Let's start a new thread. This will be for typesetting tips and tools of the trade.

Here's my piece of knowledge. When typesetting, you sometimes run out of bubble space on one line and then you're forced to break up the word onto two seperate lines. An example would be:

The person went to the sup-
ermarket to buy things.

When this occurs, you MUST have the hyphen to signify that the two parts are actually one word.

Post your own typesetting tips.

Cause i finally did some work today, I'll see what i noticed:

1. What lamb said is right, sometimes you gotta use a hyphen. But make sure you put it in a part of the word so that the reader can automatically connect what the two-part word really is.

(wrong)ie. The person went to the s-
upermarket to buy things.

(right)ie. The person went to the super-
market to buy things.

It doesnt necessarily have to be between the obvious syllables like that but keep it understandable. And at that, dont use too many hyphens for a single word. And with that, try to use minimal hyphens in a single bubble and altogether too.

2. Fonts are an important part of editing. While it would be nice to use lots of fonts, at the very least use a manga/comics font. Some of which are, wild words, anime ace, zud juice, and manga temple. The latter three are free fonts, google it.

If you can, try to coordinate fonts to go with the original japanese fonts from the raw. Like try to keep a pattern with the original raws, if bold fancy letters come up often, use one font. If you see small, sloppy fonts, use a different font. With that, it helps to try to use a similar looking font as the original one on the raw. That goes along with trying to keep the scanlation as close as possible to the original.

3. Along with using hyphens to fit text into the bubbles, altering font sizes is a big part of it. If possible, try to keep all text a moderate amount away from the border of the bubble. So change word positions along with font sizes to keep it along those parameters.

With odd shaped bubbles, you have the choice of using hyphens (as little as possible) or shrinking the text to fit. Its the editor's choice in this situation, so just go with your gut instinct on this one.

Ill give more stuff if i think of it, maybe add some pictures too if i get to be not lazy.

Leveling guide by khell (it is not a requirement for test takers):

Part 1: Converting images to Grayscale.

This is very important because a Grayscale image will be smaller compared to an RGB image.

Open the file. Manga scans should be GRAYSCALE. This image is RGB

When the discard colour information window comes up choose “OK”

Part 2: Levelling an image.

We have to make sure that the image is levelled, meaning Black is pure black and White is pure white. Manga is basically black ink on paper the grays are tones.

Bring out the eye dropper tool.

Click it on any black patch.

The blacks should be #000000 or close to it.

Be careful not to over level an image, making it too dark or too light. Be mindful of small details and tones because when you make an image darker they’ll just turn pure or close to black and if you make it too light they’ll just disappear altogether.

The stuff to watch out for this image are:

Images don’t have the same levels but you usually place the markers around these parts.

TIP: It’s a good idea to press CTRL + Z a couple of times after levelling the image, going before and after to watch out for other details.

Here’s the full image after levelling.

Definitely needs to be pinned smile.gif
Done.

Changed the title too - since it's for all editing (not just typesetting)

Like after you had scanned, there are parts that are darker than usual due to improper placement of the paper. I just wanna learn to edit, i'm super newbie in these stuff. lol

@shielder:
That would be solved by what we call leveling. Scroll up for khell's guide for that.

Nothing against khell's guides, but for anyone that wants to learn editing, kalendel's guide has to be number one for it, when in combination with a few of the other good editing guides out there.

http://www.unblessed.net/guide/index.html
http://www.ruinevil.com/rawr/editguide/
http://www.n-u-l-l.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://www.raspberryheaven.net/~cv/manga_guide/index.htm
http://www.questie.com/manga/ScanEditGuide/

They're in the order of what I think is the most useful, but all of them do better in some areas than others. If I learned editing with only those editing guides, I'm sure anyone else can too.
