Observing the comte's reaction, Henry smiled. Interesting. It seemed Josephine's act of being imprisoned had a bit of truth. At the very least, the comte did not want her going into town. The reasons for that could be many. . .

"Indeed. The effort ought to go to more profitable crimes, at the very least," Henry said with a glint in his eye. Feeling that had come out a bit too strong, he added, "The comte no doubt has better things to spend his time on. And Signorina di Corti has expressed her constant trial and consternation in reigning you in, Mademoiselle St Just."

He cleared his throat again and said, shifting and noticing the comte had still not seated himself. The man planned to keep him waiting indefinitely. Well, that was fair enough, in a way, though Henry wasn't exactly sure which comment had provoked this little revenge.

"Perhaps it is worth considering putting all these--how did you call it, Comte? Well-meaning, harmless citizens to work?" citizens being pronounced with apparent irony. "Mademoiselle St Just, do you think you would be up to putting on a play? You should feature in it, of course," he added with a bit of a smirk.

The ladies were too bored. And God! Who could blame them? Perhaps this would give some diversion to redirect Josephine's misaimed ambition and staunch the gossip of Middleton. Or exacerbate it. Either way, he would be quite amused.
