Title: POKEMON!
Description: The Thread of Continuous Memories
NegiStar - September 26, 2007 06:14 PM (GMT)
YO~!
I thought, "Why don't we have this thread!?".
This thread is basically all about:
-Our great times watching it when we were young.
-Collecting the cards and the amazing trades we've made.
-How cool/terrible the anime series was.
-Out thoughts and ideas of where the series is going.
-Personal experiences meeting any of the anime Artists (i.e. Ken Sugimori and others)
cypherzero - September 26, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
What is the meaning of life?
to catch em' all!
-Ash
I would have remained faithful if it only had a continuous story line, now its just *insert generic pokemon battle here* :/
cartoon network was already showing the episodes randomly, so sad... so sad...
jeomaxxters - September 26, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Heh, I was late into starting the anime back then, and the first I saw was the Ghastly, Haunter and Gengar episode.
Ah, Pokemon Anime... RIP. Ash hasn't grown up, eh?
And I still wonder what the people in Pokemon eat for protein... *shudder*
Pokemon Adventures manga is superior. It has the game characters, not Ash.

thats becuz you are older than us, shao....
but other than that.... i really liked the korean dubs of pokemon. and koreans called pokemon, "pocket monsters". not "pokemon".
Daisuke CP9 - September 27, 2007 01:33 AM (GMT)
Pokemon was one of my childhood favorites...but then again...the plot is getting rhetorical, even in Diamond and Pearl.
shaoron - September 27, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
@daisuke
and that's because...

yet another vgcats reference... <_<
EDIT
Pokemon literally means "pocket monster", ESL...

You do realize that is what Pokeman means pocket monsters?
NegiStar - September 27, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
I think we all should've realized that by now..O.O;
I was the KING of trading Pkmn cards in my time.
I remember in Gr.6-7, I had a Gr.4 possy who would get me all the latest cards and trade em to me for next to nothing.
Actually I had one bad experience. In Gr.4, I traded my Charizard from the first series set for an electebuzz and electrode non-holo. Everybody (my friends) told me "DON'T DO IT! CALL TRADE BACKS!" and I did call trade backs but I didn't end up getting it back, even after I told the lunch lady :P. I even teared up haha.
Oh man, the dramas of trading the cards. IT WAS AWESOME!
shaoron - September 27, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
here's some
"pokemin bashing" on how overated this franchise is...
granted.. i did play the games... but after the original ones (red, blue, green, yellow) the rest got boring...
and let's not start with that annoying team rocket chant... <_<
Balthazars - September 27, 2007 02:30 AM (GMT)
I thoroughly enjoyed the original series of Pokemon when it first came out in Australia - I was still in middle school, and thought it was refreshing, entertaining light-hearted fun.
I also remember the original game coming out on Gameboy (played, of course, emulated on my school laptop) shortly after that too. I thought it was actually one of the better RPG's out there at the time, and it was good fun... I never collected all of them, but I finished the game and thought the whole story with Team Rocket and such was handled pretty well!
Also, I've read the original manga story, and I gotta say, the art is pretty decent and the story is a bit more mature. It's good value and entertaining (the manga pikachu is hilarious - he's a moody little rodent!)

Yeah very true. The art was amazing! Actually, I got into pokemon because my cousin had played Blue Version on his Gameboy and I began to envy him and wanted my own copy! I was about 10yrs old then.
I remember we even used to play make-belief games and summon our own pokemons in real life. Oh man we were creative..O.O;
CandycaneMang - September 27, 2007 02:45 AM (GMT)
I remember buying Japanese cards in a mall nearby my house. The Japanese cards say Pocket Monsters on them. It is called Pokemon because there was already a brand with a very similar name to Pocket Monsters (Monsters in a Pocket).
I recently found all of my old Pokemon cards stashed away in a box in my basement, that brings back memories...
jeomaxxters - September 27, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
@shao:
That chant actually haunts me due to the... Rather uncanny resemblance of the names of those Team Rocket guys to my real name... Annoys the hell out of me when people call me "Pokemon". >_>
windy-day - September 27, 2007 10:24 AM (GMT)
are they still making episodes?

duh..... <_<
but it was never called that in korea. when i first came here in the 5th grade, i was like, "what the hell is a pokemon?" then i just realized that it was one of many examples that the Americans ruining the title of an anime/manga series.
shaoron - September 27, 2007 02:18 PM (GMT)
and yet another "wrong buzzer" for ESL!
granted, Pocket Monster is the actual name but Japan actually uses the term "pokemon" as well...
also...
the reason why the english version doesn't use "Pocket Monster" is because of a possible conflict with a toy line known as
Monster in my Pocketif i'm not mistaken.. it was the Nintendo Japan who gave the name pokemon (thou i do not have concrete proof)
and even if it's not, "Pokemon" is the official name for the ENTIRE franchise, Japan or not.
seriously, ESL... get the facts straight first before shooting off random things. it only makes you look bad.
EDIT
i found my evidence...
just 2 seconds is enough, ESL
it's basically just a shortened version of the original
(credit goes to my thesis mate)

@windy:
Yes, they are. Surprising? Not in the least.
Daisuke CP9 - September 27, 2007 11:05 PM (GMT)
Ash seems to be more of a hypocrite ala Suzaku. The guy claims "I'm gonna catch em ell1!!11"
But all this brat does is travel randomly, letting Pokemon go, even when he finds a damn good one, and meet random people they forget an episode later.

Ahahahaha so true. it really hurt me when I found out Misty left his team.
Didn't we ALL wish they would end up together?!
AND WHY DIDN'T BROCK'S EYES EVER OPEN!?!?!!!!
I mean, one could say, "Kaede from negima never opened her eyes as well" but she actually did SOME times.
Brock however.... :(

kinda like how Inui's eyes have never being exposed for the longest time until Seigaku's first match against Rikkai in PoT...

Better to summary: why doesn't Ash just pimp the girls he travels with and take advantage with the development than going "I wuv you Pikachu!!" ? I mean, Misty, Dawn, May...seven years from now

You've know just tempted me to write a gag fic of Brock pimping all of the 400+ girls he's hit on and them liking big daddy's menu
Thanks a lot.

Ash? ASH!?
SCREW ASH!
As far as I'm concerned, Ash does not exist.
Red is much more... how to put this... not lame.
In fact, everybody in the manga is way better than their anime equivalent if they have one. Ruby, for instance, is awesome. His anime version? I don't want to think about it.
Pokemon as an anime is almost as bad as BEAST WARS was for a Transformers fan.

I guess you have a point to it.
Hmm..actually I agree with you on that completely. Manga characters are much more original and unique in comparion to the anime-adaptations. (I'm basing this off of Negima's characters right now in my mind)
You know what sort of ticked me off about the series? How much drama there was between Pikachu and Ash; like that one ep. where Pikachu was thinking of leaving Ash to live with the other Pikachus..oh man that was dramatic.. <_<

Jeez, I dont think Pikachu needed to waste all that drama, and I wonder why Ash decided to go soap opera and tried to push Pikachu at that...

I guess they wanted excitement form the audience. If you though THAT was dramatic, have you seen the FIRST MOVIE?! Oh man, when all the pokemon turn into stone..that'd utterly depressing!
Some of my friends even cried when that happened..Dang the Pokmon Company for making us feel sympathy for Pikachu.. *shaking fist* haha
I feel we're bashing the series quite a bit. How about the stuff we LIKED about the series! :P

I liked Gold and Silver's feel and music in game terms, especially it's version of Kanto. A lot of nostalgia came into me then. Plus, the night and day effect woowed me as a kid.

Oh man and the SHINNING POKEMON WERE INTRODUCED! That was SO AWESOME!
I still remember I had the most shinning out of all my friends:
Red Gyarados (Given)
Dark Blue Poliwhirl (Created a Aqua Green Poliwrath and Navy Blue Politoed)
Purple Male Nidoran which becamse a blue Nidoking
Gold colour Ursaring (From my bro haha)
Memorizing the names was brutal. I even got most of them memorized until the LATEST one: Diamond and Pearl...oh man.
Every noticed how they evolved the Titles of the Games from general "Red, blue, yellow, green" to "gold, Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, Crystal, etc." ?
What's next?! Jade and...ZIRKONIA!
Boo - October 3, 2007 02:53 AM (GMT)
I had 200+ gameplay hours in Gold and never found a shiny.
I had 200+ gameplay hours in Ruby and never found a shiny.
I have 100+ gameplay hours in Diamond and never found a shiny.
I wounder if the problem is in the cartriges or in me.... O_o
But yeah, G/S was the best came in comparison to its predecessor. RBY were TERRIBLE, really, and GSC not just doubled the size of the map and story, but it also fixed all problems and made the battle system a million times deeper.
R/S/E weren't so great if compared to G/S/C, I had the feeling the map got smaller, but there was a great advance in the graphics...
D/P was practically the same thing as R/S/E.Of course, the wi-fi mode and the amount of secrets and items is huge, but still, it's not as revolutionary as GSC was in comparison to RBY...

Yeah very true. And you tend to see the repeats of types of pokemon.
Liek RBY had the Birds, (Pidgeot, Pigeotto, etc) and then RSE had the newer ver. of birds. They repeat a lot.
Oh btw, I also got a SHINNING PIKACHU in Emerald Ver.! in the safari zone XD haha

Speaking of shiny Pokemon~
CandycaneMang - October 3, 2007 03:26 AM (GMT)
I was just about to reference that...but I got a shiny Darkrai after much saving and reloading.
At first I loved G/S, but then it got annoying trying to catch certain pokemon when I could only get them at a certain time of day.

lol, copypasta. Of course that isn't true... Or at least I think is isn't.
Got a shining Hoothoot on my first playthrough, and a shining Sentret... I don't remember anything else. >.>
And my favorite games are Gold and Silver, I never liked Crystal. Oh, and I'm still waiting for my Electric Yellow and GSC remakes... lol.
Varrel - October 3, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
I want the third version for the Diamond/Pearl generation to be released already so that they stop keeping Dawn's manga version name a secret.
So far she's just been going by her family name, but since "Lucas" is Diamond and "Barry" is Pearl, she has to be the third version.
It's probably Opal, because of Giratana. Since Giratana is equal to Dialga and Palkia in terms of base stats, as well as being part dragon and having a unique attack. Not to mention it has a gemstone name like them, Girasol, which is a fire opal named after a latin phrase referring to the DAWN and dusk, girare sol (the turning of the sun).
It could be the third aspect of Arceus. If Dialga is the avatar of time that started Sinnoh's history and Palkia is the avatar of space that created Sinnoh's geography, than surely Giratana is the avatar of essence or spirit that maintains the balance of life and death in Sinnoh, fitting with its partial ghost typing and its location in those mysterious tomb like ruins.
