Title: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Description: ... grade school magical girl ...

Oddly, the drawing style of the starting dream and the OP reminded me of Bakemonogatari.
(though I guess SHAFT is the blame for that)

Hmm - are they going anti-Japanese? (Western) Or just saying that in the future even Japan will overcome it's sexist extremes?
Madoka's mother works and father stays home.

Character drawing is strangely LQ yet the backgrounds are quite good.
Though, the surrealistic backgrounds were pretty crap also.

Hopefully this show wont have any 8th grade fanservice ... Ep1 didn't (except Madoka's magical transformation in the OP)

Certainly getting the Nanoha vibe from the first episode - will Kyubey be Yuuno and Homura be Fate? :)

Not much known from the first Epsiode yet ...

Madoka lives in the normal world (I guess the future from the background styles used)
She has a dream that includes magic and the girl from the dream (Homura) is the transfer student into her class that following day.
During scool, Homura warns Madoka to not change if she cares for her friends and family.
But after school Madoka and her friend Sayaka help, in a minor way, to save Kyubey from the evil? witch? Homura who leaves them alone once they come across another Mahou Shoujo called Mami.

Watching this toward the end was like watching a higher resolution Monty Python ep to me, and watching Python always made me think "so this is what tripping on acid looks like....", lol.

shaoron - January 10, 2011 02:04 AM (GMT)
wait... hold on....

You're comparing this show....
a moe induced mahou shoujo...
to MONTY PYTHON!?

are you high by any chance, scorpio?

No, no, no, only the bits where "reality" started to waver, I found it very reminiscent to the psychedelic style of say something like say the Yellow Submarine and other late 60's works all of which I(rightly or wrongly) strongly associate with Terry Gilliam, Python's cartoonist.

shaoron - January 10, 2011 06:49 AM (GMT)
come on, shows like Yellow Submarine and Most of the python sketches (and ALL of Terry's animations) were made on drugs (no matter what people say).

i need to watch this show...

...

Actually better examples of that (shows that seem like they were written on drugs) would have to be old kids shows of that era.
Like: "The Magic Roundabout", "Mr Squiggle" and others (I watched when I was young ... loooong ago)

However, I didn't see any comparison in this show at all ... just surrealistic backgrounds to suggest parts were magical or dream sequences.

Thats like 90% of what I was saying, this(just like Python) has bits that are what I imagine tripping on acid looks like.
So Hamura isn't a witch after all.
Just a 'bad' good guy? :P

Again, a lot of the indoor backgrounds reminded me of Bakemonogatari.

This episode had some RPG elements to it - destroying the Boss with experience and reward gains (and all the related stuff to that)

More magical crap backgrounds - they really don't suit well in my opinion.
No real fanservice again. Good.

Though Hitomi's misunderstanding was rather amusing.

Ep 2 basically explains how the world works.

Still no idea where the story is actually going though.

Maybe Junko is a witch? Just guessing :)

Edit: oh yeah - unlimited gun works was pretty good also

Twilit Libra - January 21, 2011 01:26 AM (GMT)
:jawdrop:

:sniffle:

Can I just say...ow?

Now I get why they waited until this ep to show the ending.

jopchan121 - January 21, 2011 05:50 AM (GMT)
"Ah......nuts"

....damn clownface doggy.(That is all I will say)

Mami is still epic.>_>

kano - January 21, 2011 12:06 PM (GMT)
Ep 3: Hmm ... the fact that they didn't clearly show 'what' happened makes it all the worse ...

And she even had a bad start to being a Mahou Shoujo ...

More Nanoha vibe in there too ... Madoka having a very powerful magic potential ...

kano - February 1, 2011 11:35 AM (GMT)
Well the end of Ep 3 also had me thinking that Kyubey was evil.
Not evil in the usual sense, but just due to his complete indifference.

But the beginning of Ep 4 enforced that completely in my opinion.

This has also got way darker with Ep 4 - I'm certainly not expecting any light hearted side to the story at all any more ...

scorpiowolf - February 11, 2011 07:37 AM (GMT)
6 ep in and I gotta say this is the most awesomely f**ked up show I've seen in awhile, lol. MephistoQB once again shows at best he's as bad as the witches they fight. There hasn't been anyone both that cute and that evil as ambiguously as QB in a awhile either.

scorpiowolf - February 15, 2011 01:59 AM (GMT)
Gruesome....

Keitaro - February 26, 2011 02:13 PM (GMT)
watched ep 8

Now I can say that the EVIL one is Kyubei and the GOOD one is Homura!
And I really got the feeling that witches came from puella magicas and I was right. Kyubei makes them to puella magicas and after some time they will then turn to witches when their jewels get tainted
Twilit Libra - February 26, 2011 08:30 PM (GMT)
You know what? So far, Mami's been the luckiest person in this anime. And that scares me.

Neko_Arc01 - February 26, 2011 11:57 PM (GMT)
It seems Kyuubee hate infected me before I could even watch the first episode, (not that I actually DO hate the critter, having only seen one episode,) but as soon as I saw the opening, I thought about pacts with the devil, and this pick (possible spoiler, be warned,) that I saw over on Danbooru...

Now to watch a few more episodes...

It hilarious how true that line might turn out to be, but still how much PTSD does Madoka have to not suspect QB of trying to pull a fast one, if someone keeps trying to convince me of something (even if they add "I'm just saying" or "no pressure" to the end of it) despite all the successive lvls of "F****k!!!" that happen week in and out I'm gonna be more then a little suspicious, regardless of how much talent you tell me I supposedly have, lol.

kano - March 5, 2011 02:36 AM (GMT)
So I watched 5,6,7,8,9 yesterday/today ... and the story (for the most part) just keeps getting darker ...

Gotta say, if this wasn't grade school magical girls, this would probably be at the top of my favourite list this season.
Plenty of story and plenty of unexpected turns and twist happening.

Actually, I've decided that my comparing it to Nanoha is, to some extent, an insult to this show.
It's way more serious and way less predictable and has plenty of story to go with it.

That train discussion in Ep 8 was a shock also.

scorpiowolf - March 5, 2011 03:30 AM (GMT)
^ Well the constant troll that is the OP kinda gives you passing thoughts of that, for me it invoked comparisons to CCS or Kobato both of which were kinda dojikko mahou shoujo(more the latter then the former).

scorpiowolf - March 11, 2011 08:37 AM (GMT)
Wow an "Endless 8" ep, the time travel was a given but they're so different from Homura' original timeline I didn't recognize them. Madoka with confidence! Homura with glasses!! Mami with a head!!! Who are these people, lol?

kano - March 11, 2011 08:49 AM (GMT)
Ah you get that crappy version with adverts left in :P
I think I'll wait this week - I don't enjoy downloading adverts.

Wavehawk - March 12, 2011 10:56 AM (GMT)
I've only read the manga so far, and my reaction is OMFGWTH*SCRREAMS* "MAMIIIII~~!!!! NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sayo's Guardian - March 12, 2011 01:03 PM (GMT)
When this show aired I only watched part of the first episode and it really didnt grab my attention.

However after seeing the popularity of the show go up I decided to watch it.

I watched the first 9 episodes at once and the 10th later.

Wow! For an anime original this series is dark and amazing, when I saw the illustrations in Megami Magazine several months ago I didnt pay much attention.

I`ll be watching this series to the end with great anticipation.

The manga is based off the anime, the anime is an original story making this even better.

Wavehawk - March 13, 2011 10:02 AM (GMT)
I find most of the people who aren't interested in this anime haven't seen past ep.2...and still think it's just another magical girl series.

kano - March 13, 2011 01:12 PM (GMT)
Wow - yes - Ep 10 - explanation of Homura ... (yeah I waited for another group to release)

Yet another unexpected but very well designed turn of events.
How shy Homura became cold Homura.

So Ep 1-9 was simply most of one single loop - thus I suspect we will see the actual end of the final loop (which I assume 1-9 is part of) in the final episodes - which I can see the death of Homura being the only option that makes sense ... unless they come up with something else :)

final episodes - which I can see the death of Homura being the only option that makes sense ... unless they come up with something else :)

Theories I posted on another forum SPOILER WARNING:
0.) In the last episode, Homura has to go back and do it all over again ad infinitum (trying to save Madoka et al and failing miserably) along with speech about Love and Hope and how she'll never give up. Even worse: It's revealed that Homura's time loop is part of QB's plan: perpetual energy generation from the same girls.

1.) They're going to release a 1-hour TV special wherein viewers can phone or email in to choose the ending they want: a) Homura dies and Madoka becomes the one stuck in a time loop to save her, or B) Madoka dies and Homura says 'screw this' and becomes a Witch.

2.) Release a movie with improved graphics, new fights, movie-original Puella Magi (including an evil Madoka clone), and a Bolivian Army Ending for both Madoka and Homura complete with Love and Hope theme...

3.) End the TV series with Madoka NEVER becoming a Magical Girl in this timeline> This leads to Homura deciding to live her last moments with Madoka before Walpurgis Night destroys the world uncontested---at which point time resets again and Homura and Madoka never become magical girls, but never meet each other (or even know the other exists) either. And all the time angsting that they feel they're lacking someone in their lives...

Personally, the way I'd go is similar to idea 0, but with a twist. Eventually, the final episode with end Homura having to repeat the timeline once again. However, this time, she'll finally see the error that she's been making in the current timeline and the one beforehand: that she let the incidents of the third timeline (i.e. the one where the other girls kill each other) get the worse of her and realize that really can't stop her Higurashi situation as long as she tries to do everything alone while acting cold to the other girls.

Hence my perfect idea of the final scene: a shot of Homura starting the next timeline (one in which Madoka and Sayaka have yet to become mahou shoujos). However, this time around, she's back to her meganekko self, with her trying to befriend Madoka and Sayaka without acting all cold to them.
kano - March 15, 2011 03:23 AM (GMT)
Well - actually, none of them are spoilers since no one (without inside information) knows what will happen.

The 'spoilers' are (like mine) ideas about what we think could happen or what you'd like to happen.

One of the few shows that people can't spoil :) Yay! :D

I guess the Madoka interest stemmed from

Interest in Madoka came long before it was even airing because of the all-star team in charge of it. Knowing the author made the "twist" predictable. He even said as much himself on Twitter that he was having a hard time trying to hide it given his reputation.

The twist bringing interest just caught the curiosity of some people who initially passed it over.

Twist?
Hmm - not really a twist as such - more a case of the show started down a dark path at the end Ep 3 and has kept going down that path ever since.
Yeah I guess the fact that Mami lost was a twist ... but really that wasn't what changed my opinion of it.

I didn't pass it over either :) I created this thread.
It just wasn't until after Ep 4 that I was interested in it as anything more than anime filler
(i.e. what do I watch today? Nothing new. OK anime filler :D)

Also, my comment "I guess the Madoka interest stemmed from ..." was referring to the major rise in interest (and the QB references all over the place)

This hasn't actually had any new shows since 3/11 since ep 10 was actually out on the 11th
(I think Ep 10 aired early morning on the 11th)

lanciferis14 - April 11, 2011 01:57 AM (GMT)
According to news I read Madoka will resume on April 21, rejoice magical girl Kyubey tragedy beheading Madoka lovers.

Yeah I watch Madoka, I was just too lazy to post then.

Sayo's Guardian - April 14, 2011 07:03 PM (GMT)
I knew about the air date already and by all means laziness to talk about it is kind of reasonable considering how I`m sure that many people did not expect the series to be that good.
Heck I watched 9 episodes at once and then the 10th so I really couldnt talk about the stuff during the episodes.

I look forward to the final 2 episodes.

jopchan121 - April 14, 2011 10:22 PM (GMT)
I think we are gonna see either a very dark end, or a very TROLL end. Either way, I'll enjoy the ride(And all of the stuff I'm nabbing of this series.)

lanciferis14 - April 15, 2011 02:38 AM (GMT)
Yeah I can only think of 6 possible endings:

1. Homura dies, Madoka survives
2. Homura dies, Madoka survives but its Madoka this time who want to redo
3. All of them dies
4. A miracle will happen somehow that will lead to a good end
5. Madoka still dies but Homura accepts her death once and for all
6. Madoka dies again, Homura repeats again

kano - April 22, 2011 03:11 AM (GMT)
... and then suddenly both 11 and 12 were released ...

Getting now, so I still don't know about the ending yet ...

lanciferis14 - April 22, 2011 09:04 AM (GMT)
...

I don't know how to react about the ending, I have complicated feelings about it, I can't sort it out. So they've gone to the Miracle/Deus Ex Machina route huh?

...

Sorry I'll be back with my real feelings later, let me hear others reaction first.

Sayo's Guardian - April 22, 2011 10:52 AM (GMT)
Applause.

Thank you for such a wonderful show.

scorpiowolf - April 22, 2011 01:16 PM (GMT)
I figured it'd be that cliche, but it worked. Homu Homu, was pretty badass with her Unlimited Rocket Launcher Works, too bad it didn't work, lol.
Too bad for Sakuya tho, she lose both her place as Madoka's bff and the guy she loved, also why was she the only one who didn't resurrect? I wonder if its because she self-destructed rather than ran of of MP. Also with all the fan art and 4koma I've seen during the break I was really hoping to see the human forms of the witches we've seen thus far, especially the uber-witch.
