Title: Rebuild of Evangelion
Description: DVD is out, and so are the Fansubs!

the_one092001 - May 24, 2008 12:03 AM (GMT)
After many months of anticipation, the DVD version of Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 is now out.

In the new version, the sniper duel against Ramiel is the clear climax of the movie, since it's the only one aside from the first battle against Sachiel that gets the same amount of screen time.

The new CG effects make everything seem bigger and help reinforce the epic scale of just how powerful the Evas are in comparison to the massive amounts of traditional military equipment that fails to solve the problem. The Tokyo-3 defenses seem to have undergone quite an upgrade compared to previously, thanks to the CG, and the battle against Ramiel is much more important plot-wise than before.

Out of the Angels shown, the only one that shows any major differences is Ramiel itself, which instead of staying in a single octahedron form shape-shifts into different geometric forms to use different abilities. The rest are pretty much the same, although Shamsel has a few changes. Sachiel is exactly the same as before. However, all of the Angel numbers have been pushed back by one starting with Sachiel, meaning that while Sachiel was formerly the Third Angel, it is now the Fourth Angel in Rebuild. Lilith and Adam are not identfied by their numbers within the movie, so it is not known whether this new Angel appears before or after them.

Everything is just freakin' amazing. I hope this will lead me to like Evangelion, whereas I really disliked its TV Ending.

the_one092001 - May 24, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
It's supposed to have a completely new ending, since Hideki Anno is done flipping the finger to fans who demanded an ending and is ready to finally make a REAL ending.

AsunaNegi - May 24, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
I notice that Ema is in the preview for the 2nd movie.

kano - May 24, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
LOL - I have the full DVD set of the old version (my first full anime DVD set way back a long time ago) - yeah the ending was always a big letdown :P
I got the 2nd version of the end but that wasn't much better.
I never bothered to get the 3rd ending (mainly coz I wasn't sure if it is was the same as the 2nd one I got a long time ago) - now a 4th - lol

AsunaNegi - May 24, 2008 12:47 AM (GMT)
Something I always noticed, but 4chan finally put it together for me.

Actually, on that note, the new Unit-06 is supposed to come down from the MOON! Fuyutsuki's secret base?

Tmoo - May 24, 2008 04:18 PM (GMT)
downloaded this last night, i want to watch but my cousin's over and she's hogging the desktop ;_; (laptop doesn't have space)

AsunaNegi - May 24, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
It's a sexy movie. You'll like it.

Tmoo - May 25, 2008 03:48 AM (GMT)
when does 2.0 come out? i'm itching to see unit 06.

also, ED theme <3

the_one092001 - May 25, 2008 04:06 AM (GMT)
2.0 is supposed to come out later this year, which means that we'll probably see the fansubs in early 2009 or so since it has to come out on DVD before any of the groups will bother to sub it since they don't do camera recordings.

AsunaNegi - May 25, 2008 04:25 AM (GMT)
Well, I dunno about the cam thing. The subs I have are .ass files retimed for the DVD release from a cam sub. I had to mux them myself.

Tmoo - May 25, 2008 09:45 AM (GMT)
i enjoyed this movie. it felt more cohesive and shinji's not as much of an emo wimp as he was in the series. also, Ramiel is awesome. his death was even more epic with all the -oops spoiler-

:P

another year until i see 2.0. i am sad :<

I never saw any subs for the cams, it was hard to even find one of the cams. A lot of the major groups stayed away due to quality and understanding issues working with a low quality-at-best release. Some were desperate enough to do it, but most refrained and waited for the DVD, and now there are lots of groups with their own sub track.

AsunaNegi - May 25, 2008 07:58 PM (GMT)
I saw quite a few cam subs on TT not that long ago >_>. But yeah, they were all groups I never heard of, or were small ones most don't care about.

Tmoo - May 25, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
i might actually buy the R2 DVD for this (action replay on ps2 works for region codes right? :o) along with byosoku 5cm.

Well ... AR on my R4 PS2 plays R2 ... if that answers your question? :)
(I got it just to play all my R2 DVD's I bought when I went to the USA for work a couple of times)

AsunaNegi - May 25, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
I thought about buying this DVD, but I got the ISO so I'm good :D

kano - May 25, 2008 11:10 PM (GMT)
Don't know about the word 'good' ... :P

Tmoo - May 25, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
i wonder if that means i can play R2 PS2 games as well..

AsunaNegi - May 26, 2008 12:56 AM (GMT)
ARs and GSs remove the Region Lock, iirc, because you essentially hotswap things.

Now I know what the_one's avie means... :P

I watched the TV series about a week ago, the ending (along with End of Evangelion) really left a bad after taste, And now just watched Evangelion 1.11 for the 7th time.
It partially removed some of the bad taste left of from TV series.. because you were, most of the time, hanging your mouth open bobbing like a fish at how FREAKIN' AWESOME it is :D

The new CG versions of the EVAs are so rich in detail it can be rightly called divine, the sequences where the buildings rise from the ground... Just beautiful...

This really rightly rewarded those die-hard fans who waited for like 14 years?

Now, Im reluctant to watch the cam version of 2.0, or should I just wait for its DVD/BlueRay release a few months away?

Simply breathtaking...

kano - November 30, 2009 10:06 AM (GMT)
OK, so I have the Evangelion DVD set (had it for a very long time) and yes the ending was the thing that I always hated about it ... (well ... both of the endings I have)

So you're saying there is now a way better ending ... hmm ... (I'm not gonna buy it again - last time it cost me way more than $100)
So does much of the actual story change or just some of the ending?

Actually, I didin't say anything about the ending, thats why I said:

Well, Evangelion 1.11 is like the first 8 6 Episodes of the TV series compressed to 100+minutes, but as I have preached in my previous post, with better Graphics for the EVAs and the city buildings of Tokyo-3 which look really stunning(Im basing this on 720p, it'll probably be even better in 1080p).
The tiny bits that were changed from the original are like some support characters getting demoted. And some of the scenes got their uber-awesomness amped up for climactic purposes, there's nothing like firing a Positron cannon using an entire country's worth of power.

The ending, that is yet to be seen as there are still EVA's 3.0 then Final and hope Hideaki Anno doesnt do a heel face turn by then.

2.0's most impacting plot deviation from the original TV series is
QUOTE (spoiler)
The introduction of a whole new character, Mari

And now, I cant seem to help it, Im gonna go WTH and dive through the cam ver. of 2.0
Another thing:
ANN is confusing me, in the Cast entries for Neon Genesis Evangelion they put Asuka Langley Sohryu, but the entries in EVA 2.0 it says Asuka Langley Shikinami? why would the same character have different names?

On a side note:
I've always been a fan of Megumi Hayashibara, and her roles as Ayanami Rei and Ikari Yui really left me in cloud 9 again... The last time I admired her voice so much that it hurts was her role as Lime in Saber Marionette J...

From what I've read Anno-tachi changed Asuka's last name from Sohryu to Shikinami for the movies.

SagittaMagica - November 30, 2009 01:07 PM (GMT)
Why though? did her parents remarried someone else or something :P

Well, I heard therapy has side-effects like this... :)

currently watching 2.0 BTW :)

Strange_One - November 30, 2009 01:16 PM (GMT)
*Strange_One shrugs

They wanted to do a remake because they thought all other anime was rather crap and stagnant even compared to Eva.

still doesn't the Shikinami though.

QUOTE (SagittaMagica @ Nov 30 2009, 08:07 AM)
Why though?

Not sure SM but I don't like it.

Supposedly This rebuild is what Anno-tachi truely wanted Eva to be origanally. But because of bugetary and technological reasons they where limited to the original TV series. This is supposed toi be closer to there origanl vision.

Ok just watched You Are (Not) Alone. I didn't like some of the stuff they cut from the movie. Like how exactly Toji learned Shinji was the pilot of unit one. Nor do I like how they redid how Shinji was asked to give Rei her new security card. Although I will admit the fight against the sixth Angel was more dramatic.

And no matter how many times I see it, the scene with Pen Pen comeing out of the bath is still funny.

SagittaMagica - December 1, 2009 05:15 AM (GMT)
I agree, and the Asuka version of "Pen-Pen in the bath is good too :yahoo:

lanciferis14 - December 1, 2009 10:21 AM (GMT)
The CG rendered Eva's were really stunning, makes me forget about the crap ending. I'm still waiting for the 2.0 movie to be released, since I don't like watching cams.

Trowa - December 2, 2009 03:41 AM (GMT)
Considering it took two years for the first movie to make it over to the US, I'm not getting my hopes up it'll be out any time soon.

Although that may be a product of Funimation somehow getting the rights to the movies instead of ADV. So it's possible that the second movie will come out faster.

SagittaMagica - May 26, 2010 11:00 AM (GMT)
Wikipedia listed the DVD/Blu-Ray release date of 2.0 to be on May 26, 2010 (That is the date of this post).

But i've seen rips already out 2 days ago.
But basing on the comments on some, most of the subs are speed-sh!t-su*k of quality...
Im waiting on a more "reputable" group for subs on this...

the_one092001 - May 27, 2010 05:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I've been seeing the raws uploaded for a while. From what I saw it came out just about on time at least for me since I'm almost exactly 24 hours behind Japanese time.

I'm actually surprised at the amount of time it's taking. K-On and large-fanbase anime such as Bleach and Naruto can have their episodes out within hours after the first raws go up. Dattebayo has the process down like clockwork, and Coalguys seems to do the same for K-On!! and Mazui for Angel Beats. The release date wasn't exactly secret, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Evangelion 2.0 is the most anticipated Blu-Ray release of the year.

Ah well, I expect there will be subs of decent quality up within a few days, or a week at most.

lanciferis14 - May 31, 2010 06:10 AM (GMT)
Finally watched it, very disturbing (especially when Unit 01 dismantles Unit 03) but oh so entertaining.

Hmmm, its surprising that Asuka's role is a bit on the little side in this movie, but oh well, at least she'll return for the next one.

Its official, Mari is awesome, I really love it when she goes feral when she activated "The Beast".

I can't stand Shinji for being a pussy, but I can forgive him for showing us a crowning moment of awesome for saving Rei at the end.

Oh great massive gay Kaworu Nagisa is here.
SagittaMagica - June 3, 2010 12:35 PM (GMT)
So, I went and got UTW-THORA's 1080p release, making Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22 the very first 1080p video I watched on my new 20" monitor.

It was just so awesome, I thought 720p was good... but damn!

Anyways, Mari is SUGOI!, Rei is OMGWTFBBQ, Asuka is MOE!, Katsugari can be KAWAII!, Gendo is COOL!, F*CK OFF KAORU!!, and Shinji is still, for the love of all the angels he killed, holding that tape player in an era where humans have gundam-like weapons yet have not managed to invent I-PODs or something like that :bash: geez...

Kota - June 3, 2010 01:58 PM (GMT)
Sugoi Monogatari, Aniki.

Do we really need gratuitous Japanese to speak?

The movie was pretty good. Kinda sad they removed a lot of Asuka's backstory and personality. I hope Shinikami or whatever and the original Asuka are different characters (and appears in 3).

I'm really thinking the series of events is a loop, and Kaworu is the only person that's "outside" it.

Anyway it happens, though, I'm enjoying this more than I enjoyed the original series.

the_one092001 - June 3, 2010 07:36 PM (GMT)
If you look closely though, in many ways their technology does not seem to be as advanced as ours in terms of everyday conveniences. Notice how Asuka's phone is what would today be considered a relatively simple one, without a touch screen or full keyboard. Most of the cars also don't seem like what you would see five years in the future, at least given how cars look nowadays. Unless there's some sort of huge retro fad going on, and those UN warships appear to be of relatively old make as well.

In fact, most of the technology aside from NERV is either at or behind what we have today. Of course, I imagine the Second Impact would set some things behind though so I suppose it is partly justified. Even NERV's weaponry seems to be an odd mix of the old and new; they have positron rifles, but for some reason insist on using conventional firearms rather than more advanced Metal Storm-type weapons that would be more advanced, not like the firearms ever do anything.

I would lol heartily though if this was some sort of Higurashi-esque loop with Kaworu playing the part of Rika. Also, inb4 no homo bro (at the very end).

I finally finished torrenting it this morning. I swear Time Warner is throttling my download speeds because every time I run a torrent, my regular browsing speed slows to a crawl. My torrents don't even run that fast; Evangelion 2.22 averaged around 100 kb/s but it still killed my speed. So I could only really torrent it at night or while I was at class.

I like the 1080p version, but the major drawback is that it has a bit of a lag time when I try to skip around since it's such a huge and relatively taxing file to run (relative to the 720p version). For a guy like me that skips around a LOT, that tends to be a noticeable restriction, but not enough to make me replace it with the 720p version.

kano - June 3, 2010 09:26 PM (GMT)
Re: torrents/web browsing - not upload speed related?

Kota - June 3, 2010 11:36 PM (GMT)
The technology they use is roughly on-par with the 90s, which is when the series was originally released. They've just kept the series in the same time period.
