Title: evangelion
Description: what really happened??
ebisu - April 10, 2006 12:40 AM (GMT)
guys, most of you have watched evangelion right??
well, i'm just a little bit confused about how the anime really ended. you see, i've watched its whole series and even its ova and yet...
i still don't understand what really happened in the ending. can someone please enlighten me? :(
Reika - April 10, 2006 02:03 PM (GMT)
oh my god...lol
poor soul, you were better off stopping at the Shinji dream sequence ending.
End of Evangelion was...well you know.
The real meaning behind Evangelion is hard to determine.
Well from what I recall it has two contradicting themes:
1. The need for other people.
2. The need for your own will.
Contradictory, yet they compliment each other.
Too complicated? Well everyone died (burst into LCL goo) and Rei/Lillith went against Gendo's plan and took Adam for herself and let Shinji decide what would happen to humanity (red earth ritual? forgot...) whether to bring back everyone which would still cause him more pain...or to simply float for eternity with all their consciousnesses (lol) united in one thought. Anyways Shinji decided he wanted to live~ and so he and Asuka were returned and "Instrumentality" was diverted. It is speculated that humanity would return from the LCL sea if they had the will to live, those who were "tired of living" or something and were satisfied being goo just remained as well...goo.
^_- ack NGE nerdery resurfacing.
Rei-sama <3

Yah, what she said.
Or you could just say "It was a load of crap."
>.>
You choose.
the_one092001 - April 11, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
The OVA ending was optional. The series actually ended after the anime and was intentionally left open for the viewer to decide. Whatever you want happens, but after they recieved so many complaints, they decided to make an OVA of one possible ending, and one that would conclusively end the series without any question. Killing the world's poopulation certainly does close some things.
Other endings include the EVA-R ending, which goes in place of the movies and picks up after ep 26. This is one of the larger and more well done fanon pieces, but the ending is still open to what you want to believe.
Trowa - April 12, 2006 04:27 AM (GMT)
Reika and the_one are both right. For the most part it's left to us viewers to decide, however what Reika said is the official explenation. Honestly I mix the two Shinji, Asuka and the maincast survive.
Who has heard of Evangilne Angelic Layer? It's a manga serise that expands on Shinji's dream sequence in ep. 25 I think.
Who'd like a second season of Eva??
the_one092001 - April 12, 2006 05:14 AM (GMT)
I would, but it'll probably never come. They were supposed to be doing a live action movie though, but it'll suck. The plug suits will make them look like power rangers.
Trowa - April 12, 2006 05:59 AM (GMT)
Yeah I know, though we can all hope it is actually good.
Please GOD let it be good. :P
ebisu - April 12, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)
...thanks guys. for the clearing that is.
ah!!! one more thing, do any of you know why their enemies are called angels??
also, the names of all the 13 "angels" are the names of the top angels of God.. why is it so??
the_one092001 - April 12, 2006 10:14 PM (GMT)
Okay, this is REALLY hard to explain, but the angels aren't aliens, like Ritsuko said, they're alternates to what Humans could have been. As such, they couldn't be named anything particularly evil, and it had to fit with the themes of the religious undertones. The highest angels were chosen presumably because they were the strongest and would be the greatest challenge to mankind. Also, they would be slightly more familiar to anyone else. The series isn't Christian in undertones, it's actually Jewish. Specifically, Kabbalism, which is why Lilith appears while there is only Adam and Eve in the Christian bible. This is also why they always interview a member of Kabbalism in the explainations in the manga.
Trowa - April 14, 2006 03:13 AM (GMT)
So who thinks Shinji and Asuka would make an interesting couple?? Personally I think they would. I mean their personalities perfectly balance each other out.One is hotheaded and rash the other is inedcicive and thinks to much.
Who here has read the first few chapters of Angelic Days in NewType USA? It shows the possiblity of it happening. hehe
Well let the debate begin. Enjoy :D
spasepeepole - April 14, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
shinji is way too french... asuka's too good for him... if he grew a pair of balls then maybe
the_one092001 - April 14, 2006 09:36 PM (GMT)
yeah. Watch ep 26, the part where Shinji's dreaming about different possibilities for his life. Specifically, the one where his mother is still alive, NERV probably doesn't exist, his father is not a psycho, and Asuka is his <gasp> childhood friend. It still doesn't work, even then. I've seen spineless characters before, but Shinji is the worst. He doesn't even see value in his life! What's up with that?
Trowa - April 15, 2006 02:22 AM (GMT)
I don't know about t that. They really don't go into much detail in ep.26 imo. I still think they balance each other.
the_one092001 - April 15, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
Balance is the wrong word. Compliment is a better one. Balance means that they are even, and thus balanced. Shinji isn't even close to being as extroverted as Asuka and vice versa. They do compliment each other though. But Shinji is usually portrayed as being between Rei and Asuka in terms of personality. Not as introverted as Rei, but not as extroverted as Asuka.
Also, has anyone taken the NGE character personality test?
Trowa - April 15, 2006 05:07 AM (GMT)
Yeah now that you meantion it that does sound better.
Nope not I.
the_one092001 - April 15, 2006 07:33 AM (GMT)
Ahhh!!! It's gone! The test is gone!!! Oh well, I got a 98% for Rei, then I took it agian and ended up with a perfect 100% for Rei!
Trowa - April 15, 2006 07:48 AM (GMT)
Hm is that a good thing or a bad thing? (the Rei part I mean)
the_one092001 - April 15, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
I dunno. I already knew the entire synopsis and character types before i took the test, but I had never seen the anime. I only got to see it now that it's on adult Swim. My parents would never let me buy or rent it because it would be a waste of time and money again, so I read up all I could on it on the internet and learned a lot without seeing the anime. Then i went to the bookstore and bought the manga. They didn't know becuase my grandpa took me to the bookstore on the way home from school... Anyway, Rei as a character concept is interesting, but she's also kinda boring...
Kojiro - April 15, 2006 11:47 PM (GMT)
Wait a minute. You were not supposed to be able to watch the anime. Great dude, now I feel really bad that I let you watch the movies at my grandma's apartment. :P . Anyway, I would like to point out that Eva does have some christian references. The leader of Seele, (I can't recall his name), is supposed to be the wandering Jew or Longinius, which is clearly Christian mythology.
the_one092001 - April 16, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
It's a mix, but predominantly Jewish. Lorenz Keel isn't confirmed to be the wandering Jew, it's speculation. I CAN watch anime. Just, I never get it myself. I can watch it on TV etc. I proabably could rent it, but they would give me questioning looks because they also think its just for kids.
Trowa - April 16, 2006 12:42 PM (GMT)
Bahh what do parents know about such things as anime & manga.

Trowa - April 17, 2006 02:29 AM (GMT)
Ok I going to say something that some of you are going to think is crazy, but here it is: I belive that Asuka actually cared for/loved Shinji.
Here's my reasons:
1st. In episode 11? when the acid spuing spider angel attacked Asuka was in the defensive position while Shinji was offence. Some may say that she did it to pay him back for saveing her in the volcano, but considering the pain she was in when the acid hit her Eva, well would you WILLINGLY suffer that much pain if you didn't care for someone??
2nd. She offered to kiss Shinji. Yeah I know she said she was bored but come on. Perhaps a female member (if there are any) can tell me if you would offer to kiss a guy you didn't at least like a little.
3rd. Her mental breakdown. I belive a large part of it was her feelings of inferiorite towards Shinji. She was extremely prideful yet Shinji was recieveing a bunch of priase at the end. He was also doing things that she seemed unable to do. All this affected her adversly.
It's also my opinion that it's her pride that keeps her from expressing her true feelings for him since she had made it a point to say she liked Kaji.
As a final tid bit I'll leave you with this Those who argue the most fercely with each other most likely care for each other the most.
Let the debate begin. Enjoy :D
the_one092001 - April 17, 2006 02:40 AM (GMT)
Ahem...
YOU'RE ONLY REALIZING THIS NOW!?!
Okay... maybe that was overreacting a bit, but I already suspected and basically assumed it already. Yes, Asuka and Shinji probably care for each other, but neither will admit it because Shinji is too afraid and probably couldn't believe that anyone would LOVE him and Asuka is too prideful. Rei, of course is not in the picture at all, so that only leaves Asuka and Shinji as the only two around.
Trowa - April 17, 2006 03:11 AM (GMT)
NO I've known this for about uhm........5 years now just thought I'd share with the class. Well of course Rie isn't in the picture it would just be waaaaaay to eki if Shinji and Rie to actually liked each other that way.
shivers at the idea of incest.
the_one092001 - April 17, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
Yeah, its almost an Oedipus complex since Rei was probably cloned from Yui... I don't know where I got that but that's what I assumed. Yeah, after I actually saw the anime/manga then I realized it, reading the synopsis doesn't tell you enough.
Trowa - April 17, 2006 03:38 AM (GMT)
Yeah it's kinda implied that she is Yui's clone. It's also implied that Yui's soul is in unit one. I've wondered if Asuka could pilot unit one. If it would feed off Shinji's feelings for her and let Asuka in.
the_one092001 - April 17, 2006 03:54 AM (GMT)
Probably not. It protects Shinji because it feels a need to, but it probably wouldn't feel the same for Asuka because it's not HER mother. But they all have the soul of one of the characters in them, or it is implied. Unit-00 has presumably Naoko Akagi's soul, becuase it tried to kill Rei and Gendo. She hated Rei and though Gendo was just using her. Unit-01 has Yui's soul, becuase it was absorbed during the test when she died. Unit-02 has Asuka's mother's soul, becuase she went insane after the test when her REAL soul and the part where she cared for Asuka was absorbed, leaving only the part that loved that doll behind.
Trowa - April 17, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
True however a mother can be swayed her childs feelings. Well it's just an idea I had for how Asuka could pilot unit 1.
the_one092001 - April 17, 2006 04:49 PM (GMT)
Yeah. It might have actually worked if Shinji realized that he does like Asuka. But we'll probably never find out becuase they pretty much finished off the official series.
Trowa - April 18, 2006 02:24 AM (GMT)
I know but it'd be nice if Gainax would come out with season 2 or something.
the_one092001 - April 18, 2006 03:04 AM (GMT)
It'd be a bit hard to come back after everyone died. It's only one ending, but it is pretty much the official one. A story about how Shinji and Asuka repopulate the human race would be boring because there would only be two characters! Or they could put it like 3000 years in the future when humans really have repopulated the Earth, but the Angels are still defeated so they would need to come up with somthing else. BUt going that far, they might as well make it just another series instead of connecting it to Evangelion.
Trowa - April 18, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
Eh I'm thinking that their are small pockets of survivers so there not alone. But yeah it'll never happen.
the_one092001 - April 18, 2006 06:27 AM (GMT)
How would there be survivors? Everyone died after they got absorbed. Except Asuka, who was in her Eva, and Shinji, who rejected the idea after being offered by the God/Rei the chance to accept or reject it. Unless those other people were in other Evas or something similar, they would have been absorbed.
Trowa - April 18, 2006 06:35 AM (GMT)
Hmm, didn't you say that those who had the will to live that they would reappear on earth? Well thats my thinking.
the_one092001 - April 18, 2006 06:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but I don't know. Rei was the driving factor, she is the one who really asked Shinji what he wanted. But a lot of people I know think that everyone died, and if they didn't then they're too scattered. The death of the God/Rei thing caused a lot of changes to the Earth, so it's kinda hard to rebuild back to the original human technological achievements, since the infrastructure to keep them going is gone.
Trowa - April 21, 2006 05:02 AM (GMT)
So it's back to the middle-ages. The human race survived the first one so we'd survive again.
It would make things interesting wouldn't it?
the_one092001 - April 21, 2006 09:38 PM (GMT)
NOt back to the middle ages, but close. The stuff is still there, but there is no one to actually USE the technology. But still...
the_one092001 - April 21, 2006 09:39 PM (GMT)
Not back to the middle ages, but close. The stuff is still there, but there is no one to actually USE the technology. But still...
Trowa - May 2, 2006 05:07 AM (GMT)
Do you think that Shinji and Rei would make a good couple??
The reason I ask is that it's a possiblity in the new manga Angelic Day's.
The one thing I dislike is that they keep the fact that Ritsuko is in love with Gendo. <_<
Ah well still can't wait for tthe first vol. to come out.
