Those are Shine Sprites. There are 120 to get. You get them for doing certain levels and secret levels.

oh, i recently borowed this from a friend, and i have 65 sprites (beats the 22 i had this weekend) I was told you only had to get 60 to go to the last battle, but you have to beat all the shadow mario stages....grrr...the sm stages arnt hard, getting to them is hard, exspecaly "the sand bird is born" and "red coins on the lake" those are the ones killing me right now..
