Description: With Phil Wilson of the June Brides
ian - July 3, 2006 12:52 PM (GMT)
Hello!
Thanks to everyone who came to Seven And Seven Is at the Buffalo Bar on Friday, for what turned out to be a messy and fun night! Photos are up on the site now:
http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.ukIt's back to business this usual this weekend, with HDIF in Brixton on Friday and HDIF in Oxford on Saturday. This will be the last HDIF in Oxford for a while, as we're taking a summer break - we'll be back sometime in the autumn. The guest DJ in Brixton is Phil Wilson from the June Brides. Phil's DJ-ed at HDIF twice before and turned in excellent sets both times, so we're really looking forward to this.
Indie track of the week is: "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John
Soul/sixties track of the week is: "She's Got Everything" by the Kinks
The remit breaker has been selected!
Full details for both nights are below.
Any requests?
Plus!
We're selling a limited amount of advance copies of the HDIF compilation at the club this weekend. The first 100 sold also come with a special "I'm a kid at the club" badge. We're also taking orders online right now. For more info, go to

What gave you the impression I like soul?
Erm, trying to think of some stuff apart from the excellent selections you'd probably play anyway ...
Stupidity - Solomon Burke
Don't Turn Your Heater On - Sam and Dave
Knock on Wood - Eddie Floyd
Here are the Pieces of my broken heart - Gladys Knight
You'll probably tell me you play them all the time now.
Erm, what else ... I swear I cna't function in the heat ...
25 Miles - Edwin Star
This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You) - Isley Brothers
I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose - Marv Johnson
Stoned Love - Supremes
I'll probably come and slur some more at you on Friday.
alexanderpashby - July 5, 2006 07:15 PM (GMT)
For The Canterbury Arms on Friday, how about Here Comes the Summer by the Fiery Furnaces?
ian - July 6, 2006 05:04 PM (GMT)
Gina - July 7, 2006 12:47 PM (GMT)
Did 'Holland, 1945' ever get played?
Gina x
ian - July 7, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
yes, played it at the last canterbury arms one.
Gina - July 7, 2006 03:34 PM (GMT)
Pah, I must have missed that.

ian - July 7, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
It was towards the end - sounded great!
Gina - July 7, 2006 04:03 PM (GMT)
I really can't remember that! I may well have even danced to it or something - my memory of what I danced to is usually a little hazy!

Dianne - July 7, 2006 04:20 PM (GMT)
Unfortunatly I'm going through a phase of linking music you would never play at HDIF, so I shall make no requests this week. But I shall dance all the same.
Dianne - July 8, 2006 09:17 AM (GMT)
Last night was genius, I am sorry I had to leave early. 'Its not so much a nightclub tonight, more of a census' cue loads of people pouing in, blatently fresh from the lostprophets gig. Ha!
ian - July 8, 2006 10:11 AM (GMT)
Yes, the census fell apart pretty quickly...! I managed everyone who was sitting at the tables around the room, and started on the people by the door and realised that it was never going to work. It actually got pretty full in the end...!
Thanks for coming along to this everyone! A great night, one of the best I think. A mad mixture of stuff, everyone up for dancing, the pile of shoes at the side of the dancefloor (!!!!), a bout of crossdressing from two people (who swapped skirt and trousers half way through the night), and lots and lots of fun. The Jens Lekman/Jonathan Richman/Kinks segment was just fantastic - "You've Got Everything" sounded spectacular. What a song!
:) :)
Dianne - July 8, 2006 10:14 AM (GMT)
You forgot "THE AUBERGINE" - genius.
ian - July 8, 2006 10:19 AM (GMT)
What aubergine? I missed that...!
Dianne - July 8, 2006 10:46 AM (GMT)
Miss purplepassion made an Aubergine [i think it was her what made it] out of a balloon. Last seen resting in someones pint I believe.
ian - July 8, 2006 10:55 AM (GMT)
Gina - July 8, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
'Twas a good night, although it was more of a sit down talky one for me, as I was a bit knackered, so I missed all this dancefloor madness and I couldn't hear what was being played some of the time. It was very strange how everyone suddenly piled in, though - I don't think I've ever seen it so quiet at 11pm, and then the place erupted. I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to sit by the dancefloor rather than by the door next time. Oh, and I haven't played the compilation yet, but it looks great.

Dianne - July 8, 2006 01:17 PM (GMT)
It was dementedly hot, which is half the reason I had to elave early, I can't be dealing with heat. I spent alot of time stood in the doorway wondering if I was allowed to take my pint outside and how much of a radge I'd look sitting on the curb drinking cider.
Gina - July 8, 2006 01:25 PM (GMT)
It was a bit, wasn't it? I stupidly went out wearing a cardigan, too. I still haven't said hello to you, I shall have to rectify this at some point.

Dianne - July 8, 2006 02:09 PM (GMT)

How on earth did I manage to miss that guy dressing up in that lass's skirt? Or James transforming into a member of the undead?

bachelorkisses - July 8, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Hi Ian,
I am really sorry we didn't make it yesterday. We'd love to come but we were both knackered after a hectic week :(
Mind, this was the second HDIF night (or the third including the 7''one) I 've missed since the new years eve. I am sure things are going to turn to normal from now on - so no more missing HDIFs...
I had a busy and rather good time in Lucerne this week. After all, Switzerland is lovely at this time of the year but blimey!!! swiss people have an apalling taste in music, to say the least. I was scared I woud turn into some salsa-rap dancing hybrid monster if I had to stay there for another week
We've got our tickets for Thursday, yeah!!!I am looking forward to it.
John NPL says hello and sends you a big, warm hug B)
I had my first NPL experience in Glasgow two weeks ago and it was super fantastic. I still have a big smile on my face, remainder of that night.
Btw the compilation is ACE!!
A Million hugs

Hey, that was a great night on Friday. Really enjoyed Phil's set, and the whole night went really well, it got nicely busy after a fairly quiet start, and I still can't remember much, despite not drinking all that much. Maybe I'm getting amnesia.
Dianne - July 10, 2006 09:08 AM (GMT)
Oh my god, my freckles are actually taking over my face.

Amateur, I hit 2 years on the bounce...The only person who's have more conseq than me is Ian!
TamlaTim - July 10, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
Yeah, twas a good un on Friday. Ian (I hope you won’t mind me saying) quite often likes to worry when it’s quiet early doors and says things like “well, we’ll just have a music between friends night then,” which is usually the cue for hundreds of people turning up desperate to get on the good foot. Just this once I was actually inclined to agree with him because of the lack of Victoria line, but there was an influx of people just after Team Tooting arrived (a coincidence? I think not) and it was nicely full in the end and had one of those great laid back, friendly HDIF atmospheres.
‘Lloyd, I’m ready to be heartbroken’ sounded particularly wonderful as did ‘Higher and Higher’ and ‘Sweet Soul Music’ and all the other songs I can’t remember.
I vaugely remember nearly getting a bit tearful at the end, in a happy drunk kind of way
ian - July 10, 2006 10:06 AM (GMT)
I wish I could remember what I played as well...!
"Painting And Kissing" by Hefner sounded fantastic, I do remember that. As did "Like A Daydream", the stand-in remit breaker. I did plan on playing something else, but discovered at 1am that I'd left it at home. Oh well...it'll have to roll over for next time.

It didn't occur to me that that was the remit-breaker, and it's only now I've remembered that you said you were going to play something off that comp. It sounded fantastic though.
I hated that Pipettes song (Pull shapes?) when I heard it on the radio the other night, but it sounded really good on Friday. I don't like anything else by them, mind.
Gina - July 10, 2006 10:14 AM (GMT)
Yeah I thought the same thing! The album is actually really good though, even though it's quite slickly produced.
Which one is it you think sounds like Sheila's Wheels?

All of them.
I've no idea what it's called, but Ian played it at the Phoenix the other week.
