Okay, after hearing so much hype about this particular anime for over a year, I decided to see what's so great about. Girls with psychic powers, using them to obliterate anything in their paths. Sounds great. The gore and blood was a nice breath of fresh air, breaking the monotonous rhthym of harem anime that's been flooding the anime world lately. I thought I'd found a diamond in the rough.
Then, it spiraled into an all harem plot scheme. Sure the violence and gore was still there, but it was overly plastered over by all the usual overused harem plots: Boy is a nice with no redeeming qualities but get all the girls. Boy and girl knew each other in the past and, miraculously, meet again against impossible odds! Boy has a 'tortured' past, even though it's made bigger than it really is (IE, Boy knows the meaning of true pain because...he once stubbed his toe and mommy wasn't there to kiss it. There's no way the traumatic events of the girl's past can measure up to that!) The entire split personality thing was something that I saw coming since ep 2. Hell, I even guessed how she may have gotten it and came 99.9% correct. Only part I didn't guess was Kouta's indirect part in it. I honestly want to know, why is Kouta in this anime anyway? Really? I think Elfen Lied would've been A LOT more interesting if he'd been erased from it. Nyuu/Lucy would've eventually gone crazy on their own. Kouta's sister still would've died. Fast foward so many years, Lucy escapes...Elfen Lied becomes far more interesting from that point on. Elfen Lied, not for those who thought it'll be a great thriller anime. Which, from most of the reviews I've read, I thought was a thriller anime. But let me warned you, after the first fifteen mintues of ep 1, EL isn't even really worth watching afterwards. Just imagine Love Hina, with a girl with horns and psychic powers. Add a bit more blood and violence, a few more puppy dogs, and you get Elfen Lied. |

I actually happen to like this anime a lot. And I really don't see how you can compare this to Love Hina. A much more accurate comparison would be Ai Yori Aoshi.

sorry for reviving a particularly old thread. just had to cuz im watching it now.
*casts Raise Dead* im still in episode 6 but i feel like i have to put down some of my thoughts into words. if i had to put it into one word, Elfen Lied would have to be lost. i cant understand why the writer shifts from one theme to another and back again..from blood and gore, to drama comedy romance and a bit of ecchi too..the producers are trying to cover too many genres for one anime and the result got botched. i havent finished watching it yet.. im hoping the anime will make me take back this statement. and that creepy opening song...heeee... sends chills down places i didnt know i had. i read a bit of the manga.. never managed to finish it not because i was too scary or what but because they werent done scanlating it when i was looking for it.. but i think ill hunt it down now since ive seen the anime. |

once again, lamb saves the day.
oh yeah.. saw you in the illuminati forums and the boards in mangaupdates. ive joined there as well.. and i have no doubts you're part of anidb too, i suppose. when i did look for the manga (that was ages ago) they werent done yet.. finished the anime.. and i can safely say, it actually made sense in the end.. im taking back my earlier statement.. the anime isnt botched. i still find the intro song creepy as heck though. |

i liked the romance/harem aspects of it actually... this series was intense, i couldnt stop watching it after the first ep, i tried checking out the manga, but unfortunately, the art was not nearly as good as i thought it would be

@lamb
when i said you were part of anidb, i meant as a member..or something. ahh.. let's drop that. @Puyo actually i read around a few chapters of the manga before i watched the anime..i only had up to ch4 and yeah, the art wasnt that good, but im not very particular about art... i fancy myself an amateur writer so i always go for the story. but im glad the art in the anime was considerably improved. Nyu? you liked the romance parts of the series? if you love a good romance story, read Koi Kaze- warning you beforehand though- the art's not that good. |

I don't know what your complaining about boogerboy, elfen lied is the perfect anime, it has so many genre's and they still work excellent together, I think your just looking for something to critasize about it, why don't you just sit back and enjoy it. Gore, nudity, romance, comedy, elfenlied's got it all, it's an anime lovers dream, so quit ya bitchin and lighten up.

yeah, wherever it's being scanned... (only read vols 1-2)
the anime is quite faithful to the manga as it happens, except for cutting out yuka's friend, until episode 12 where it goes off into it's own original conclusion. in the manga (this is all from reviews, haven't actually read it) the story continues after SPOILER mariko's death, which doesn't kill kurama in the manga version, but he goes mad, starts living on the beach and doesn't recognise nana END OF SPOILER so that's quite weird. there are a lot of very dedicated fans of this series, you'll find, as i discovered. my friend became an uncle recently to twin girls.... called lucy and nana.... *gulps at school life ahead for nana.... |

there is a hell load of difference between the manga and the anime. one crucial thing is Lucy having her horns cut.
but yeah... a group called Oishii-Manga is doing the manga scanlation. |

You ought to read the manga.
The anime covers only roughly a third of the manga and had a filler ending. I loved the anime. I watched it years ago and to this day it remains my faveourite anime. |

Because they're there.
Elfen Lied is a mediocre anime with terrible dubs on both sides of the Pacific. It's typically only popular amongst entry-level weeaboos and people that want to seem edgy. I have to admit, though, the scene with the dog? *&#@ing amazing. |

I was angry and crying when I first saw that scene.
Mediocre, I havent seen the series in years(I do own Adv`s DVD`s) so I may have a different view of it if I were to watch it again. The scene with the dog was my first "rule-breaker" scene in anime. It was something I thought I would never see. Its a shame the OVA episode never got dubbed. Have any of you read the manga to its entirety? I was crying so much. |

Ah but they didn't break the rules ...
It's done by children ... ... ... so that's OK? ... ... ... Even Kouta's sister falls under the same category. Lucy was still a child then Kota's just trying to get a reaction ... (as was the point of that scene) |

NOOOO!!!
Children are supposed to represent innocense. Thats why those scenes when Lucy was younger were shocking. For those who`ve read the manga, what do u guys think of diaper girl(I think her name was Nozomi, I cant remember)? |
