Title: Live Action Adaptations
Description: Jubilation or Horror?

Strange_One - September 8, 2008 08:22 PM (GMT)
I'm sure a great many of you know about the incoming DBZ movie

user posted imageuser posted image

But it seems there are a number of live actions heading our way thanks to the US and having too much time and money on their hands in the movie industry

Warner Bros., Appian Way Productions and Leonardo DiCaprio are making not one but two Akira movies (never liked Akira anyways)
Warner Bros. Tobey Maguire and Lawrence Kasdan are making Robotech (never heard of it)
Dreamworks and Spielberg are making Ghost in the Shell (I didn't like the movies. Oh well. Maybe they'll make some real firing and top quality shirow guns)
And most recently Fox and Irwin Stoff are making a Cowboy Bebop Movie (Undecided. my opinion on the series (and movie) was 'meh'. The rumors of Keanu Reeves as Spike does make me  tho)

Well. If they don't do horribly I hope they place an emphasis on drawing manga and anime closer to mainstream. 8)

:xd: :xd: :xd: :xd: hahaha sorry but thats true ? ... also that piccolo looks like legacy of kain ... haha :lmao: :lmao:

Esperman - September 8, 2008 09:30 PM (GMT)
I knew about the DBZ movie, but eh, they just do NOT look like the characters...

Especially Piccolo... (I thought he was supposed to be green and have little antennae things...)

Pfft, I vote that they make a live action version of Negima in America and star Hillary Duff or Miley Ray Cyrus as Kagurazaka or something...

Give Tyra Banks the role of Tatsumiya... (Except Tyra Banks isn't nearly as endowed as Tatsumiya...)

ledah - September 8, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
akira... mmm hey you forgot the tekken movie too

shaoron - September 9, 2008 12:27 AM (GMT)
it's gonna be so bad.. it's good :P

Balthazars - September 9, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
Well, come on, could there really be any way to make real people look like the characters in DBZ? I don't think so... not unless you want to get heavy on the prosthetics!

There's also a new live-action Street Fighter movie in the mix, and there should still be that Evangelion live-action movie in the mix too, right?

Ah... well, usually I try to avoid live-action versions of anime etc, usually because Americans do an absolute hash trying to convert Japanese stuff for the US market... and most video games just don't translate too well to the big-screen.

/(-_-)\'----Ehhh... - September 9, 2008 01:40 AM (GMT)
Wasn't Goku like 10 during the time of Dragon Ball? Why did he age so fast?

Kroni - September 9, 2008 02:22 AM (GMT)
I'm actually looking forward to the live action MPD Psycho, I imagine it would be a lot like the movie Se7en.

mokoi - September 9, 2008 03:32 AM (GMT)
Like kroni said MPD psycho live action i'm waiting for.

jdennis007 - September 9, 2008 04:14 PM (GMT)
It is just another attempt by hollywood studios to cash in on the latest trend. Just for fun see which one is the easiest to do and odds are that that one is the most likely one that they will mess up.

windy-day - September 9, 2008 05:01 PM (GMT)
hmm, akira live action...

i've never really had a live action of something i really like made, except negima, but then again i don't even watch the anime versions of negima so it didn't really affect me...

however akira i first saw as a film, and i really liked it and still do

a more faithful adaptation to the books? if they say so. just don't tell me they're westernising the characters (even though they almost certainly will...)

oh well, i'll go and see it, but i know it won't be as good. (!@#*, that's their marketing plan... ok, then i won't go and see it)

Esperman - September 9, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
Aren't live actions of animes actually somewhat common in Japan?

DBZ, Ghost in a Shell, and such are all the first time I've ever heard of the US trying to make live action adaptations of animes...

Heh, I can just see them making some sort of Gundam live action adaptation soon...

Also, can you imagine what it'd be like if they made a live action version of Pokemon?

*Shudders at the thought of a badly CG'd Pikachu...*

Though it would be pretty amusing to find out who'd they'd cast for Ash...

OMG!!!!! :xd:

After reading that, I had in my head an image of an adult in a pikachu suit.
Ya'know, like the longchu/pikadorf/pikamen from SSBB moveset swapping.

Can't imagine the horribleness when pokemon come out of pokeballs, lmao
And the attacks, especially the physical ones.... :xd:
USE BITE!

Esperman - September 9, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
They'll probably make the Pokemon computer generated or something... (Either way, it'll look REALLY bad...)

But yeah, it would be so bad that I'd literally go see it just so I can shed a few pounds laughing at the movie... (Yes, I would be laughing that hard...)

During Dragon Ball, he was 14, Bulma thought he was around 10. (I read the manga at my school library)

I doubt there would be a Live Action Gundam, they would probably make it completely CG, like MS IGLOO (Which wasn't half-bad).

Worse yet, what happens if they decided to make a Live Action Yu-Gi-Oh

Esperman - September 9, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
^XD!!!

I totally forgot about Yu-Gi-Oh...

Heh, now, if they crossed over the universes of Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon in an American made live action movie with terrible CG'ing, then all hell would break loose...

thousand-mistress - September 9, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
Now, a live-action Akira might not be to bad, it might be good, actually.
But DBZ?!?! Eww. I mean, that's just......stupid. D:

Esperman - September 9, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
^The only reason why it sounds so bad is because what the heck would it cover? (That and the characters actually could look a lot more loyal to the series...)

I know DBZ (And the later sequels...) was notorious for carrying on their arcs (At least the TV-series...), so that's why I'm doubtful about the movie... (Lest us not forget the Namek arc where Goku and Freiza were fighting, they have five minutes left to get off the planet before it exploded, and it ended up lasting at least ten eps...)

If the movie's just going to be about Goku finding out his origin, then the movie could easily cover the first 26 eps or something, yet in reality, the movie only covered a few days worth of "history" DBZ time...

I'd say the movie has potential (Even if it doesn't, then it could pull out a few laughs...), but so far, does the director know what he wants to do with the adaptation?

Sure, you can dazzle us or makes us puke with pics, but that doesn't cover the story...

The live action Negima series is a perfect example...

They give us the pics of the characters and the actresses, and we automatically assumed it was going to suck more than anything that could be made out of Negima...

After the series ended, people were thinking "besides the fact that it wasn't loyal to the manga, the series was actually pretty decent"...

Vice versa can be said about movies that people may be looking forward to... (It looks all sparkly, but then the movie ends up sucking...)

Kai - September 9, 2008 11:42 PM (GMT)
Cowboy Bebop would prob be okay too, since there's nothing to westernise in that.

Esperman - September 9, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
What would be another series that could potentially be ruined by a Western adaptation? (Live action of course...)

Heh, I'd think so many people would groan if they made a live action Westernization of that "Suzumiya Haruhi" series... (Never seen it, but I know it's popular and I know its fans love the series...)

That and maybe Lucky Star... (Another series that has got its fans going "gaga" over it...)

Maybe I should take the time to watch them...

Heh, though I'd love to see them make an Azumanga Daiou westernization... (Just for the lulz and also because I've actually seen that series and read the manga, of course...)

Actually, I think I got it...

If DBZ can be considered one of the most popular old school animes that was imported to the US, then what's not to stop some crazed Naruto fan from making a live action westernization of the series? (I mean, it's definitely popular enough...)

thousand-mistress - September 10, 2008 12:19 AM (GMT)
This is gonna bomb. I mean, look at the hair, for pete's sake......If they put Bulma in it, atleast stay faithful to the series and put a blue/green wig on her!

Invader G'rr - September 10, 2008 05:18 AM (GMT)
Don't forget about Voltron and Thundercats! :heh:

there is a serious issue with the rational to attempting to make live action adaptions of anything. its bad engouch that they are making video game adaptions, anime adaptions arent going to be any better.

here is the problem: the people who decide to adapt these things arent fans of the shows themselves, yes, they'll say so on TV but who can believe that 6 months later when we see some real *&#@ed up verson of the thing.

the other problem is the relative difference in poltical harping that games and hollywood get. hollywood literally lives on the idea of getting bitch slapped by the minorty groups to make the movie more acceptable to Mrs. soccermom who wants a MA15+ game toned down to G rating movie, even thought her halfwit son is playing the orginal MA15 game at full blow.

so many games so far have been royaly *&#@ed, and anime is no expection... okay, we got lucky on transformers since that show really was designed for americans to begin with (translatable plot, marketing and all), but DBZ, and about a dozen really popular anime on the cards arent suitable for the adaption.

lets take us back to when evangelion was on the cards. by the time that thing died, the ideas we heard hollywood think of would've sunk the entire grene of anime to a low that only the church believes in.

ill be back later on and when im not drunk to argue this more.

Which is why Negima would REALLY be ruined if it was westernized...

Man, I can imagine them hiring twins for the Narutakis parts yet the girls they hire are fully developed, look like they're over 18, and act like their in the popular group or something... (Pretty much everything the Narutaki's are not...)

The only thing that may make them like the Narutakis is that they're twins...

A little bit off topic, but a little bit on, what about that Speed Racer movie? I've never watched it, but was it any good in other people's eyes?
(By that I mean, did the actors act out the personalities as in the series, not follow the plot)

I haven't seen the movie either, but from the previews, it looks like it compares to how the Negima manga is to the second series...

AKA, completely stand-alone except that they just use the characters' names...

Honestly, it didn't really look like the original Speed Racer storyline...

The movie seemed to be about a "Speed" that that just wanted to race and show off his skills while the original Speed raced for the professional aspects and wanted to earn some sort of title in that professional league...

Also, considering the original Speed Racer takes place on places that are actually real, I'd say the movie kinda deviated from that considering it looked futuristic... (Almost as if they got zapped into a video game and raced around in that world or something...)

I'd say that NightHawk Imac's comment about directors not being a fan or knowing anything about the series they adapt can apply to the Speed Racer movie...

Kinda like how the DBZ live action will turn out... (And even more complicated considering the director will have to find a way to adapt around the notorious DBZ anime dragging method...)

AKA, the dragging method that would turn five minutes of DBZ time into 10+ eps or something...

Invader G'rr - September 10, 2008 10:27 PM (GMT)
G'rr watched Speed Racer and in G'rr's honest opinion, the cast were able to stay true to their original characters fairly well.
:kakashi:

I once said before the movie came out and i saw a preview "you know what, this looks like fast and the furious meets willy wonka'

its like tried to make speed racer more badass (it wasn't, the guy's *&#@ing car could do anything) and forgot the point of the show

Which is why I fear for DBZ...

The guy playing Piccolo looks evil, and though Piccolo once antagonized Goku at one point, he eventually becomes good, for the remainder of the series...

Though I can't say this adaptation's Piccolo will adapt the same storyline...

It's like them making a Negima westernization and having McDowell's actress be evil for the entire movie... (And it not even covering the McDowell arc...)

Heck, just for the fun of it, I can see them making Yukihiro an antagonistic character as well... (And maybe even the cheerleader trio...)

Kinda like how I envisioned Yukihiro (And Kakizaki...) to turn out when I started to read the manga... (Where they act all haughty and try to dictate they're the best in the class and bully the other girls into thinking so...)

But of course, that didn't happen... (Although the westernization could end up very differently...)

jdennis007 - September 11, 2008 05:18 PM (GMT)
It depends if Sam Raimi is directing any of them they might be at least halfway decent because he is a fan of the genre (he did Spiderman).

Esperman - September 11, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
Sam Raimi likes DBZ? (Eh, didn't know that...)

Well, yeah, if he was the director, then I wouldn't be as worried, but I don't think he is... (He's probably busy with Spiderman 4...)

on application, i demand the director take a verbal test of the show, 100 questions muipitle choice about the series before they wish to rape into something only recongisable by DNA Identication

Esperman - September 11, 2008 05:42 PM (GMT)
Heck, even if they didn't want to go that far, I'd say they should at least let the original creator take part in the adaptation...

That would reduce the amount of screw-ups the movie produces...

Rai - September 11, 2008 11:27 PM (GMT)
Quick question: Do the creators of the series themselves give permission for westernization, or is it the company that publishes/air them?

I could see Akira-sama going WTF!? in Japanese when he sees Piccolo.
However, that pictures doesn't necessarily mean that's how he is depicted in the movie, like Chachamaru in the Pre-Show of the Negima Drama, she didn't have her antennaes (I love Engrish) yet. That's probably just to display the actor.
