Title: Twat Twoo! Has Owl City...
Description: Killed Indie As We Know It Forever?

With every style of indie having been raped and turned into a Brit friendly unit shifting piece of ball ache "mobile phone ad friendly" dullness over the past 5 years (i'm especially looking at the modern day Tasmin Archer playing Lennox nonscense of Florence & The Machine) I thought that things couldnt get worse... that was until last night when i heard "Fireflies" by Owl City.
And then i heard it was number 1.
And then i heard a load of texts from listeners proclaiming it's brilliance. I mean c'mon it sounds like a Postal Service parody, the lyrics are dreadful (that bit about getting hugs from bugs is the pits) and it has all the integrity of a blink 182 b-side.
I think i'm going to give up on pop music and get into something that makes me less angry. I'm sick of the disapointment.

I don't see what you're getting so upset about, Phil. I heard that Owl City track a couple of months ago. I didn't like it much, so I just moved on. That said, I don't much like the Postal Service, so I don't see it as any great sacrilege. They both sound bland and commercial to me.
There's still loads of great "indie" (for want of a better term) to be excited about. Just focus on what you like.
:)

It's just that i've tried to be patient and every year it just gets worse.
I know there's lots of great underground stuff but it just irritates me that there's no way in hell it'll get played anywhere other than a small number of people's lifes. Back in the day you had things like John Peel and the Chartshow that could help bring new and "unplanned" stuff to large audiences. There's none of that now... music channels all play the same handfull of videos relevant to their genre, there's no underground supporting magazines anymore. I find it all quite unfortuant that there's no way back. And yes i do remember when it was all fields.
It's the fact that increasingly it is decided who will break through each year and these acts just get blanket airplay until the public (who are equally to blame) yields.
I'm not that mad about it but it just disapoints me that all the fun is continually being taken out of the overall pop experience for me. Seeing bands break through and then try and then either raising their game or falling during indie season* was a big part of my life... i just miss artists having a legacy I guess.
Maybe I'm just old fart who cant handle the concept of Owl City and the concept of a January Monday Morning clashing heads. ;)
* indie season of course ran from the 1st of March until the sunday night riot at the Reading festival. It was when bands would release their albums and pimp them at festivals.

I used to love reading the music press every week. I miss that.
