Tokkô and let the "nice" entity get out of him..
user posted image
(yay he has big swords ^^)…
with the help Lt Suzuka of course

(death kiss? Or resurrection kiss?)

Damn! Redwolf's right this girl is a Urumi Kanzaki clone.
http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/244/ecchisuzuka9ul.png
Now to flirt with her… err don't be afraid if she… harm you (funny, ecchi, smart, exuberant, scary… mmm, cup size apart, it's a Juan-like -_-). I rate her below Sakura, maybe because it seems to be a dejà vu character but oh well we don't know much about her… oh and I l0ve her…
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9317/weeeepwn6yh.png
weapons <3<3<3<3 (I was serious… well her body isn't bad too neh? <_<)

Now the storyline is very weird, the ambiance dark and sad (SM also), orphans fighting demons gate, lots of sist/bro interactions, this is, story aside, the main social theme. The serie being stopped (lack of success? Lazy mangaka?) we will see it restarts (if the anime works/roxx). At least I wish the anime to bring answers…

In any case I just hope this won't be like GTO, good characters, good potential, and in the end a deceiving anime (ahh the art seems ruined again… doh!)

PS: for those who are interested AW released the 2 volumes, and hiraku No go too (+the 3rd side story volume, a good one to read too)… I know i know this is totally of topic…

RedWolf - March 18, 2006 07:34 AM (GMT)
That's his imouto or little sis.

jdennis007 - March 20, 2006 05:39 PM (GMT)
As someone who most likely will be working on this series I would just like to say the series I would like to do is... any of them because i"m just gonna hate it anyway(thats a fansubber joke). I personally dont care as long as it is entertaining, I just want people to like it because then it makes it all worthwhile.

aquastar831 - March 24, 2006 12:05 AM (GMT)
I have an idea for everyone who posted suggestions. Very soon the first episodes of a lot of these series will be airing very soon. If you happen to watch the first episode of (insert series name here), post a short synopsis and even screenshots would be nice, so we can get an idea of the series.

As of now, we're gradually catching up on To Heart 2 and have decided to sub the one episode OVA Memories Off #5 - Togireta Film.

We may be able to take one of these new series assuming that everyone that is on the fansub team can get each of the steps done in a reasonable amount of time.

Sushi-Y - April 3, 2006 03:02 AM (GMT)
Well, the first(?) episode of Suzumiya Haruni no Yuuzu has aired, what do I think?

10 thumbs up plus $50 for the first DVD whenever it comes out.

Before I start, I have to explain what kind of story Suzumiya Haruhi is about: It has comedy, action, adventure, (romance...?), but it doesn't fit under any combination of them. It's just "Haruhi".

In any case, on to a summary of EPISODE.... er, 0? 1? I'll call it 0.

In the beginning, we are greeted with the words "A Haruhi Suzumiya's Film" followed by an... opening song(?) sung by our... heroine(?) Asahina Mikuru.

At this point, those who have read the novel (like me) are probably already going "AH!!", and floored by uncontrollable laughters. While those who doesn't know anything about the series are probably going "What the hell is this? The quality looks like crap!"

The story then opens with a narrator describing our main character, the "fighting waitress (from the future)" Asahina Mikuru, and following her in her daily part time jobs in the market district.
user posted image

But then, it was revealed that Mikuru-chan actually has a secret duty: to protect a highschool boy named Koizumi Itsuki (who also happens to have superpowers) (ah, but he doesn't know that himself).
Ah, but then, our antagonist appears, the black magician Nagato Yuki (and on top of that, she's also an alien)!
user posted image
(Ignore the school uniform)

And so, the story continues on showing our heroine maintaining her daily life while fighting(?) against this powerful foe to protect Koizumi. Finally ending in a climax that pits Mikuru against Yuki in a final showdown on the school rooftop!
user posted image
(Ignore the yelling director Haruhi, oh, and the screaming teachers behind)

The battle ends with Yuki's defeat, and everyone lives happily ever after!
.
.
.
.
.
At this point, novel readers are probably on the verge of spasming from Kyoani's brilliance. Non-novel readers are probably going "...that was...huh? It's pretty funny, but... I don't get it, is this the anime?"

EXPLANATION!:
The movie, "Asahina Mikuru no Buken" (Asahina Mikuru's Adventure) was taken out of volume 2 of the novel. In the story, "Asahina Mikuru no Buken" was a movie made for the school fair by the SOS-dan members. Everything was written and directed by Haruhi, of course.

...But honestly, it was nothing but a bully fest against Mikuru-chan.

Oh yeah, after the movie ended, and we returned to "the real world", the true sakuga level (anime quality) of Kyoto Animation is proven once again. Rest assured, the crappy quality of the "movie" was all for that "amateur home movie" feel.
user posted imageuser posted image

Starting next episode, the REAL story begins (probably back to volume 1, where the characters and story will be properly introduced to the first-time viewers). Kyoani has already shown brilliant scripting, planning, and sakuga quality (as usual) all in this first episode. Honestly, I literally "can't wait" for the next episode. ^^

athos - April 3, 2006 03:07 AM (GMT)
I really, really hope that AQS will sub Suzumiya Haruni no Yuuzu. I've been spending half an hour to see if there's any group subbing this new series.

xstar - April 3, 2006 05:43 AM (GMT)
Because I don't seriously know hat any of those anime are about, I'll go with Sushi-Y's recommendation.

Paracelsus - April 3, 2006 08:16 AM (GMT)
A question for Sushi-Y:

A japanese guy told me that the manga is rather boring. I know that "de gustibus non disputandum est", but still I'd like to know your opinion.

And this because if the anime is an adaptation of the manga...

Well, the first episode (ep 00) was nice, but still I wanna make sure this serie completely wins

jdennis007 - April 3, 2006 03:37 PM (GMT)
Could someone provide a link to the torrent for it so we can see it. Since this is a likely candidate for us to do it would be nice if we could watch it and see, especially the sub team. As far as the manga being boring and stuff we are not doing the manga. There have been times where the manga and the anime dont click together, for instance I like the Pani Poni Dash anime but the manga I'm not thrilled about.

Well, the first episode (ep 00) was nice, but still I wanna make sure this serie completely wins

? Well, the manga is an adaptation of the novel, so we're still talking about the same thing in the end.

Besides, contents wise, the manga is still only about 2/3 of the way through volume 1 of the novel (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) with only 7 chapters out so far, while the SOS-dan's "Asahina Mikuru no Bouken" movie appeared in volume 2 (Suzumiya Haruhi no Tameiki).

As for the manga being boring, that could be for various reasons. First of all, trying to turn a novel into a manga is always a challenge, and it doesn't always work out so well (in fact, Haruhi had a manga back in 2004, but was canceled due to it fairing poorly. The current manga is actually the second attempt). Second, like I mentioned before, Haruhi isn't exactly your typical story. Sometimes things can be completely nonsensical and reads like a moe novel, but other times there can be mind boggingly heavy elements that touches on our existence and our minds.

I will admit that Kyoto Animation took a bold step by using Mikuru's movie as the first episode. This is probably the most "first-time watcher unfriendly" anime I have ever seen. For novel fans such as myself, it's wonderful, but I can imagine people who know nothing about this series watch the first 5 minutes and go "wtf is this? what a horrible anime" and then turn the channel/stop watching, never getting to know about the "truth" behind the episode.

The next episode will return us to the beginning, where the story and the characters will be properly introduced, for first-time viewers (those who still remain anyway), this is where the anime probably should've began.

Paracelsus - April 3, 2006 06:01 PM (GMT)
Seems fair enough. I'll wait for another episode. Thank you.
