Title: Your thoughts on the AIR dub
Description: (If you've seen it, too)

Zap Electro - July 9, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
Hey, just got back from metrocon in Tampa, and got a sneak preview at the AIR tv dub's first two episodes. Overall, very nice and I think you'll all enjoy it. Here are some details on each character:

Misuzu: Monica Rial's voice-over was the one I was worried about, since she and the Japanese VA sound different. Even so, after a couple of minutes you'll be right at home with this. It sounds great.

Haruko: This one just knocked the ball out of the park. Luci Christian's just perfect for the role. Nuff said.

Yukito: I forget the VA's name (Vic something) but it was pretty nice. It worked well, but wasn't fantastic.

Minagi: Pretty good.
Kanna: Again, pretty good. Both of these roles were just very well-casted.

Michiru: Sounds exactly like the original VA, and is great.

Potato: Weird to include this, but the Piko-man is good.

This last one is unofficial, but I talked to the dub director after the show about the Kanon cameos and cast. He said that it's unofficial, but those VAs were picked while the Kanon license was in mind. Meaning, if there's an ADV Kanon license, those are the VAs they want to cast. He mentioned that there's been a lot of talk and consideration with Kanon within the company, but didn't think that AIR was a test to see if they'll license it or not.

Im guessin that you are talking about Vic Mignogna. i cant believe he is going to play the role of Yukito. he sounds too.... immature for the role. if you ppl who are going to post after me dont know who who i am talking about, he did Edward Elric in FMA dubs. now compare that voice with Yukito, and you will see what i mean when i say that he doesnt sound right for the role.

Zap Electro - July 10, 2007 05:48 PM (GMT)
Wow, he played Ed in FMA? The voices sounded nothing alike, I'm suprised.

Voice Actors have to be able to do numerous voices to fit their roles. I hope a youtube link pops up soon...

EnpatsuShakuganLover - July 10, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
well, thats why i am saying that his voice would be expected to not fit Yukito at all. well, personally, i cant say anything until i can see the dubs for myself, so i cant criticize whether he fits the role or not.

I doubt it will for a little while, but I'd love to hear some of it again. There were maybe..10-15 people that were there, including the hosts (Luci Christian, the director, and that crazy redneck guy from ADV)

AIR episode 1 is actually up on Anime Network on Demand (i love Comcast sometimes). So here's what I think...

-Vic Mignogna as Yukito Kunisaki: Among all of the actors, he would be the one that I was most worried about. Honestly, his voice doesn't sound as mature as Diasuke-san's so it was really hard to adapt.
-Monica Rial as Misuzu Kamio: Very cute voice, perfect fit. BTW, i stood up when she first said "Gao"
-Luci Christian as Haruko Kamio:I should of guessed Luci Christian (Yukari-sensei from Azumanga Daioh) would be Haruko. She can really sell her roll as she can really switch gears between her serious and playful sides.
-Tiffany Grant as Potato: I love Potato; however, she sounds more of a dog in the English dubbing. I miss the cute, higher-pitched Piko
-Stephanie Wittels as Kano Kirishima: Good job by the newcomer. Wittels really captures a typical playful teen that Kano demonstrates.
-Kira Vincent-Davis as Minagi Tohno: I'm surprised how good Davis brings the mature aura of Minagi. Then again, I'm only used to hearing her as Osaka from Azumanga Daioh.
-Serena Varghese as Michiru: It took a while for Varghese's voice to grow on me since it's been a while since I last heard the unlimited amount of energy that Michiru has. Once I came to a conclusion, I loved her voice as it provides the necessary foil to Minagi.

The episode overall makes me want to watch the series all over again. I pretty much fell in love with the art and music all over again.

Must...check...youtube...

i should watch it right now then. thx for the heads up.

EDIT

watched it... and i have to say that all of the girls are annoying and out of character for me. Yukito is okay. Vic Mignogna does a great job. well, this is from some1 who hates when the original is spoiled by dubbing in general anyways.

DJcream - July 27, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
It's been a while since I last heard the original japanese voices; in fact, I refused to watch it since it may taint my opinions on the dubs.

I honestly thinks the girls did a good job on the anime, with the worst being prolly Yukito and Potato.

EnpatsuShakuganLover - July 27, 2007 12:29 AM (GMT)
rewatch the subbed. you will change your mind. the girls sound MUCH MUCH older than they actually should.

AsunaNegi - July 27, 2007 02:13 AM (GMT)
ESL, keep in mind that nearly all Japanese Dubs are just as cheesy as the English Dubs. We don't exactly speak colloquial japanese, so we can't tell.

EnpatsuShakuganLover - July 27, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
not true. we think american cartoons dont sound silly or cheesy. do you think that the voices used in series like the Simpsons or Family Guy sounds silly or cheesy? no, i dont think so. if you dont know personally as to what japanese animes sound like by being born into japanese life, you cant say stuff like that.

AsunaNegi - July 27, 2007 02:38 PM (GMT)
ESL, they do sound silly. Family Guy and Simpsons voice do sound silly. That's part of why they're funny. and ESL, stop acting like you're holier than us. It's really tiring.

Ijuki - August 2, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
Just a question (and no, I haven't seen the dubs):

Do the voice actors even try to be the char (lol, simplified english) at all? Many american dubs are like "dry"...

Oh !@#*. I guess there's no point in learning other languages then. Better tell Jaceryl and Shini to stop wasting their time and learn a useful language, like sign language.

Ahh, damnit. I *&#@ing hate deaf people. :(

I will also say this: I blame a large majority of dubbing faults on the directors, specifically in games.

when did i say anything against learning japanese? i am just saying that dont bag on how "weird" or cheesy japanese supposedly sounds like. people like AN who do not know enough japanese cant be the judge of that.

Oh don't worry about me. I wasn't born into western life so I wouldn't know what an english is.
