Draining of the Life Source

There are those who wish to escape the adult world, the world where growing up is a must for every human being. Those lucky ones that are found by a Lost Child are taken to Never Never Land, where they never have to grow up.

But what is it that makes this so? What lets time stand still? Before no one knew the answers, but they accepted the fact that they were given the free gift of eternal youth. Who couldn't be happy to not have to grow up, not have to worry about adult things?

But now they know all the answers, thanks to an accidental find.

----------

The miners dug deeper and deeper into the earth of Neverpeak Mountain. What were they digging for? Mostly ores that could be used around the Home Underground for whatever it was needed for. None of the miners, equipped with their tortoise shell helmets and picks, expected to find what they did.

They were getting far into the mountain, sloping down into the earth. This made it harder to push ore-filled carts, hard enough to where more than the usual had to break from their mining to help push it to the entrance of the mine. They begged the head boy to level the path, but he had a hunch that more ores were deeper down, so they had no choice but to live with it.

The smallest lad, a boy probably eight or so when he was rescued, grew exceptionally tired. He had been a bit under the weather, and though Queen Baisley wished for him to stay in the Home Underground he was determined to do his part. He kept hitting hard rock that caused his pick to bounce back at him, and it angered him to no end. It just kept happening, and finally he cried out in rage and struck the ground. His pickaxe went all the way through, which surprised him because the ground had been so hard before. His gloved hands tried to break the pickaxe free from the ground, but to no avail. One of the older boys went to help him, and finally they broke free.

The elder boy returned to his work, and the lad examined where his axe had gotten stuck. To his surprise a faint glow came from the hole in the ground, and he began to claw at it. The hole broke away, and even after his hands returned to his person if kept falling down into what seemed like a hollow cavern. He stood, but before he knew it he was falling. He screamed along the way, grunting as he landed on a hard surface and began to slide down a slope. His screams echoed around him, and the glow he had seen grew brighter and brighter. He shut his eyes tight, shielding his face with his arms. He slowed moments after his fall, and finally came to a stop. He opened his eyes and peered in between his arms, and gasped at what he saw. He stood, his jaw seeming to be unhinged.

There was a pool of crystal clear water, nearly as thick as maple syrup when he touched it. It stretched around a tree, ancient looking, but glowing with all white features. Vines hanging from its branches swooped low and into the pool, and its trunk disappeared into its depths, no sign of roots of any kind.

He was absolutely astonished by what he saw. He heard the others calling from above, and he hollered back, calling them down. Soon the head boy and a few others were sliding along, meeting him at the bottom of the slope. They mocked his own expression, their jaws dropping at what they saw. They each let their bare fingers touch the liquid around the tree, with it rolling off their skin and leaving them absolutely dry. They grinned at each other and hurried back to the Home Underground, leaving a couple boys to watch the hole.

They returned with Queen Baisley, who was just as shocked as they were at their find. She hurried to her brother, and together they gathered the leaders of the fairies and the Indians. They showed them of this find, and the Fairy King rejoiced.

"Why such celebration?" Baisley asked, and she translated what the Fairy King spoke next, for he spoke in the fairies' native tongue. "We have a legend that speaks of an ancient tree buried in the heart of Never Land... It is what keeps youth around, and without it, everyone would age... this liquid right here... is the key. It keeps us from aging, and from catching serious disease... It pours constantly from an enlarged pore in the tree, a small amount the thickness of normal water... It pours about a gallon of this each year, adding on about a square inch each year.."

The King flew across the water, his golden robes flowing behind him leaving a slight trail of fairy dust. He looked around the tree, circling and circling it, until he found the source. It was a small branch that protruded from the side of the tree's trunk, with a hole. He said, "this is where it comes from, but it should be coming quicker than it is... This is not good."

"How not good?" The Indian chief piped, his voice low and rumbling.

"If it stops flowing," Baisley translated as the King returned to the party. "We will begin to age." He turned his attention to Baisley and spoke only to her, and her brows rose. "You mean.. That could be why my brother and I aged slightly over the years? 'Cause it's not flowing as much as it should?" He nodded, and she looked to the King, standing beside her.

"This is not good," he said. The King's attention turned to the Fairy King. "How can we stop it?"

"...We don't know. For all we know, there is nothing we can do," Baisley translated.

"We must figure out way," the Chief suggested. "We all try to find way, but we must not speak of this place." He nodded, his arms resting on his round belly.

Queen Baisley nodded. "We have to keep quiet. We don't want anyone tainting this, if it truly is what the legend speaks of."

And with that... they returned, sealing off the mine. The Fairy King ordered two of his own to guard the entrance from intruders, and the King and Queen of Never Never Land ordered their miners to begin a new tunnel, this time heading upwards into the mountain to keep from hitting it again. And they all vowed secrecy, and left to their respective homes.
